The End of the Floor 2: Strange Neighbor

The next morning, I went to the nearby market with Lu Fan to buy groceries. As we passed the entrance of our building, I noticed a middle-aged man with a sullen expression standing at the door, holding a bulging plastic bag. I approached him and politely greeted, "Hello, we just moved in yesterday. Please take care of us." 0

The man looked up at me, his eyes clouded with an indescribable gloom. His gaze flickered momentarily, a mix of wariness and discontent evident in his expression. He frowned slightly, his lips twitching as he let out a soft grunt before turning on his heel and quickly walking into the hallway, his shoulders slightly hunched as if suppressing some emotion. I stood there for a moment, feeling a bit awkward, while Lu Fan chuckled and patted my shoulder, saying, "Don't mind him; he’s probably just an introverted person." 0

I nodded, but my unease lingered. That night, I heard the sound again from the end of the hallway. This time it seemed clearer, as if someone was gently tapping on the floor or dragging something heavy. I hesitated for a while but ultimately decided against investigating. Instead, I lay in bed, staring at the ceiling until exhaustion finally pulled me into slumber. 0

A few days later, I encountered another neighbor—a frail old woman with silver hair dressed in simple clothes who always hurried past with her head down. That day, I happened to meet her at the staircase. The old woman looked up at me briefly; hesitation flickered in her eyes before she nodded in acknowledgment. 0

"Hello, how long have you lived in this building?" I smiled and tried to strike up a conversation. 0

The old woman didn’t respond directly; instead, she murmured softly, "You young people shouldn’t meddle too much; at the end of the hallway..." Her voice trembled slightly as if she was unsure whether to continue. Eventually, she lowered her voice further and said, "You mustn't go there." A hint of unease shone in her eyes, as if she harbored some deep-seated fear. 0

I was taken aback, a chill creeping up my spine. I wanted to ask her what she meant but she turned and hurried upstairs as if unwilling to say another word. I stood there watching her frail figure retreating down the corridor, my doubts intensifying. 0

Back home, Lu Fan was sitting at his desk browsing through some materials. When he saw me return, he smiled and said, "I looked into the history of this building; nothing particularly special. However, there was a missing person case a few years ago that ended unresolved—a real mystery." 0

"Missing person case?" My heart raced as I recalled the old woman's warning and the strange sounds I'd heard during those nights. A wave of indescribable anxiety washed over me. 0

Lu Fan shrugged it off. "Don't worry; that's all in the past now. We moved here for a fresh start; there's no need to let past shadows affect us." 0

I remained silent, gazing out at the darkening sky outside. The strange unease within me felt like the darkness at the end of the hallway—growing deeper and more persistent, refusing to dissipate. The building seemed to harbor countless secrets that were slowly closing in on me. I couldn’t help but wonder if Lu Fan and I had truly made the right decision by moving into this gloomy structure. 0

As night fell once more, the sounds from the end of the hallway echoed again—an incessant reminder that some things in this building did not wish to be disturbed. 0

It has been over a week since I moved into my new home, yet I still cannot shake off the eerie feeling that lingers in this building. I strive to adapt to my new surroundings, keeping myself busy with work and taking care of the house, but the endless darkness at the end of the hallway and the constant whispers that echo through the air continue to loom over me like a shadow. 0
