"Don't scare the child, okay? Can't you see Liu Ya is about to cry?"
I couldn't help but twitch my lips as I rolled my eyes at Yun Yi. Whenever he called me Xiao Liuzi, it was never for anything good. It was either to ask me to buy him books or to spout some nonsensical theories.
Sure enough, Yun Yi immediately put on a mischievous grin, trying to comfort the stunned Liu Ya, who looked like she was on the verge of tears.
"Oh, come on! Big brother is just teasing you. Both of us will help you find your sister, promise!"
I sighed and rubbed my forehead, watching as Yun Yi made a pinky promise with Liu Ya.
He really had no serious demeanor at all. No wonder we ended up doing odd jobs all the way to Lin'an City without even touching a single monster hair.
Suddenly, a series of bells rang out from the market. A woman wearing a cloth headscarf rushed in front of Liu Ya and Yun Yi, scooping Liu Ya up into her arms.
I instinctively tensed up, but the aunt seemed even more wary of us, her eyes darting between me and Yun Yi.
The atmosphere grew a bit awkward until Liu Ya called out, "Mom! They are scholars! They are good people!"
Only then did I lower my guard, and Yun Yi cleared his throat, trying to adopt a more dignified posture.
But unexpectedly, the aunt spat at Yun Yi with disdain, scolding him, "Scholars? They're just a bunch of hypocritical swindlers!"
Turning back to Liu Ya, she admonished, "Grand Immortal Chen said that after the evening bell tolls, no one is allowed to linger in the market! You little rascal, have you forgotten? Come back with me!"
Oh, how the tables had turned!
I watched as Yun Yi's face froze in shock—once praised by those high-ranking officials—now reduced to this state. I couldn't help but revel in his misfortune, nearly doubling over with laughter.
Just then, my stomach betrayed me with a loud growl, flushing my face bright red.
"Are you hungry? I told you not to laugh at your teacher! Now come with me!"
Yun Yi seemed a bit embarrassed too; he cleared his throat and pulled me along to find some food at an inn.
"Hey there, waiter! The food here looks pretty good!"
As I dug into my meal with gusto, Yun Yi stopped the waiter who was about to leave through the door. But the look in his eyes was anything but innocent; it seemed sly and cunning.
The obvious intent behind the drunken man is not the wine.
The waiter was clever and quite capable in his business, starting to boast about the specialties of his inn. Listening to him made me want to advise the innkeeper to give him a raise.
"Hey, what’s that evening bell you have here?" Yun Yi casually interjected, feigning curiosity about the cultural highlights of Lin'an City.
The waiter suddenly turned pale; just a moment ago, he had been enthusiastically describing the dishes, but now he stammered and seemed eager to retreat. However, Yun Yi, being the sly one he is, wouldn’t let him off that easily.
Clearly, he wouldn’t.
I timely handed over a silver coin, discreetly passing it to Yun Yi. He pretended to fiddle with it, dazzling the waiter's eyes as if they were made of silver.
What followed was a natural progression; the waiter secretly shared his exclusive news with us. It turned out that the evening bell was also created by the Immortal Chen mentioned by Aunt, meant to warn against the Evil Demon stealing children’s hearts.
My veins throbbed as I gritted my teeth and said, "Another demon? How do you know it was a demon?"
Seeing that I didn’t believe him at all, the waiter leaned closer and advised, "Oh, my two esteemed gentlemen, please don’t mention those two words again. The Taoist priests who came to our town before were all devoured by that Evil Demon! It was Grand Immortal Chen who set up the evening bell that restored peace to Lin'an City!"
I wanted to ask more questions, like any clues they had about this Evil Demon, but Yun Yi stopped me with a serious shake of his head.
Thinking he had discovered something significant, I was still in a daze when the waiter dashed out.
Once he left, I leaned closer to Yun Yi and asked, "Did you find something?"
Yun Yi simply yawned and said, "It’s getting late; I’m so sleepy." With that, he intended to return to his room for sleep.
I was so angry I felt like kicking him! Hmph! If you won’t go, I will! I’m determined to find out who is causing trouble behind the scenes!
