Suddenly, Lu Fan's flashlight beam landed in the corner, where several yellowed old newspapers lay scattered. He picked one up and handed it to me. I examined it closely under the beam of the flashlight, and the title was barely legible: "Mysterious Disappearance Case Unresolved, Cult Activities Suspected." 0

The contents of the newspaper sent chills down my spine. It detailed several missing person cases that had occurred in this building years ago. The police had conducted investigations, but there were no results, and rumors of cult activities had never ceased. The article also mentioned a cult leader whose whereabouts remained unknown to this day. A wave of cold washed over me, as if something unseen was watching us from the darkness. 0

"These missing person cases... seem to have never been thoroughly investigated," I whispered, my voice echoing oddly in the silent basement. Lu Fan frowned and nodded, "I feel like this matter is far from over; we need to find more evidence." 0

We continued deeper into the basement, the flashlight illuminating broken candlesticks, scattered talisman papers, and some unidentified totem carvings. The air felt increasingly heavy. I could feel the sweat on my back gradually soaking my clothes, and my unease was expanding little by little. The patterns on the talismans were twisted and complex, as if they were about to come alive from the paper; I couldn't help but look away. 0

Lu Fan suddenly stopped in his tracks, frowning as he looked toward a corner. There was a pile of discarded old items—tattered fabrics mixed with rusty metal—but one object caught our attention—a strange statue about half a meter tall, resembling a mix between a human and a beast, with a grotesque face and holding what looked like a scepter. Its carving style was bizarre and distorted. 0

"What is this..." Lu Fan murmured, reaching out to touch it. My heart raced, and I quickly stopped him, "Don't touch it; I have a bad feeling about this thing." 0

Lu Fan hesitated for a moment but withdrew his hand. He nodded and continued searching the room with the flashlight. I could sense that every inch of this basement exuded an ominous aura, as if every corner hid secrets waiting to pounce at our slightest misstep. 0

Just then, we heard a chaotic sound of footsteps coming from upstairs. Lu Fan and I exchanged tense glances; our faces reflected our anxiety. We held our breath, and the beam of the flashlight stilled as the entire basement seemed to fall into a suffocating silence. Before we could react, the basement door was suddenly flung open with force, and several residents rushed in, led by Mr. Chen. 0

"What are you doing?!" Mr. Chen's shout echoed harshly in the cramped basement space; his eyes were bloodshot, his face a mix of anger and fear. "Do you want to bring disaster back?! Do you even know what you're doing?!" 0

Before I could respond, Mr. Chen charged forward, shoving Lu Fan aside and even raising his fist to strike his shoulder. Lu Fan stumbled but did not retaliate; he struggled to steady himself while trying to calmly persuade Mr. Chen to calm down. 0

"Mr. Chen, please calm down! We just want to understand what happened here!" I shouted urgently, my heart racing like a drumbeat. But Mr. Chen paid no heed to my plea; his emotions were completely out of control, his fear resembling a volcano ready to erupt at any moment. 0
