Chapter Three
I had not slept a wink all night, my mind filled with the images of Willow Spirit and Liu Banjian. They flickered in my thoughts like a revolving lantern, leaving me restless and anxious.
The next morning, just as dawn broke, I got out of bed, quickly washed up, and hurried to the old locust tree at the village entrance. As I approached, I spotted Willow Spirit already setting up his stall. He still wore that ethereal demeanor, holding a whisk in his hand, gently swaying it as if he were about to ascend to immortality at any moment.
“ Brother, you’ve arrived,” Willow Spirit called out with keen eyes, greeting me with a warm smile that brought comfort to my heart.
“What’s the news? Is there any word from Liu Banjian?” I asked impatiently, my voice trembling with urgency. After all, my hopes for avenging my son rested entirely on Willow Spirit.
“Don’t worry, Brother. I’ve sent someone to gather information; I believe we’ll have news soon,” Willow Spirit reassured me calmly, his tone filled with confidence as if everything was under control.
I nodded and silently prayed in my heart for everything to go smoothly and that nothing would go awry.
Time ticked by slowly, each second of waiting felt like a century, and my anxiety grew. I was like an ant on a hot pan, unable to sit still as I paced back and forth.
Finally, when the sun was high in the sky, a young man rushed over. He was drenched in sweat and panting heavily, clearly having run all the way here.
“Sir, there’s news!” the young man gasped between breaths, sweat streaming down his face.
“Speak quickly!” Willow Spirit urged him with a hint of urgency in his voice; after all, this was crucial for avenging Brother.
“Liu Banjian is hosting guests at the Drunken Immortal Pavilion in the city this noon,” the young man finally managed to catch his breath and said in one breath.
“Good!” Willow Spirit slammed his hand on the table excitedly. “It seems heaven is aiding us! Liu Banjian’s time has come!”
“ Brother, let’s head to the city now and settle accounts with Liu Banjian!” Willow Spirit turned to me, his voice filled with murderous intent as a cold light flickered in his eyes.
I nodded, my heart filled with anticipation and excitement; I had waited too long for this day!
We traveled in a carriage, racing towards the city. The sound of hooves echoed against the cobblestone road, ringing out sharply as if urging us to hurry, to go faster.
Upon arriving at the Drunken Immortal Pavilion, we found a corner table to sit at, quietly waiting for Liu Banjian's arrival. This spot was unobtrusive yet allowed us to observe everything happening in the hall.
Before long, Liu Banjian swaggered in, surrounded by a throng of people. He still wore that arrogant expression, nostrils flared as if the entire world revolved around him and everyone had to obey his commands.
Seeing Liu Banjian ignited a surge of fury within me, erupting like a volcano; I could hardly restrain the urge to rush over and tear him apart to avenge my poor son.
" Brother, don't act impulsively," Willow Spirit seemed to sense my thoughts. He gently pressed down on me and whispered, "A gentleman takes his revenge; ten years is not too late. Let’s observe the situation first and see what Liu Banjian is up to."
I took a deep breath, striving to suppress my rage, and nodded. Yes, now was not the time; I had to endure and wait for the perfect moment.
Liu Banjian sat down at a large table, starting to clink cups with his guests, laughter and chatter filling the air in a lively atmosphere.
Willow Spirit watched Liu Banjian with a slight smirk on his lips, as if he were looking at a corpse.
" Brother, just watch the show," Willow Spirit said softly, his tone brimming with confidence as if everything was under control.
I nodded again, fixated on Liu Banjian, afraid of missing any detail; I wanted to witness his comeuppance with my own eyes!
Suddenly, Liu Banjian's expression changed dramatically; his face turned pale and flushed alternately as he clutched his chest and groaned in agony. Sweat beads formed on his forehead.
"Ouch! My chest hurts so much! It’s killing me!" Liu Banjian cried out in pain, his voice filled with terror, completely devoid of his earlier arrogance.
His guests were taken aback by this sudden turn of events and rushed over, bombarding him with questions.
“Liu Banjian, what’s wrong? Are you feeling unwell?”
“Did you eat something bad? Or did you drink too much?”
“Should we call a doctor? Hurry, go get a doctor!”
Liu Banjian's complexion grew increasingly worse, turning pale as beads of sweat formed on his forehead. One by one, the sweat droplets rolled down, soaking his clothes.
“I... I’m suffering... from retribution!” Liu Banjian stammered, his voice filled with fear and despair, as if he had seen something terrifying.
“Retribution? What retribution?” His guests were confused, exchanging glances, not understanding what he meant. They thought he was just rambling due to intoxication.
“I... I killed Lao Liu’s son... I am guilty...” Liu Banjian used the last of his strength to speak, his voice growing weaker.
As soon as he finished speaking, he collapsed to the ground, convulsed a few times, and then lay still, unconscious.
Seeing this, his guests were terrified and fled in panic, screaming as they rushed away, fearing they might catch some bad luck.
The Drunken Immortal Pavilion was thrown into chaos, filled with screams, cries, and the sounds of tables and chairs clattering together—a scene of utter disorder.
I looked at Liu Banjian’s lifeless body, filled with a sense of satisfaction; truly, evil begets evil—justice prevails!
“Dazhuang, Father has finally avenged you!” I silently said to myself, tears streaming down my face—tears of joy and sorrow alike.
Willow Spirit walked over to me and patted my shoulder, offering comfort. “Brother, take heart. Dazhuang in the afterlife will surely feel comforted seeing you avenge him.”
I nodded and looked gratefully at Willow Spirit, overwhelmed with emotions and unsure where to begin expressing my thoughts.
"Brother, what are your plans now?" Willow Spirit asked, breaking the silence.
I shook my head and replied, "I don't know. Right now, I just want to live well, to live well for Dazhuang, and to see the beauty of this world."
Willow Spirit nodded and said, "Brother, don't worry. I will always be by your side."
I nodded gratefully, feeling warmth fill my heart as a wave of comfort washed over me. I knew that I had gained another family member in my life, someone I could rely on.
We left the Drunken Immortal Pavilion together and returned to the village, a place filled with countless memories for me.
Standing before Dazhuang's grave, sorrow and reluctance filled my heart, and tears blurred my vision once again.
"Dazhuang, rest in peace. Father will live well for you, to see the beauty of this world," I silently said in my heart, my voice choked with emotion.
Willow Spirit stood beside me, quietly accompanying me without saying a word, just offering silent support.
"Brother, let's go back," Willow Spirit gently said, breaking the silence once more.
I nodded and followed Willow Spirit as we left the hillside and walked towards home.
As we walked along the path home, the setting sun cast long shadows of us on the ground, its warm rays enveloping us in a comforting glow.
