Nuan Nuan seemed to be affected by Wen Yan's anxious emotions, fidgeting restlessly and coughing a few times from the dust that fell from the bookshelf. Her small hand tightly clutched Wen Yan's sleeve.
Wen Yan, feeling flustered, finally set Nuan Nuan down and continued rummaging through the shelves.
Suddenly, her elbow brushed against an inconspicuous wood carving ornament tucked away in the corner of the bookshelf.
The ornament wobbled slightly, producing a faint "click" sound.
Immediately after, a wooden panel on the right side of the bookshelf sank inward, prompting Wen Yan to instinctively press down on it.
A soft mechanical whirring sound followed, and the wall on the left side of the bookshelf slowly retracted, revealing a hidden compartment.
Wen Yan paused for a moment, then realized this was a mechanism.
She was taken aback; she had never noticed such a hidden compartment in her study before.
Cautiously, she pressed down on the recessed wooden panel, and the hidden compartment opened slowly, unveiling its contents.
Inside the compartment lay a small black safe and a cowhide notebook.
The safe was quite small, lacking a combination lock; it simply held a black laptop inside.
Wen Yan stared for a moment before taking out the laptop.
After a moment of hesitation, she opened her computer.
The screen lit up, automatically playing a video. In the video, Shen Shi was wearing a clean white shirt, sitting in a chair in his study, smiling gently at the camera. Seeing Shen Shi's familiar face made Wen Yan's breath catch, and she nearly dropped the USB drive in her hand.
"Yan Yan, if you're watching this video, it means I have..." Shen Shi's voice came from the computer, tinged with a barely noticeable quiver. "I... went for surgery. The doctor said the risks are very high..."
Wen Yan picked up a piece of paper and unfolded it to reveal a marriage certificate, featuring a photo of her and Shen Shi, dated two years ago.
She stared blankly at the marriage certificate, memories flooding back to two years prior when Shen Shi had held up their marriage certificate, beaming as he said to her, "Yan Yan, we finally got married."
He took a deep breath, striving to control his emotions. "I truly love you. I've loved you for eighteen years, since the day we first met..."
He raised his hand to touch his cheek, as if trying to wipe away tears from the corners of his eyes. "I would do anything for you, including... including undergoing that surgery." His voice paused momentarily, revealing deep affection in his gaze. "But I've still decided to go through with it because I want to give you... give us a complete home..."
Shen Shi reached out to touch the wedding ring on his ring finger, a bittersweet smile gracing his lips.
"I know you’ve never... liked children. If I... am no longer here, please... take good care of yourself..." His voice grew softer, as if he were exhausting every ounce of strength he had left. "I love you, Yan Yan... very much..."
The video ended and the screen went dark. The study fell into silence, broken only by Wen Yan's heavy breathing and soft sobs.
Wen Yan sat dazed in her chair. "...So I went behind your back and had a sterilization procedure. I know you might blame me or even hate me for it, but I truly..."
Shen Shi's voice choked with emotion. "I really didn’t want to put you in a difficult position..." The video paused for what felt like an eternity before he spoke again. "I have this feeling that something might... something unexpected might happen. If I'm really not here..."
"I hope you..." His voice grew softer and more indistinct. "I hope you can take good care of yourself, and... and..."
The video abruptly cut off. Wen Yan stood there, dazed, holding her laptop, her eyes vacant as if she had lost her soul.
Shen Shi was really dead? He had undergone a vasectomy for her? Did he even foresee his own death? Everything felt like a nightmare that she couldn't accept.
Wen Yan murmured, her tone laced with complex emotions.
She set down the marriage certificate and picked up the diamond ring instead.
The ring was quite ordinary in style, but she remembered it well; Shen Shi had given it to her on her birthday, claiming he had bought it with all his savings.
At the time, she had dismissed the ring for being too small and had tossed it into a drawer, never to wear it again.
Wen Yan held the ring in her hand, feeling a chill from its surface. She closed her eyes, took a deep breath, and struggled to suppress the tumultuous emotions rising within her.
"Shen Shi..." she whispered, tears silently streaming down her cheeks. She couldn't believe that Shen Shi was truly gone. For the past two years, she had thought he was just pretending to be dead to gain sympathy; she never imagined he would actually leave her.
