I sat by the river, downing bottle after bottle of beer.
The cool breeze whipped around me, making my head buzz.
The light from my phone screen was glaring, displaying the chat history between Li Qiang and that young female colleague.

My mother’s eyes widened in disbelief as she stared at me.
"I said, I’m not marrying Li Qiang."
My tone was calm but left no room for argument.
My mother was beside herself, stamping her feet in frustration.
"Wei Wei, don’t be ridiculous! The guests are all here. If you cancel the wedding now, what will people think of me?"
"Is face more important or my happiness?"
I looked at Mother, my gaze unwavering.
Mother was taken aback.
I knew that she had always hoped I would marry early and have a stable family.
But she loved me even more.
"Wei Wei, did something happen?"
Mother asked cautiously.
I shook my head, remaining silent.
Some things couldn't be said just yet.
"Mom, please trust me this time. I won't joke about my happiness."
I held Mother's hand, my tone gentle.
She sighed and eventually nodded in agreement.
Suddenly, a commotion erupted outside the door, as if someone was arguing.
A tightness gripped my heart, and an ominous premonition washed over me.
