Xu Shen was desperately explaining himself.
Seeing the person behind him remain unresponsive, he tried to calm himself down and continued his explanation. “Moreover, big brother, you just said that this incident happened a thousand years ago. The person behind him remained silent, staring at him with an emotionless gaze. Those hollow eyes filled Xu Shen with dread. If this guy decided to act now, Xu Shen felt he would truly have no chance to escape and might very well meet his end here.
As the silence stretched on, Xu Shen’s fear deepened with each passing moment. The atmosphere was so tense that it desperately needed a word to ease it. “Big brother, could you please say something? You really have the wrong person! Please don’t kill the innocent; I’m just a good kid…”
Although there was no sound, the air around them was filled with a complex scent—one moment it smelled like roasted meat, and the next it carried a metallic tang of blood. Suddenly, Xu Shen watched as the figure behind him transformed into a blazing inferno, flames consuming everything around him, even his clothes reduced to ashes.
The mingling scents combined with the blood-red sky created an oppressive atmosphere as the comforting sunlight seemed to vanish, leaving only a stifling heaviness in its wake. Xu Shen felt a deep sense of regret; he had unknowingly wandered into this unknown estate and had even spent a coin here. If he hadn’t gone through all this, he wouldn’t be risking his life now.
“Xu Shen!”
“Why are you still sleeping? Our leader has arrived! If they see you like this, they’ll definitely dock your bonus for this month! Wake up!”
Suddenly, his name echoed in his mind as a familiar voice called out to him. Was someone calling for him?
With a loud thud, just as the voice trailed off, Xu Shen gradually opened his eyes to find himself at his desk, cluttered with piles of documents. If he hadn’t reacted quickly enough, he might have been buried under that mountain of paperwork.
Once awake, Xu Shen saw Xu Xue beside him looking quite displeased. “You shameless idiot! Using our leader to scare me again! There’s no leader here; can’t you sleep quietly for once? You almost ruined my face with your nonsense!”
The room had been quiet during lunch hour, but after Xu Shen’s outburst, an even deeper silence enveloped the space, and the atmosphere grew increasingly tense.
