Su Xing's face instantly turned crimson. She glanced around like a thief, afraid of being seen in this embarrassing situation.
"Stop messing around!" Shen Jingyu exclaimed. "Do you even realize what kind of occasion this is? What do you think it looks like bringing me in here openly?!"
Su Xing lowered her voice and spoke urgently beside him. In contrast, Shen Jingyu was bold and loud, declaring, "Consider yourself my girlfriend, fiancée, future wife!" As he spoke, he raised her hand, bringing it to his lips for a gentle kiss.
Su Xing could no longer tell if the sound she heard was her own sharp intake of breath or the astonished gasps from those around them. She felt like an ostrich wanting to bury her head in her wings and fly away.
"Wow! Is that the newly appointed Shen with a beautiful woman?" someone whispered.
"Did you hear? Shen says she's his fiancée! Is he about to announce it publicly? That’s going to crush all the hopes of the socialites in the city!" another voice chimed in.
"Who is that woman? She looks a bit familiar..."
If this continued, news about Su Xing, once the star of a popular bar, would surely resurface!
Furrowing her brows tightly, Su Xing struggled against Shen Jingyu's grip on her hand. Gritting her teeth, she glared at him. "Let go! No decent man in this city would want anything to do with me! If you don’t know that, you should read some newspapers or magazines!"
Shen Jingyu, seemingly unfazed, held onto her arm with an unyielding grip. "Who says I'm a decent man? I've been wanting you for years; I can't stop thinking about you. My mind feels like it's gone haywire."
Su Xing's beautiful eyes widened in shock. "You must be kidding! Are you some kind of beast in human clothing?"
Shen Jingyu calmly accelerated on the highway. "There are too many people here; otherwise, I'd show you just how uncivilized I can be."
Her worldview was collapsing.
Su Xing chose to surrender selectively; her pride wasn't as thick as a fortress wall. "What do you want?" she asked softly.
To Shen Jingyu's ears, this was clearly a sign of weakness! He felt secretly pleased and thought to himself that his secretary had been right—borrowing that "Love Manual" was indeed useful!
Su Xing hurriedly left the center of the stage, a place filled with gossip and intrigue. She couldn't allow her bad reputation to recklessly affect Shen Jingyu, dragging him into the mud with her. He was no longer that poor boy; he was now the heir of one of the city's top conglomerates. They shouldn't have any ties to each other anymore.
However, reality seemed to have other plans for Su Xing. Shen Jingyu made his demand clear: "Stay by my side tonight. From now on, whenever I stand in the spotlight, you must be there with me. I told you, all my glory belongs to you."
Su Xing's heart raced. "You can't say such things! Don't introduce me as your whatever to others!"
"Hmm? What?" Shen Jingyu smiled contentedly and then pulled Su Xing along toward the hotel entrance.
About a dozen prominent figures in the city naturally parted ways for them, creating a clear path. Su Xing put on a formal smile, but once they entered the lobby, she immediately lowered her voice and retorted, "You know exactly what you're doing! If you truly don't care about your reputation, I wouldn't mind tearing down your stage myself. Do you understand?!"
"Oh," Shen Jingyu raised an eyebrow with a faint smile. It was clear he didn't take her threat seriously.
His face radiated a soft glow that made the women nearby secretly gasp in admiration; he was truly captivating. Why wasn't he hers?
As for the Mu siblings, who were almost left behind, their jaws nearly dropped in shock.
Mu Beiyao remarked dryly, "If they rolled out a red carpet right now, I would suspect these two rows of people are sending them off to their wedding night."
Mu Beiming nodded vigorously at his sister's insight. "Sister is brilliant!"
Then Mu Beiyao coldly led their group to follow Shen Jingyu and Su Xing. At the same time, she noticed that among the men behind them, more than half were casting glances at Su Xing's back that carried a hint of something else.
Heaven had certainly dressed Su Xing too attractively. But even in simple clothes, she was captivating; it was hard to tell whether this was Shen Jingyu's fortune or misfortune.
Later that evening, Shen Jingyu's rivals would at least fill two tables.
The venue was on the top floor, and all eight elevators in the lobby were set to go up only mode, so they quickly encountered each other again.
However, just a few steps later, when Mu Beiyao saw Su Xing and Shen Jingyu again, the smiles on their faces had vanished completely.
It turned out they were standing before a man whom everyone recognized but none knew well.
The man provocatively shook his head and said, "Tsk tsk tsk, back when your mother forced your father to hang himself, did you know he was Shen Zhengxin's son?"
Mu Zhiyuan, with a square face and a slightly plump build, stood with his hands in his pockets, looking at Shen Jingyu while tilting his head back slightly. He lacked the grace to match his words, but his sharp tongue made him stand out in the private banquet hall.
His contemptuous gaze shifted from Shen Jingyu's face to Su Xing beside him. Shen Jingyu instinctively moved his shoulder to block Su Xing from view. However, Mu Zhiyuan's words ignited anger in both of them.
"Son of a lowlife likes to hang around lowlifes, huh? This trash has been played out by the city's elite; how can you, Shen Jingyu, even look at him? Aren't you ashamed?"
Before Mu Zhiyuan could finish his sentence, he didn't even see how Shen Jingyu struck. Suddenly, everything went dark, and he felt a ringing in his ears as he fell to the ground.
Around them, people watched as Mu Zhiyuan spat out two teeth.
"That punch was really hard." Mu Beiyao stood just a step away from Su Xing. Although Mu Zhiyuan was her cousin, she held him in disdain and looked down on him.
During this time, he had used numerous dirty tricks to harass Su Xing but had never succeeded. Perhaps it was because of Shen Jingyu; regardless, he was someone she found utterly repulsive.
Yin Beiyao had encountered Mu Zhiyuan's scheming several times before and had already severed ties with him. She had intended to step in for Su Xing again but hadn’t managed to act in time.
It turned out that having a companion gave her confidence; at least in that moment, Su Xing felt an overwhelming sense of relief. She didn’t even blame Shen Jingyu for his actions—after all, such behavior would undoubtedly have negative repercussions. Yet subconsciously, she was pleased to see Shen Jingyu strike him!
Because Mu Zhiyuan owed Shen Jingyu that much.
Whenever Su Xing thought about it, she recalled the first time she saw Shen Jingyu's letter: "The eldest son of the Mu Family doesn’t like me very much; he stole my allowance from Uncle Mu. My mother has never given me any living expenses; she doesn’t hear me tell her that Mu Zhiyuan took my money. He doesn’t let me eat their food and makes me throw up before bed."
Once, when her mother saw Mu Zhiyuan and Mu Zhicheng making her vomit in the corner, she walked past with an expressionless face. Living felt meaningless; perhaps it was better to find her father.
Su Xing’s heart ached at the memory. She had painstakingly uncovered the sunny boy within herself; how could she allow such a scoundrel to insult him? If killing were not against the law, this vermin would have died countless times beneath her feet!
