Although Fang Keyu lived in the same dormitory as Xiao Wentai, he actually knew very little about him. Much of what he did know came from reading the newspapers.
Had Xiao Wentai been in the news? Indeed!
Last year, during their first semester of college, a horrific series of murders occurred in Xingyang City. The killer was extremely twisted, targeting women wearing black stockings, which caused immense panic among the citizens.
One night, Xiao Wentai suddenly asked Fang Keyu, "Do you want to be famous?"
Fang Keyu was a bit taken aback and casually replied, "Of course I do!"
"If you want to be famous, just follow my lead. If we succeed, our photos will be on the front page of Xingyang Daily tomorrow!" With that, Xiao Wentai pulled out a pair of black stockings and some women's clothing (he had no idea where he got them) and urged Fang Keyu to change into them.
Fang Keyu, somewhat dazed, surprisingly changed without a second thought.
What happened next is likely already guessed by everyone.
That night, the two of them indeed caught the twisted killer and turned him over to the police.
The next day, the entire city was in an uproar; Xiao Wentai and Fang Keyu became household names overnight.
As a result, Xiao Wentai gained a massive following (rumor has it his fans called themselves "Disinfectants").
Of course, there were times when Fang Keyu felt a bit resentful about it all.
That night, capturing the murderer relied heavily on the Fang Family Grappling Technique. Xiao Wentai merely shouted encouragement from the sidelines, contributing nothing, yet all the glory went to him.
During this winter break, both Xiao Wentai and Fang Keyu stayed in Xingyang City, where they found temporary jobs.
One day, after a busy morning, Fang Keyu returned to their dormitory and saw Xiao Wentai meticulously grooming himself in front of the mirror, his hair neatly combed.
This was quite unusual; Xiao Wentai was known for being lazy and rarely bothered to tidy his messy hair. The only time he had done so was during an interview with reporters from a newspaper and a television station.
Before Fang Keyu could say anything, Xiao Wentai asked, "Do you still want to be famous?"
"Why? Is there another case?"
"Exactly! But this one is even more troublesome."
"Is it about the murder case on New Year's Eve at Beijiang University that has been making headlines lately?" Fang Keyu inquired.
Xiao Wentai nodded and replied, "This case is quite strange and involves my high school classmate Feng Zitian. I have to get to the bottom of it!"
Xingyang City is a provincial capital named for its location north of the Galaxy River.
It is home to two prominent universities: Beijiang University, located near the northern suburbs, and Xingyang University, where Xiao Wentai studies, situated on the edge of the southern district.
Both universities are well-known, but due to last week's murder incident, Beijiang University seems to have gained even more notoriety as people throughout the city and province discuss this bizarre case.
Xiao Wentai and Fang Keyu boarded the bus number 119, which conveniently took them from the entrance of Xingyang University to the final stop at the Phoenix Student Dormitory of Beijiang University.
As soon as they got off, they headed straight for Dormitory Building 18.
Waiting for them at the foot of the building was a tall, thin young man with a refined demeanor.
This person was Feng Zitian.
Feng Zitian looked unwell; his eyes were bloodshot and he had dark circles under them.
Although it had been a week since the incident, the psychological shadow it cast would likely take much longer to dissipate.
"Finally, we have the great detective Xiao here!" Feng Zitian's smile seemed somewhat forced.
Xiao Wentai chuckled, embodying the image of a great detective. He pointed to Fang Keyu and said, "This is my assistant."
Fang Keyu was short, with dark skin and a muscular build, appearing somewhat simple-minded. His parents certainly chose an apt name for him—"Ke Yu," which could be interpreted as "simple."
Feng Zitian thought to himself: What use could this simpleton possibly be?!
A significant doubt lingered in his mind.
