The two of them felt a slight unsteadiness in their breaths, already stirred by emotions. Rao Jie slowly released Wu Rong and looked at him.
In their gazes, both pairs of eyes were filled with a hazy longing. The reflection of each other's faces danced in the depths of their dark eyes, emotions swirling within, yet they both found what they truly desired.
"Wu Rong, I love you," Rao Jie said, her voice slightly hoarse and tinged with a hint of tears, still affected by the earlier turmoil.
"You’re lying. I don’t believe you. You clearly wanted to leave," Wu Rong replied, his anger dissipated, leaving behind a sense of grievance as he questioned her with a mix of pride and vulnerability.
Rao Jie looked at Wu Rong earnestly and said, "I love you, very much. That’s why I let you go; I wanted you to see clearly what you truly want to do. I don’t want you to leave me, but I know I should let you go. You shouldn’t avoid certain things."
"I... I do have thoughts of avoiding the situation back in Cambridge, but that has nothing to do with our feelings. Why are you..."
"I lack confidence," she interrupted. "So I want to prove that even if you leave my side and return to your own world, you will still think of me and still like me."
"You... are you an idiot? Is there really a need to prove that?" Wu Rong said, somewhat angrily tapping Rao Jie on the forehead.
Rao Jie smiled softly, "Yeah, there’s no need for proof anymore."
Wu Rong retorted stubbornly, "If there’s no need for proof, then you can’t move away."
Rao Jie hesitated at once.
Seeing this, Wu Rong's anger flared up again as he pushed Rao Jie down and glared at her. "You still want to leave? I've come back; why do you want to go?"
Rao Jie sighed and explained, "Applying for the dorm was a last-minute decision. The class monitor told me it was the last day—on the day you left. I didn’t have time to discuss it with you before applying; it wasn’t intentional concealment. I wanted to tell you afterward, but I could already imagine how you'd feel when you found out—just like now. I was afraid it would interfere with your important matters, so I didn’t plan on mentioning it."
"If you had come back before school started, I would have explained everything properly. But if you hadn’t returned, I would have continued to hide it because I didn’t know what you were doing in the UK. I didn’t want to delay your important tasks over something like this."
Wu Rong wasn’t buying it; his logic was clear. "Don’t say so much. Just tell me why you want to move out. Moving out and asking me to go to England aren’t the same thing—aren’t they? You’re afraid that I’ll cling to you out of habit, so you want us to be apart for a long time like other couples do to prove it’s not just a habit, right?"
Rao Jie looked at Wu Rong in surprise; she had indeed thought that way initially.
Wu Rong narrowed his eyes and said, "Nina confessed everything to me over there. I know what she said that was out of line and what her intentions were."
Rao Jie felt a wave of embarrassment wash over her.
Wu Rong stated plainly, "I rejected her. She misunderstood everything; she misled you too. It’s not about habit at all—you all got the cause and effect completely wrong."
Rao Jie stared blankly at Wu Rong, confused by his words. What did he mean by 'wrong'?
"It's not that I like you because I'm used to you, but rather that I try to get used to you because I like you. Do you understand? It was my feelings for you that made me want to embrace everything about you. I wasn't clear about this before, but after leaving you this time, I understand it clearly now. There will never be anyone else who can make me adapt like this!"
