"Shen Jingyu, did you hear that? I just said I like you, I love you. As long as you can still hear me, I want to tell you that in this lifetime, I can’t live without you. I want to marry you! So you can’t die, do you understand? You still have to take me out of here!"
Su Xing's choked sobs were enough to shatter Shen Jingyu's heart. Yet, he still craved to hear more of this raw and genuine confession, one that would be etched in his memory for the days to come. And when this woman eventually wavered, he would be sure to bring it up to catch her off guard!
Su Xing was already terrified of such dark places. With two fierce beasts having emerged, who knew what else might come next? Without Shen Jingyu around, did she dare venture anywhere else? Besides, she had no sense of direction at all.
"You scoundrel! You brought me out here and then just abandoned me? You might as well have let me perish back in that house; at least I wouldn’t be torn apart by these wild beasts! I wouldn’t even have a complete corpse left!"
As she turned around in circles, she clung to a massive tree. Looking up, the dense leaves obscured her view—she couldn’t tell if someone was hiding up there. What if Shen Jingyu was up there?
"I’m telling you, Shen Jingyu! I’m afraid of heights! You know that, yet you want me to climb this tree to find you? You’re such a jerk! Are your teammates all useless too? Luo Hao with his big mouth—he just talks a lot but is nowhere to be found when it matters. Why aren’t they coming to rescue you?"
"I really owe you for this! You don’t even know how to deal with that Han Ruoxi while you're abroad, and now you’ve brought back a rival for me! You say you've changed?"
"If I manage to rescue you, just wait until we get back—I’ll hang you up and give you a good beating! If you don’t tell the truth, I’ll hang you upside down from the Poplar Tree in front of my villa!"
"Woohoo, I haven’t even lived in the villa yet, and now it’s going to become an inheritance!"
"Shen Jingyu, wake up quickly! I can’t go up or down!"
Su Xing didn’t even know how she had managed to climb up there. When she looked down, it seemed like she was far from the ground. Her legs went weak instantly, but she clung tightly to the trunk of the tree, too scared to move.
"Boss, are you really treating Sister-in-law like this?"
"Brother Yu, playing with fire will only lead to self-destruction! If the hero doesn’t save the beauty in time, he’ll definitely end up in a fiery chase for his wife later on!"
"Eavesdropping on sweet nothings may feel good for a moment, but once the truth comes out, your life won’t be safe!"
A rustling sound seemed to echo through the air, as if someone was speaking.
"Is that you?" Su Xing's voice trembled.
"It's me!" Shen Jingyu stepped toward the large tree. Before reaching it, he turned back and said, "You all stay back. If anyone dares to leak even a word about what just happened, military law will be enforced!"
"You, when did you come down? I've been calling you for ages, and you didn't hear me?"
"Are you badly hurt? I saw that snake bite you. Where else are you injured? Did you fall from the tree?"
"Huh? Can you still walk? A Yu, say something!"
"Star, which question should I answer first?" Shen Jingyu stood beneath the tree, feeling a mix of amusement and exasperation.
Listening to Su Xing's concern for him and her reckless search for his safety made Shen Jingyu's heart feel as if it were submerged in honey.
Su Xing's limbs were nearly devoid of strength.
Shen Jingyu noticed her legs were shaking violently; she was on the verge of collapsing. He needed to think of a way to get her down quickly.
He immediately raised his hands above his head. "I'm right beneath you. Try to loosen one foot and test it downward; I'll catch your foot with my hands. Then slowly let go of the other foot and step down onto my shoulder."
Su Xing immediately refused, "No way! Your shoulder is injured! What about your arms? Aren't they affected too? Don't try to catch me! I can get down myself, but you need to stand behind me."
"You can do it!" Shen Jingyu encouraged. Su Xing closed her eyes and then opened them again, forcing herself to regain her composure.
"Star, don't be afraid. I'm right beneath you. Just take two more steps down, and I'll be there to support you. I'm right behind you; you'll be fine."
In truth, the tree was easy to climb, with plenty of footholds available. Su Xing hadn't climbed very high at all. However, what truly challenged her was the fear within her heart.
Moreover, in the dark of night with the wind howling, when she looked down at the tangled weeds below, she instinctively felt as if she were standing at a great height with no safety net beneath her.
To put it simply, it was a matter of inner fear.
Even though she lived in a multi-story building at home and wasn't afraid of heights there.
Yet Shen Jingyu remained vigilant and cautious.
As Su Xing slowly descended two steps, Shen Jingyu positioned his palm under her shoe sole for support.
"Don't push yourself; your shoulder injury will hurt!"
"It's fine, don't worry. You'll be back in my embrace soon."
Shen Jingyu continued to softly comfort Su Xing.
Su Xing's movements were slow, and she felt Shen Jingyu's large hand gripping her waist. Eventually, he held her tightly in his arms.
A sharp intake of breath escaped Shen Jingyu; he had underestimated the Python. Its mouth was lined with barbs, and when it bit into his shoulder, it left several deep cuts that extended down his arm. The wounds had not yet been treated, and the sudden movement made the pain all the more apparent.
"What happened? Is it your shoulder? Where else are you hurt? Please tell me so I can check!"
Su Xing was frantic. Once she steadied herself, she tried to inspect Shen Jingyu's injuries, but before she could complete her movement, he pulled her into his embrace again.
"I love you, Su Xing. I've loved you for ten years."
"No matter how far I am from you, my heart has always belonged to you alone."
Coughing slightly, he asked, "Did you hear what I just said?"
Su Xing nearly bit her tongue in frustration; how could he say such things so casually?
Although it was true that her feelings had spilled out in that moment, her fear and concern for Shen Jingyu had made her words slip out uncontrollably. She couldn't even remember exactly what she had said. But there was no doubt that she had confessed to him.
In the future, Luo Hao would inadvertently reveal this secret, and it wouldn't just be Shen Jingyu who heard her heartfelt words. At that moment, Su Xing would undoubtedly be devastated.
"If it weren't for the fact that I was afraid you'd fall and get hurt, I'd want to hear you say that until dawn!"
Shen Jingyu's thoughts were laid bare without any pretense.
Yet Su Xing continued to struggle: "How are you feeling? That Python's eyes looked terrifyingly red; is it venomous? Are you experiencing any symptoms of paralysis?"
"Is your mind clear? Should we take that snake back for someone to analyze its venom?"
Shen Jingyu released Su Xing and gazed at her with eyes full of affection. "You look most beautiful when you're worried about me and loving me."
