Sun Yu held Han Xue close as the elevator doors opened with a ding.
The two of them stepped out, chatting and laughing as they made their way home.
“Wan'er, I’m back!”
Sun Yu called out while rummaging for his keys to unlock the door.
However, when he inserted the key into the lock, it wouldn’t turn at all.
“Hm?”
He paused for a moment, then looked closely to find that the lock had been changed.
“What’s going on?”
Han Xue noticed something was off as well.
Sun Yu's heart sank, and he quickly pulled out his phone to call the property management office.
They said they had no idea what was happening.
“That’s impossible. Wan'er wouldn’t change the locks without telling me,” Sun Yu muttered to himself.
“Could it be that your wife… Lin Wan'er knows about us and deliberately changed the locks to kick you out?” Han Xue asked tentatively.
“No way, she doesn’t know,” Sun Yu denied vehemently, but there was a hint of uncertainty in his tone.
He began frantically dialing Lin Wan'er’s number.
“Sorry, the number you have dialed is turned off.”
He tried sending a message on WeChat, only to find that his messages were being rejected.
He had been blocked.
"What... what is going on here..."
Sun Yu was completely panicked.
"Ah Yu, do you think Lin Wan'er sold the house and then ran away?"
Han Xue said with a feigned delight, secretly enjoying the situation.
"Impossible! The house is in my name; how could she sell it?"
Sun Yu suddenly remembered that the house had already been transferred to Wan'er, but he still clung to a glimmer of hope as he shakily dialed the real estate agent's number.
"Hello, is this Mr. Sun?"
The voice of the agent, Xiao Li, came through.
"Yes, Xiao Li, I need to ask you—has my house been sold?"
Sun Yu asked urgently.
"Oh dear, Mr. Sun, you just found out? Your wife sold the house a few days ago; all the paperwork is done. You didn't know?"
Xiao Li's tone was filled with surprise.
"Wan'er, why did you do this..."
Sun Yu closed his eyes in pain, his body trembling uncontrollably.
At that moment, a middle-aged man in a suit with a protruding belly approached them.
"Who are you?"
Sun Yu asked warily.
"I am the new owner of this house," the man replied coldly. "Now, please get out of my house immediately."
"This is my house! What right do you have to make me leave!"
Sun Yu shouted, his eyes turning red.
"Your house?"
The middle-aged man scoffed, "The property deed has my name on it. You say this is your house? What a joke!"
"Your wife has already sold the house to me. She took the money and who knows where she's off having fun while you're here playing the victim?"
Sun Yu slumped to the ground, his eyes vacant, like a soulless shell of a person.
"What do we do now, Ah Yu?" Han Xue sobbed.
Sun Yu ignored Han Xue.
His mind was consumed with thoughts of Lin Wan'er.
He picked up his phone and dialed Zhao Ya's number.
Zhao Ya was Lin Wan'er's best friend; she would surely know where Wan'er had gone.
The phone rang for a long time before it was answered.
"Hello, Sun Yu? What’s up?" Zhao Ya's voice sounded somewhat cold.
"Zhao Ya, where's Wan'er? Where did she go?" Sun Yu asked urgently.
"I don't know," Zhao Ya replied icily.
"You don't know? Aren't you supposed to be her best friend? How could you not know where she went?" Sun Yu couldn't believe it.
"I don't know, and even if I did, I wouldn't tell you."
Zhao Ya's tone was filled with disdain.
"You think Wan'er doesn't know about your mess with Han Xue? She has known all along! She just couldn't be bothered to expose you two scoundrels!"
"You..."
Sun Yu was left speechless.
"Let me tell you, Sun Yu, Wan'er has already quit her job. She never wants to see you again!"
"And she asked me to tell you that it's over between you two, completely over!"
With that, Zhao Ya hung up the phone.
Beep beep beep...
Listening to the busy signal on the phone, Sun Yu completely broke down.
He held his head in his hands and cried out in anguish.
"Wan'er, why did you have to treat me like this..."
"I was wrong, I really was wrong..."
"Please come back, I'm begging you to come back..."
...
On a distant beach, the sun shone brightly.
Lin Wan'er and Zhao Ya were lounging on beach chairs, enjoying the sun.
"Wan'er, that move of yours was ruthless! You kicked that scumbag Sun Yu to the curb and left him with nothing!"
Zhao Ya gave a thumbs up, looking impressed.
"He had it coming."
Lin Wan'er said lightly, her face devoid of any expression.
"But are you really just going to let it go like this?"
Zhao Ya still felt a bit unwilling.
"Are you really going to let that scumbag and that mistress off so easily?"
"What else can I do?"
Lin Wan'er smiled.
"Should I become the very person I despise?"
Zhao Ya fell silent.
"I'm ready to start a new life."
Lin Wan'er gazed into the distance, her eyes filled with determination.
"I want to live for myself."
"Mm!"
Zhao Ya nodded vigorously.
"I support you! Come on, cheers!"
The two women raised their glasses of juice and gently clinked them together.
The crisp sound of the toast seemed to echo like a prelude to a new life, carried by the sea breeze.
The future is still long.
"Um..."
Zhao Ya hesitated, wanting to say something but holding back.
"What’s wrong?"
Lin Wan'er asked, puzzled.
"Actually..."
Zhao Ya suddenly leaned in mysteriously to Lin Wan'er's ear.
"I received a call from that scumbag Sun Yu..."
Zhao Ya winked proudly.
"I told him everything you wanted to say."
"You..."
Lin Wan'er was both amused and exasperated.
"Aren't you afraid he'll come after you?"
"Afraid of what? I've disliked him for a long time!"
Zhao Ya said nonchalantly.
"Besides, you’re here, right?"
"You little devil..."
Lin Wan'er shook her head helplessly.
The two women exchanged a knowing smile, and everything was understood without words.
The sea breeze gently caressed them, as if carrying away all worries and troubles.
The future held promise.
And Sun Yu's nightmare was just beginning...
