At the entrance of Maple Leaf Village, the morning sun cast its warm glow on the ground, yet it could not dispel the lingering sorrow in the air.
Leon, dressed in a sleek black outfit, stood beside Alex, who was leading two strong steeds. The saddles were laden with heavy packs, carefully prepared supplies for their long journey ahead.
Leon's gaze wandered through the village, each corner holding memories of his time with Alice, Oliver, and the villagers. His eyes were filled with affection and reluctance, and his steps felt unusually heavy, as if every movement drained him of energy.
Not far away, Alice and Oliver hurried toward him. Tears shimmered in Alice's eyes, her hair tousled by the breeze, making her look even more pitiful. Oliver's expression was serious, his gaze reflecting both concern for Leon and a hint of unspoken complexity.
“Leon, are you really going to leave?” Alice asked, her voice trembling as she clutched the hem of her clothes tightly, as if that could keep Leon from departing.
Looking at Alice brought a sharp pain to Leon's heart. He slowly reached out to gently tuck a strand of hair behind her ear. “Alice, I have to go. There are family matters I need to resolve. Only then can I truly create a stable future for you all.” His voice was low and resolute, filled with deep love and commitment to Alice.
Oliver stepped forward and patted Leon on the shoulder. “Leon, the road to the capital is long; you must be careful.” His eyes conveyed sincere concern. Despite their previous conflicts, at this moment of parting, all unpleasantness had faded away.
Leon nodded slightly. “Oliver, thank you. I owe my quick recovery to both you and Alice's care during this time.” Gratitude shone in his eyes as he looked at Oliver.
Alice approached and handed Leon a delicate cloth bag. “This is some food I've prepared for you; eat it if you get hungry on the road. And here’s a talisman I made by hand; I hope it keeps you safe on your journey.” Her voice quivered as tears streamed down her cheeks.
Leon accepted the cloth bag and talisman, carefully placing them close to his heart as if they were the most precious treasures in the world. “Alice, don’t worry; I will return safely. Once I resolve my family issues, I will come back for you.” He held Alice's hand tightly, as if trying to transfer his strength to her.
Under everyone's watchful eyes, Leon slowly turned around and mounted his steed. He took one last deep look at Alice and Oliver and at the familiar village before raising his whip. The horse neighed loudly and galloped off into the distance.
Throughout the journey, Leon’s thoughts remained centered on Alice and Oliver. He recalled moments spent with Alice gathering herbs in the forest—her focused expression and gentle smile; he remembered the laughter shared with Oliver while fishing by the creek. Those ordinary yet beautiful moments had become his most cherished memories.
As time passed, they gradually distanced themselves from Maple Leaf Village and stepped into a vast wilderness. The blazing sun hung high in the sky, scorching the earth, while the swirling dust filled the air, making their journey even more arduous. Yet Leon's gaze remained resolute; he understood that only by enduring this difficult journey could he fulfill his promise and return to Alice and Oliver.
As night fell, Leon and Alex kindled a campfire in the wilderness. Leon sat beside the fire, watching the flickering flames, his heart heavy with worry for Alice and Oliver. He feared that something might happen in the village and that Alice would be heartbroken because of his departure.
"Sir, you should get some rest; we have a long way to go tomorrow," Alex gently suggested, breaking Leon's reverie.
Leon nodded slightly but found it hard to fall asleep.
He caressed the talisman that Alice had given him, feeling as if he could sense her warmth and love through it.
In this long and challenging journey, that love became his driving force, supporting him as he navigated through countless difficulties on his way to the capital.
