mother Li had also started to grow distant with me, even regarding me with wariness and fear whenever we crossed paths in the hallway. She hurriedly pulled Xiao Ming close, as if I had become some kind of potential threat. "Shen Jing, you’d better not come into contact with us anymore," mother Li said nervously, her grip on Xiao Ming's wrist tightening, her tone laced with an urgency that brooked no refusal.
As the hostility from the residents intensified, both Lu Fan and I felt the pressure mounting. Lu Fan began to grow irritable, often losing patience over trivial matters. I too felt a heaviness in my chest, the warnings and threats echoing relentlessly in my mind, leaving me restless at night. We knew that continuing our investigation could provoke even more severe confrontations. Meanwhile, the sounds at the end of the hallway seemed to grow more frequent and clearer. Those low whispers echoed in the stillness of the night, sometimes surfacing even when I closed my eyes, like a malicious call beckoning me.
One night, I dreamt that I was standing at the end of the hallway before an old iron door. Behind it lay a pitch-black abyss, and I could sense some presence watching me from within the darkness; those whispers seemed to be calling my name. When I awoke, I was drenched in sweat, my heart racing violently. This dream haunted me for several nights in a row, severely affecting my mental state, to the point where I occasionally experienced hallucinations during the day.
Lu Fan noticed my fatigue and anxiety and decided we needed to accelerate our investigation to uncover the hidden secrets of this building and put an end to this terrifying ordeal. He suggested exploring the basement at the end of the hallway since it seemed to be a place everyone was reluctant to mention and one of the sources of their fear.
We chose a night when the residents were less active to carry out our plan quietly. Armed with flashlights, Lu Fan and I held our breath as we slowly approached the end of the hallway. The closer we got, the more palpable the chill in the air became, as if the temperature dropped several degrees compared to other areas. The beam of our flashlight appeared weak in the darkness, nearly swallowed by surrounding shadows. The old iron door was covered in rust, looking particularly eerie, like a silent monster waiting for our arrival.
Just as Lu Fan placed his hand on the doorknob, a sudden flurry of footsteps echoed through the hallway. We immediately turned around to see several residents rushing down from the staircase, their expressions tense and furious. Mr. Chen led the group; he shoved Lu Fan's hand away and shouted angrily, "What do you think you're doing? Don’t open that door! Do you want to put us all in danger?"
Other residents quickly surrounded us, their faces filled with terror and hostility as if we were committing an unforgivable act. Some trembled uncontrollably while muttering, "It can't be like this... it can't be like this." Others shouted urgently with desperation in their voices: "Stop! You’ll get us killed!" mother Li was among them; her face pale and voice trembling as she cried out, "Don’t go in! You’ll awaken it! We’ll never escape!"
Faced with such intense reactions from the residents, Lu Fan and I had no choice but to back down for now. Clearly, whatever lay behind that door held a deep psychological shadow over them—something they were profoundly afraid to confront. We could only step aside and watch as these residents formed a tight barrier around the iron door as if they intended to use their bodies to prevent anyone from getting closer.
