I turned to leave, but behind me, I heard Wang Yi's hurried footsteps.
“Meng Yan, wait!” He grabbed my wrist tightly. “I know I was wrong, I really know! Give me one more chance, please?”
I stopped and coldly looked at his hand. “Let go.”
“I won’t! Just hear me out!” His voice carried a hint of desperation. “I admit that what happened with Zhang Nana was my fault, but it was just a moment of confusion! I swear I’ll never do it again. I’ll change for the better, okay?”
I shook my head gently, a sarcastic smile tugging at my lips. “Change for the better? Wang Yi, do you know that every word you say right now makes me feel sick?”
“Meng Yan!” His voice trembled slightly. “I truly love you! We’ve been through so much together these past three years. Are you really going to give up?”
I forcefully pulled my wrist away from his grip. “Give up? Wang Yi, you were the one who gave up first! When you were in that hotel room with Zhang Nana, when you sent her those explicit messages, when you pretended to be deeply in love in front of me—you had already given up on this relationship!”
“I…” His face turned pale. “Those were all accidents…”
“Enough!” I interrupted him, taking off the necklace he had given me. “Here, take it back. This necklace is just like your love—cheap and hypocritical.”
He stared blankly as he took the necklace from me. “Meng Yan, do you really want to do this?”
“From today on, there will be no more interactions between us except for work.” I looked him straight in the eye. “In the Student Council, I will maintain basic politeness with you. But Wang Yi, remember this: we are done.”
“No!” He suddenly reached out to embrace me. “Meng Yan, I really can’t live without you!”
I quickly stepped back, avoiding his embrace. Under the moonlight, I saw the glimmer of tears in his eyes. In the past, such a scene might have softened my heart, but now, all I felt was irony.
"You can do it," I said calmly. "Just like when you were being ambiguous with Zhang Nana. Didn't you seem to be doing just fine?"
"Meng Yan!"
I turned and walked toward the exit of the playground. "I wish you and Zhang Nana happiness."
"You're back?" Li Wei's voice came from the upper bunk, laced with concern.
I replied with a soft hum, casually placing my bag on the table before collapsing onto the edge of my bed. The phone screen flickered on and off, displaying a stream of messages from Wang Yi: "Meng Yan, give me another chance," "I really know I was wrong," "Don't be like this"...
Li Wei climbed down from his bed and handed me a cup of warm water.
I took the cup, forcing a bitter smile as I nodded. "We broke up."
"What happened?" Li Wei sat down beside me, gently patting my back.
"He and Zhang Nana..." My voice choked up; I opened my mouth but couldn't produce any sound.
"That campus beauty, Zhang Nana?" Li Wei gasped. "He actually..."
"I should have seen it coming," I stared at my blurred reflection in the cup. "Recently, he always found various excuses to cancel our dates, saying he was busy with Student Council matters. But in reality..."
“Meng Yan,” Li Wei suddenly interrupted me, “to be honest, I’ve always thought you were too naive when it comes to relationships.”
I was taken aback.
“Someone like Wang Yi has been obvious from the start,” Li Wei sighed. “He’s warm and gentle with everyone, but that’s just a facade. You’re too easily deceived by his appearance.”
I tightened my grip on the cup. Yes, how could I not know Wang Yi’s nature? He could show a warm smile to anyone and speak sweet words to all. Yet I stubbornly believed he was different with me.
“You know,” I said with a bitter smile, “he just told me he loves me and wants to start anew. But Li Wei, when I looked into his eyes, I suddenly realized I could no longer see any sincerity.”
“That means you’ve finally woken up,” Li Wei held my hand. “Meng Yan, you deserve better. Instead of wasting time on a hypocrite, focus on improving yourself.”
Li Wei was right; I couldn’t continue like this. The failure of my relationship shouldn’t define me. I still had dreams to chase and more important things to do.
“Thank you, Li Wei.” I wiped my eyes and managed a relieved smile. “I’ve made up my mind. Starting tomorrow, I’ll devote all my energy to studying.”
“That’s the Meng Yan I know,” Li Wei said with a smile. “By the way, I heard there’s an innovation and entrepreneurship competition for college students…”
Suddenly, my phone vibrated; it was a call from Wang Yi. I glanced at it and decisively pressed the reject button.
