The End of the Floor 13: Collective Stress

The residents had clearly lost control completely. They began to shove Lu Fan, and some even tried to hit him with wooden sticks. I rushed over, attempting to pull them apart, but it was futile. Mr. Chen's strength was beyond imagination, his eyes filled with despair and madness, as if we had committed some unforgivable act. 0

At that moment, mother Li suddenly rushed forward, standing in front of us, tears streaming down her face as she shouted at Mr. Chen, "Stop! If this continues, we will all be doomed!" Her voice was hoarse and desperate, as if she had exhausted all her strength. She looked at Lu Fan, her eyes pleading, "Please, leave this place. Don’t continue this..." 0

mother Li's appearance seemed to calm the residents' emotions slightly. Seizing the opportunity, I helped Lu Fan up; his arm had been cut by a stick, blood flowing freely. mother Li's face was filled with sorrow as she whispered to me, "You really shouldn’t stay here. This place... has long been cursed." 0

In the chaos, Lu Fan had been injured, and I struggled to help him back to our residence. His face was pale, but he gritted his teeth and persevered. He looked at me, his eyes filled with unwillingness and pain: "We really must find the truth; otherwise, they will force us into a corner." 0

I nodded. Although fear filled my heart, I knew we had no choice. The residents' behavior had spiraled out of control; some seemed to be manipulated by some force, completely losing their rationality. And I had to find a reason to keep going amidst this despair. 0

The next day, we decided to seek help from the police. Lu Fan's injury caught their attention, and they sent someone to inquire about the situation. I did my best to remain calm and detailed everything we had experienced. I described the discoveries in the basement—those strange symbols and objects—and the residents' abnormal behavior. When I mentioned the whispers in the hallway at midnight, the young officer frowned slightly. I noticed them exchanging glances, clearly finding my account hard to believe; however, an older officer diligently recorded every detail. Despite their skepticism, they promised to send someone to investigate the building. 0

With the police's involvement, the residents became even more panicked. Mr. Chen's behavior grew increasingly violent, while mother Li's mental state teetered on the brink of collapse. She became more controlling over Xiao Ming, not allowing him outside or even permitting him to speak with anyone. Once, I saw Xiao Ming trying to approach the window, but mother Li immediately rushed over and tightly grasped his wrist, her eyes filled with fear: "Xiao Ming, listen to your mother; don’t go near the window—it's dangerous outside!" Her voice trembled as if even the sunlight outside posed a threat. Xiao Ming said nothing; he merely lowered his head, his eyes filled with helplessness and exhaustion as if he had lost the strength to argue with his mother. His gaze grew more vacant; that look of hopelessness broke my heart. 0

Meanwhile, my hallucinations intensified. The whispers at night became clearer; sometimes I could even understand what they were saying—they were calling me, wanting me to join them. I felt myself being consumed by darkness as if I would lose myself at any moment. 0

I had to stay alert. I kept telling myself that I was a psychologist and understood that these were hallucinations and delusions caused by stress; yet this explanation felt so powerless against the cult's influence. The residents’ behavior resembled a form of "collective stress response," losing their ability for independent thought under extreme fear and pressure as they were deeply eroded by the cult's power. 0

The whispers at the end of the hallway grew increasingly real, threatening to engulf the entire building at any moment. Every time I passed there, a bone-chilling cold washed over me as if countless eyes were watching me from the darkness. I knew our time was running out; if we didn’t uncover the truth soon, everyone in this building would be swallowed by this evil force. 0
