In the early morning, sunlight streamed through the curtains into the dormitory, and my phone screen lit up.
An email from a well-known internet giant caught my eye.
"Dear Meng Yan, congratulations on passing the final interview! We look forward to your joining us!"
My heart skipped a beat, and my fingertips trembled slightly.
I stared at those words for a long time, confirming that this was not a dream.
This was the result of countless late nights spent revising my resume and repeatedly simulating interviews.
"Li Wei!" I couldn't help but shout.
She poked her head out while brushing her teeth, foam still lingering at the corners of her mouth. "What’s up? Getting so excited this early in the morning?"
I handed my phone to her. Her eyes widened as she read it, and then she leaped over to hug me. "Oh my God! Meng Yan, you’re amazing!"
Her voice was filled with joy and pride, making my eyes misty.
"This is an offer from a top-tier company!" Li Wei patted my shoulder. "You’ve finally made it!"
I nodded with a smile but didn’t say anything; inside, I felt a warm surge of emotion.
Years of hard work had finally paid off, and all the pain and disappointment seemed to find redemption in that moment.
In the afternoon, just as I was about to print my onboarding materials, my phone suddenly rang—it was Wang Yi's number.
Looking at the name flashing on the screen, I hesitated for a moment, but ultimately decided to answer the call.
“Meng Yan, I heard… you got an offer from XX Company?” His voice was low, tinged with a hint of caution.
“Yeah.” I replied briefly, not wanting to say much more.
He fell silent for a moment, then tentatively spoke up, “Can we meet? There are some things I’d like to discuss with you in person.”
I hesitated for a moment but eventually agreed—not because I wanted to see him, but because I wanted to put an end to everything once and for all.
In the evening, as I pushed open the door of a café near the school, I immediately spotted Wang Yi sitting in a corner.
He was wearing a white shirt, looking much more haggard than before. Two cups of coffee sat on the table, one clearly prepared for me.
“Meng Yan.” He stood up, looking somewhat awkward as he gazed at me. “Thank you for agreeing to meet.”
I pulled out a chair and sat down without touching the cup of coffee, simply looking at him calmly. “If you have something to say, just say it.”
He took a deep breath, his gaze toward me filled with complexity. “Congratulations on getting the offer; it proves that you’ve always been excellent…”
His voice gradually trailed off before he lifted his head and spoke in an almost pleading tone. “Can we start over?”
My brows furrowed slightly but quickly returned to calm. “Start over?”
“Yes.” He nodded. “It was my fault before; I shouldn’t have ignored your feelings or done those hurtful things. But now, I truly realize my mistakes. I’m willing to change; all I need is a chance from you. We can work hard together and strive for the future…”
His tone was sincere and urgent, but to my ears, it sounded like a farcical performance.
The person who once made my heart race is now just a memory of futile struggles and hypocritical regrets.
"Wang Yi," I interrupted him, my tone as calm as if discussing the weather. "What we had is over; there's no going back."
His face instantly turned pale. "Why? Does that mean we had no feelings for each other at all?"
"Feelings?" I let out a light laugh, locking my gaze onto his eyes. "If there were any, they were long consumed by your betrayal."
The air seemed to freeze. He opened his mouth to say something but found himself at a loss for words.
"Actually, I agreed to meet you today to tell you—thank you for helping me understand what truly matters." I stood up and pushed my coffee cup back onto the table. "But from now on, you will no longer be a part of my life."
He was speechless, staring blankly at my retreating figure as I left the café.
The moment I stepped outside, I felt a weight lift from my chest.
The street was bustling with people, each heading in their own direction, and mine would no longer include Wang Yi.
In the distance, a car horn honked, and I looked down at the employment materials in my hand, a smile of relief spreading across my face.
A new life was about to begin.
