After Leon and Theodore successfully captured the the Claudie Family castle, their brief moment of joy quickly faded, replaced by a new crisis. Although the the Claudie Family suffered heavy losses in the battle, they were far from defeated. With urgent mobilization of their core forces, a counterattack composed of elite troops and experienced commanders swiftly advanced toward the castle.
When the scouts rushed in with the news, Leon and Theodore were inside the castle tending to injured soldiers and restoring order after the chaos of battle. Upon hearing the report, their expressions turned grave.
"I didn't expect the the Claudie Family to retaliate so quickly," Leon said, furrowing his brow, worry evident in his eyes. He understood that after such a fierce fight, their own soldiers were heavily wounded and exhausted, while the counterattack force of the the Claudie Family was full of morale and momentum.
Theodore clenched his fists. "We cannot easily give up this castle. It was won with the blood of countless brothers."
However, as they further analyzed the situation, they realized it was more complicated than they had imagined. The castle's defenses had been severely damaged in the previous battle and would be difficult to repair in a short time. If they chose to hold their ground, with their current forces and damaged defenses, it would be hard to withstand a fierce assault from the enemy. But if they chose to retreat, it would not only render their previous efforts futile but could also allow the the Claudie Family to regain strength, posing an even greater threat to their family.
In the castle's council chamber, Leon and Theodore gathered all surviving commanders to discuss strategies. The atmosphere was stifling, filled with anxiety etched on everyone's faces.
"My lord, I believe we should retreat. Given our current condition, we cannot hold this castle. We should conserve our strength and seek revenge another day," suggested a young commander.
"No!" Theodore immediately countered. "If we retreat now, how can we explain it to our fallen brothers? This castle is our family's honor and a crucial stronghold for our revenge."
After a moment of contemplation, an older commander spoke up. "But, Theodore, if we hold out, we may face total annihilation. We cannot gamble with the lives of our remaining brothers."
Disagreement erupted among them as everyone voiced their opinions passionately. Leon listened quietly but felt deeply conflicted inside. He thought of those brave soldiers who had sacrificed themselves in battle for the honor of their family. If they abandoned the castle now, their sacrifices would seem meaningless. Yet he also understood that blindly holding on could lead to more deaths among his men—something he could not bear.
At that moment, a soldier rushed in to report that enemies outside had begun to gather and prepare for an attack. Taking a deep breath, Leon stood up. "Everyone quiet down. We need to make a decision quickly." He looked out the window at the enemy forces poised for assault, his heart heavy with mixed emotions.
Theodore turned to Leon, asking softly, "What do you think, Leon?"
Leon remained silent for a long time before slowly speaking, "I understand everyone's thoughts. Retreating would preserve our strength, but we would lose too much; holding our ground might defend the family's honor, but the cost could be severe." Pain and helplessness flickered in his eyes. "Regardless, we cannot allow our brothers to sacrifice themselves in vain. I propose we hold our position for a while, utilizing the remaining supplies and the terrain of the castle to wear down the enemy's forces as much as possible. At the same time, we should send an elite team to secretly leave the city and contact nearby allies for support. If we find ourselves unable to hold out before our allies arrive, then we can consider retreating."
The others listened and nodded in agreement. Theodore patted Leon on the shoulder, "Let's do as you say. No matter the outcome, we'll face it together."
Thus, Leon and Theodore began to urgently organize their defenses. They personally led the soldiers in repairing the damaged walls, setting up obstacles, and preparing for the brutal battle that lay ahead. In this dilemma, they made a difficult choice, leading their soldiers with unwavering faith and fearless courage, teetering on the brink of life and death—all for the glory of their family and the hope of survival. They knew that every moment ahead could determine their family's fate, and they had to find a path to victory in this desperate situation.
