The threshold for this industry is quite low; as long as one is willing to work hard, that’s enough. I planned to move to another city with my wife and child once Ma Zhaoqiang got into college. However, things developed in a way I never expected.
At school, Ma Zhaoqiang was bullied even more severely by Wei Hao. This time, Wei Hao not only bullied Ma Zhaoqiang himself but also called in two other boys—Li Jun and Xue Yungui. The light in Ma Zhaoqiang's eyes faded completely, and his grades began to plummet.
My wife and I held our heads in despair, feeling utterly helpless. Eventually, my wife divorced me. Deep down, I knew she had been contemplating this for a long time.
Wei Hao grew increasingly arrogant; he even dared to slap Ma Zhaoqiang in front of me. Captain Chen returned just as dusk was settling in. He looked grim and informed me that Xue Yungui had been killed. His body was stuffed into a delivery box along with five hundred thousand yuan in cash, discarded in a trash bin.
I feigned anxiety and asked, “Was it because the money wasn’t delivered? What about my Zhaoqiang? Is he alright?” Captain Chen stared at me intently, his eyes filled with suspicion.
“Ma Qiang, I’m genuinely curious why this case has nothing to do with you,” he said. “You seem perfectly normal, but it’s that very normalcy that makes me uneasy.”
I spread my hands innocently and replied, “Captain Chen, what are you talking about? I don’t quite understand.”
Captain Chen pointed at the ring on my finger. “You’re divorced, right? Your son and you are both children from single-parent families.”
"You just mentioned that the case targets single-parent families, which makes me suspicious," Captain Chen said with a light chuckle.
"As far as I know, you have a good relationship with your Ex-Wife. I’m not quite sure why you divorced," he continued. "However, I find it puzzling that you’re still wearing your wedding ring."
I looked down at the ring on my hand and replied calmly, "I bought this when I got married. I wanted to hold onto that feeling, so I've never taken it off."
Captain Chen stared into my eyes, trying to find any signs of deceit. But my demeanor only disappointed him.
"Ma Qiang, are you hiding something from me?" Captain Chen asked, weariness etched on his face, his eyes revealing his apprehension about the case. Beneath it all lingered a sorrow for the loss of young lives.
"Ma Qiang, when did you find out that Xue Yungui was dead?"
I feigned surprise. "Captain Chen, what are you saying? Yungui is dead? How could that be?"
Captain Chen waved his hand, signaling his subordinate to bring something forward.
"Ma Qiang, you know what I mean," he pressed. "Didn’t you say this case is targeting single-parent families? Then tell me, why are you still wearing your wedding ring after your divorce?"
I fell silent, looking down.
Captain Chen signaled to his subordinate Xiao Zhang, who pulled out a document.
"Ma Qiang, this is the property deed for your community," he stated. "You have two storage rooms, and they’re adjacent to each other. However, one of the storage rooms has a different building area and usable area."
"What are you using that extra space for?"
"Also, people in the neighborhood have been complaining that they hear chopping sounds coming from your place late at night."
captain Chen let out a cold laugh.
"Ma Qiang, can you explain this to me?"
I sighed, knowing that captain Chen was trying to trick me.
He had no real evidence, just these scattered clues.
As long as I didn't show any signs of weakness, he wouldn't be able to do anything to me.
The interrogation room fell silent once more until a young officer came in and handed captain Chen a photograph.
I glanced at it and felt quite satisfied.
