Father Li and Mother Xue stood frozen in place. The police officer sighed, "From the current situation, Wei Hao should be safe, but his three classmates are missing, which complicates matters."
Father Li murmured, "No wonder Wei Hao hasn't come home; what on earth is he up to? It's really hard on our Li Jun."
Mother Xue began to cry, "Is my Yungui in danger?"
The police officer shook his head. "It's hard to say. The longer this drags on, the worse it is for them."
A couple of days ago, I noticed something was off with Ma Zhaoqiang, and I was worried. He is an introverted child who usually prefers to lock himself in his room and doesn't like talking to his parents. Ever since my divorce from his mother, he has become even more withdrawn. Yet, I always felt that something was not quite right.
That day, I saw him constantly opening and closing the refrigerator, taking a lot of drinks back to his room. Recently, he also developed a liking for snacks and bought quite a few treats to keep in his room. I asked him with concern, "Son, are you planning to skip dinner and just eat snacks?"
Ma Zhaoqiang glanced at me and handed me a pack of Shaqima, leaving me both amused and exasperated. But I couldn't shake the feeling that there seemed to be a third person in this house.
Every day, Ma Zhaoqiang and I would leave together in the morning, but when we returned home at night, I noticed that the position of the throw pillows had changed and there were subtle watermarks left on the floor. I had no idea who had left those traces behind. Our lives were quite routine; every morning we would head out together.
When I returned home in the evening, I would clean the house. I have obsessive-compulsive tendencies; for instance, the two throw pillows must be placed behind the sofa. However, I noticed that every afternoon when I came home, the pillows were always in the middle of the sofa, which puzzled me. I also mopped the floor daily, yet there would always be one or two faint watermarks left behind. Was someone else in my house?
But besides me and Ma Zhaoqiang, who else could it be?
"Before your son went missing, did you notice anything unusual in your home?" captain Chen asked me.
I nodded, "I suspect there is a third person in my house."
As soon as I said this, everyone was taken aback.
"Every day, Ma Zhaoqiang and I leave together, but when we return at night, I find changes with the throw pillows and faint watermarks on the floor. Since neither of us is home during the day, who could be leaving these traces?"
"It must be Wei Hao!" Fat Parent exclaimed excitedly. "It's definitely him! He loves drinking beverages and snacking; he must have been hanging out with my son!"
"Let's go check Ma Zhaoqiang's house," captain Chen said, prompting everyone present to rise and prepare to leave the police station.
" captain Chen, where exactly has my son gone?" Li Jun's father asked, his voice hoarse. Looking at his red-rimmed eyes, it was clear he had been crying recently.
“I’m not sure either,” Captain Chen turned his head to look at Mother Xue. “Did Xue Yungui say anything to you before he ran away?”
Mother Xue clutched her head in pain. “He kept pestering me for money, saying he wanted to play some game. But that game costs too much, so in a fit of anger, I cut off his allowance. Then we had a fight, and he ran away from home.”
“Think carefully. Did he exhibit any unusual behavior when he left?”
Mother Xue pondered painfully and finally shook her head. “I was really angry at the time, so I didn’t pay attention.”
“Captain Chen, I know that game. My son plays it too,” Li Jun’s father whispered, lowering his voice. “A few days ago, he asked me for some money, but it wasn’t a large amount, so I gave it to him.”
