"Call your General out to receive the command!"
"What are you staring at? Hurry up and call your General out to receive the command!"
Li Yiyi stopped in front of the camp at Wuning Pass, raising her voice to shout, exuding an impressive aura.
The two soldiers guarding the camp were momentarily taken aback, but quickly regained their composure and shouted back, "Get lost! What are you doing begging at a military camp? If you don't leave, we'll take you to military court!"
"You’re the one begging!" Li Yiyi retorted defiantly, her eyes wide with indignation.
She then tugged at her tattered clothing, inwardly lamenting her situation.
Damn it, after trekking through mountains and rivers, enduring wind and rain, she was worried about arriving late. By the time she reached Wuning Pass, the Tang Army would have been completely annihilated by the Turkic forces. She had no time to tidy herself up.
With a disdainful smile, she leisurely pulled out a token from her bosom, pointed it at them, and arrogantly declared, "Open your eyes and take a good look!"
In the sunlight, the small token gleamed brilliantly, dazzlingly bright. Although the inscriptions were not visible, its intricate design and exquisite craftsmanship clearly indicated it was an imperial item.
The two soldiers hesitated for a moment, exchanging glances before one of them dashed inside to report.
Li Yiyi revealed a triumphant smile as she casually toyed with the token, pleasantly surprised that it actually worked.
Hmph, they would regret this sooner or later.
When Yan Ziyi saw Li Yiyi, she couldn't help but think that her soldiers were truly blind; calling her a beggar was an insult to such a long-standing profession.
Her hair was a tangled mess resembling a bird's nest, filled with dried grass and leaves. Her face was smeared with mud, so mottled that her original complexion was nearly unrecognizable. Her clothes were ragged and barely covered her body.
Yan Ziyi scrutinized her for a while. Although Li Yiyi looked disheveled, her large sparkling eyes were incredibly mischievous and lively. The black orbs twirled around curiously—sometimes looking at Yan Ziyi and sometimes gazing at the sky—leaving one to wonder what thoughts were swirling in her mind.
A playful smile crept onto Yan Ziyi's lips as she asked, "Did you come from the palace?"
Li Yiyi smiled mysteriously and glanced around furtively.
Yan Ziyi immediately understood and elegantly raised her arm, making a gesture of invitation. "Please."
"Wow, is this the General's tent? Look at this sand table, look at this map, look at this precious sword, look at this armor!" Li Yiyi exclaimed excitedly, her eyes sparkling with curiosity as she cautiously reached out to touch the golden silk armor.
It wasn't until Yan Ziyi gently cleared her throat that Li Yiyi snapped back to reality. She quickly composed herself, adopting a serious expression, and said with a clear voice, "Yan Ziyi receives the decree."
Upon hearing this, Yan Ziyi immediately knelt down in military salute.
Li Yiyi stifled a laugh in her heart, then cleared her throat and solemnly announced, "By the grace of Heaven and the Emperor's command, it is hereby declared that the Great Army is currently besieged at the front lines. Princess Danyang is appointed as the Supervising General to accompany the army and ensure all matters are handled with utmost care. Thus decreed."
The previously expressionless Yan Ziyi couldn't help but mutter to herself upon hearing "Princess Danyang" and "Supervising General."
"Aren't you going to accept the decree?" Li Yiyi urged impatiently.
Yan Ziyi couldn't help but chuckle softly. "May I ask where the imperial edict is?"
Oh no, it was all her fault for being too careless; she had been so focused on finding a legitimate way to stay in the military camp that she forgot about the most crucial item—the decree!
Li Yiyi pouted in frustration and quickly retorted, "A verbal command will do, right?"
Yan Ziyi calmly reminded her, "My dear lady, falsely conveying an imperial edict is a capital offense."
Li Yiyi could no longer maintain her facade and waved her hand dismissively. "Alright then, my father is concerned about the situation at the front lines. As his child, of course I want to help him relieve his worries."
She suddenly lowered her voice, adding a hint of threat. "And by the way, I snuck out. You mustn't report my presence here to the court; otherwise... hmph..."
"You say you are Princess Danyang?"
Li Yiyi spun around in place and retorted, "Doesn't it look like it?"
Her bright eyes sparkled with mischief as she deliberately adopted a boastful tone. "Hehe, how about that? You’ve never seen a princess before, have you? Today’s your chance—look closely! You might not get another opportunity like this in your lifetime."
Yan Ziyi remained silent. The emperor certainly had many princesses, but they were all kept deep within the palace, and he had never had the chance to meet any of them.
He had carefully examined the token earlier and found no flaws. However, how could a Tang Princess possibly come to the front lines?
In an instant, Yan Ziyi had an idea; regardless of whether she was friend or foe, it was better to play along.
Just then, Li Yiyi's stomach let out a loud growl. He smiled gently and said, "Are you hungry, Princess? I'll have someone prepare some food for you."
"Great! That sounds wonderful!" Li Yiyi, unaware of Yan Ziyi's intentions, was overjoyed at the prospect of food after having endured a long journey with little to eat. She nearly jumped up in excitement.
With a bright smile, she said, "You don't have to call me 'Princess.' I’m not that high and mighty; just call me Yiyi."
Watching her devour the food with such fervor left Yan Ziyi puzzled. Although he had never seen a real princess before, he thought that most young ladies wouldn't eat in such a crude manner.
A nearby attendant couldn't bear to watch any longer and whispered to Yan Ziyi, "General, she doesn't seem like someone from the palace; she looks more like someone from a prison."
Yan Ziyi's expression darkened as he scolded, "Mind your tongue."
In no time at all, Li Yiyi finished an entire bowl of rice. Wiping her mouth with her hand, she looked eagerly at Yan Ziyi and asked, "Is there more?"
The corner of Yan Ziyi's mouth twitched slightly before he finally managed to say two words: "Help yourself."
