Yan Peng reported the details of the situation to Commander, presenting the text message that Han Ran had sent to Xiao Cheng before her death, along with other evidence he had gathered, including records of He Yaya's forged medical documents and several eyewitness accounts.
Xiao Cheng's hand trembled slightly as he held his phone, his face turning pale. He looked up, his eyes filled with terror as he gazed at Yan Peng.
He Yaya also saw the contents of the message, her face instantly blanching, her lips quivering, but she was at a loss for words.
After hearing the report, Commander's expression darkened further. He slammed his hand on the table and shouted angrily, "Xiao Cheng! As a Fire Captain, you have been negligent in your duties, delaying rescue efforts and causing such serious consequences. How can you still show your face in this uniform?"
He turned to He Yaya. "And you, He Yaya, your actions have already constituted intentional murder."
He slammed the note down on the table and roared, "We will investigate you!"
He Yaya's face turned ashen, her body trembling slightly. She looked at Xiao Cheng with a pitiful expression and whispered, "Xiao Cheng, I didn't... I just..." She tried to grasp Xiao Cheng's hand but was violently pushed away.
At that moment, her mother burst through the door with a loud crash.
She grabbed He Yaya by the hair and slapped her hard across the face, screaming hoarsely, "You murderer! Give me back my daughter! Give me back my daughter!"
The mother cried out in anguish. Seeing this, He Yaya immediately stepped in front of Commander, tears streaming down her face as she trembled and said, "Commander, this is all my fault. It’s my mistake; I dragged Xiao Cheng down. Please don’t blame him..." As she spoke, her body shook slightly, appearing weak and helpless.
My spirit floated above them all, silently observing everything unfold with mixed emotions. I watched my mother in despair, saw Xiao Cheng's expression of fear and regret, and noted He Yaya's feigned vulnerability. A surge of intense resentment and unwillingness welled up within me.
I clenched my fists tightly, my gaze cold and resolute. I would seek justice for my untimely death!
They must pay the price!
I slowly lifted my head, my gaze landing on He Yaya, my eyes filled with the flames of hatred.
My mother trembled as she pointed at He Yaya, tears blurring her vision. "Why... why did you harm my daughter? What did she do wrong?!"
She staggered over to Xiao Cheng, desperately questioning him, "Xiao Cheng, why did you do this? Why did you deceive my daughter?"
My mother's shaking finger pointed at He Yaya as she cried out in anguish.
The investigation results soon came in, confirming Yan Peng's suspicions.
The Commander waved his hand, signaling for those unrelated to leave.
The office fell into silence, broken only by the ticking of the clock on the wall—clear and piercing.
He Yaya's depression was a facade; she had deliberately exaggerated her condition to gain Xiao Cheng's sympathy and attention.
He Yaya's face was pale, her lips trembling, yet she was too weak to refute the accusations.
Xiao Cheng sat dejectedly in his chair, his hands covering his face as his body trembled slightly.
My mother trembled as she clutched my photo tightly in her hands, tears silently streaming down her face. "Five years! Five years of love, and this is how you treat her?!"
On the back of the photo were the words, "Hold your hand and grow old together."
