The next morning, the sunlight streaming through the dormitory window was so bright that I could barely open my eyes.
Li Wei was sitting on her bed, scrolling through her phone with a furrowed brow. "Meng Yan, have you seen this? The confession wall is about to explode."
I rubbed my temples and slowly sat up. "What now?"
She handed me her phone, and the screen was filled with posts about me.
"I heard Meng Yan got dumped by Wang Yi..." "Did she cheat and that's why they broke up?" "Someone saw her at the hospital. Is she sick?"
Rumors were flying everywhere.
I felt a slight heaviness in my chest. "These people really have too much time on their hands."
Li Wei angrily threw her phone down. "Why are they saying this about you? It's clearly Wang Yi's fault!"
I didn't respond; I just picked up my phone and opened my social media feed.
Wang Yi's post stood out prominently—he had shared a photo from the auditorium last night, with just two words in the caption: "Regret."
Those two short words had garnered countless likes and comforting comments.
"Don't be sad, Yi Ge. You deserve better!" "Oh, if she doesn't appreciate you, then forget her!"
Looking at these words, I couldn't help but find it amusing.
Regret?
He certainly knows how to play the victim, washing himself clean of any blame.
My fingers paused on the screen for a moment before I opened my Moments.
I selected a photo from my solo trip, with an endless ocean in the background and sunlight sparkling on the water's surface.
The caption was simple: "Some people, some things, end here. Thank you for the companionship in the past; for the future, may we each find peace."
After clicking send, I lay back on my bed and let out a long sigh of relief.
Li Wei gave me a thumbs up: "Well done! This is my Meng Yan!"
However, within five minutes, my Moments exploded with notifications.
Wang Yi was the first to jump in with a comment: "Meng Yan, I know there have been many misunderstandings between us, but please don’t deny our past like this. I remember you liked blue, so I specifically chose a blue gift box; I remember you loved strawberries, so every time I bought a cake, I picked strawberry flavor…"
He wrote a lengthy message that seemed heartfelt but made me feel utterly nauseated.
I stared at the screen with a cold smile for a moment before replying directly: "You remember so many details yet forgot the most important thing—loyalty. Since the past is over, please stop disturbing my life."
As soon as the reply was sent out, a new comment appeared below—posted by Zhang Nana, who only shared a cryptic emoji.
Li Wei nearly jumped up upon seeing it: "This woman is truly disgusting! How can she still show her face and stir up trouble?"
I remained noncommittal, merely smiling faintly: "Let her make a scene; it saves everyone from being unaware of the truth."
Sure enough, within ten minutes, my comment section had turned into a battlefield.
"Meng Yan is right! Loyalty is the most important thing!"
"Wang Yi is just a scumbag; why pretend to be so sentimental?"
"Zhang Nana, stop playing innocent; you can't escape your involvement in this matter!"
The voices supporting me grew louder, while Wang Yi and Zhang Nana became the targets of everyone's ire.
Looking at those comments, I felt a sense of relief—who knew that staying true to myself could garner so much understanding and support from others?
Li Wei patted my shoulder and smiled: "Don't worry; with us around, they won't be able to stir up any trouble."
I nodded but said nothing more, simply gazing out at the expanse of blue sky beyond the window.
