Father Li furrowed his brows tightly.
captain Chen did not respond, but the excitement of Mother Xue and the silence of captain Chen already spoke volumes. captain Chen ignored the fat man and turned to us parents, pulling out a photograph.
"This is a screenshot from the video sent by the kidnappers. I printed it out for you," he said. "Take a close look. Is there anything unusual about this mask?"
Upon hearing this, I leaned in closer to examine it carefully. The mask was white, resembling the one worn by the kidnapper in the previous video, but there seemed to be something different about it.
"This mask seems to be missing a corner compared to the one before?" I frowned, feeling uncertain.
"Exactly!" captain Chen nodded, speaking seriously. "During our investigation, we discovered that there was a conflict between the first and second groups of kidnappers, which caused changes in the situation regarding Victim."
"This means that the children's safety is also at risk!" My heart tightened at those words.
"What should we do now?" Father Li asked, his face filled with worry.
"We had already confirmed that Wei Hao and his uncle were involved in this kidnapping, but due to the Wei Family's withdrawal, this case nearly got dismissed," captain Chen sighed.
"The kidnapping of your children serves no purpose, but if the kidnappers are still around..." He suddenly stopped mid-sentence, scanning our group of parents with a piercing gaze.
Though he did not utter any further threats, I could distinctly feel the temperature around us drop.
"I need to interrogate Wei Hao's uncle again and take a look at your home," he concluded.
captain Chen withdrew his gaze and spoke slowly.
"You all just wait here at the station."
After saying that, he deliberately glanced at me.
Although there was no threatening expression, my heart sank a little.
In the waiting room of the police station, the three of us were restless.
Father Li went out to the stairwell for a smoke, then returned only to leave again for another cigarette. Mother Xue was quietly crying, and I had nothing to say, so I didn’t comfort her.
After a long time, Father Li finally couldn’t hold back any longer. He slapped his thigh and asked the female officer wearing glasses beside him, "Officer, do we just have to wait here?"
"This..."
I chimed in, "Yeah, we want to go out and look for our child too!"
The female officer pressed her lips together. " captain Chen has already gone out to search. Don't worry; you will be notified as soon as there is any news."
"If you remember any details, make sure to tell me right away."
Upon hearing this, Father Li calmed down a bit. I poured him a cup of water and casually asked, "Where's your child's mother?"
"We divorced years ago," he sighed.
"My husband died young; this is my only son. If anything happens to him, I wouldn't want to live!"
Mother Xue sobbed as she spoke.
"This child never acted like this before; he would just slam a door at most! This time he actually dared to steal my money to play games!"
"I don't know if he was tricked in the game or if someone led him astray!"
Listening to Mother Xue's words made me feel uneasy.
"Could it be that they are specifically targeting single-parent families?" I proposed an outrageous idea.
“Hmm—” Father Li ’s eyes lit up. “There really is a possibility!”
We immediately reported this idea to captain Chen.
After several minutes of silence, an awkward laugh came from the phone. “Wei Hao’s parents haven’t divorced…”
“I’ve made a breakthrough on my end. I’ll be back soon!”
