Lin Menghan heard this and, without hesitation, quickly reached out to grab Xu Nancheng's wrist tightly. With a firm pull, she stepped forward. A slight smile curved her lips, hinting at a playful determination—she was intent on holding onto him! Xu Nancheng, suddenly caught off guard, wore a look of shock and confusion. His eyes widened in disbelief; he never expected Lin Menghan to be so direct and assertive, taking control of the situation entirely. For Xu Nancheng, this was the first time he had such intimate physical contact with a girl his age. Surprisingly, despite feeling flustered, he didn’t choose to break free or refuse her. Instead, an indescribable sensation surged within him, compelling him to follow Lin Menghan as she led the way.
As they walked, Xu Nancheng couldn't help but notice Lin Menghan's hand gripping his wrist. It was soft and warm, like a glutinous rice cake—so pliable it felt almost boneless. Her slender fingers brushed against his skin, sending a tingling sensation coursing through him. They arrived at a store selling bedding products. Lin Menghan stopped and looked at Xu Nancheng, saying, "The quality of this store is quite good! The owner is nice too. Shall we go in and take a look?" Although the shop wasn’t very well-known, it indeed offered quality items, just as Lin Menghan had said. Xu Nancheng sometimes accompanied Lin Zhen here to buy things, so he was somewhat familiar with it. However, he was curious and asked, "Han… Lin Menghan, how do you know this place is good? You’ve never been here before, right?"
Lin Menghan paused for a moment before putting on an exaggerated act, laughing in a somewhat forced manner. "Yes! I’ve never been here; I heard others say so! Hahaha…" Xu Nancheng raised an eyebrow at her expression—did she really think he would believe that? "Oh come on! Let’s just go in and check it out!" she said while pushing him into the store.
"Hello! Welcome!" A middle-aged woman approached them with a warm greeting; she was the shop owner. "You… hello!" Xu Nancheng stammered back shyly.
"Hello!" the owner replied cheerfully. "Oh! Isn’t this the kid from the Lao Xu family? Here to buy something today?" The owner recognized Xu Nancheng and greeted him with a smile.
"Um! I’m here… to help her… buy some bedding," Xu Nancheng said quietly, pointing weakly at Lin Menghan.
Upon hearing this, the owner glanced at Lin Menghan. "I haven’t seen this young lady before; has this young man got himself a girlfriend?" she teased with an unmistakable motherly grin.
"No! She’s… more like my sister…" Before Lin Menghan could speak up, Xu Nancheng blurted out with a flushed face.
The owner looked at Lin Menghan again, who quickly nodded in agreement. "Mm-hmm!" she affirmed that indeed she could be considered Xu Nancheng's sister. However, her gesture was far too cute! Deep down, she didn’t want to just be seen as Xu Nancheng's sister…
The owner seemed skeptical but didn’t press further; after all, it was their personal matter. "Alright then! You two take a look around! If you have any questions, just ask me! We’re all familiar here."
As soon as they entered the store, Xu Nancheng spotted a pink bunny-patterned bedsheet and walked over to examine it. He thought it looked adorable and felt that the quality was good too. He mused that girls generally liked cute things… probably.
"Hey… um Lin Menghan, what do you think of this one?" Xu Nancheng asked while pointing at the bedsheet. He felt it suited her well and had a youthful vibe.
"It’s very cute! But… I’m not really into this style," Lin Menghan replied honestly; she preferred something more minimalist. Although this was suitable for her taste-wise, it felt too flashy.
"Oh…," Xu Nancheng visibly deflated at her response. He often craved validation; when he succeeded in impressing someone, he felt elated; but when he failed, he felt useless and disappointed.
Seeing his reaction, Lin Menghan quickly changed her tune: "But I think it looks lively and isn’t bad at all. Let’s go with this one!" Her change of heart felt forced and awkward. Yet Xu Nancheng's expression brightened instantly as if he were a child receiving praise.
Lin Menghan rolled her eyes at him: he really changed his mood faster than flipping pages in a book! But thankfully he was easy to please! To complete the set, they also picked out matching pillowcases and blankets. After paying for their items, they stepped outside to find a snack shop.
Lin Menghan peered eagerly inside as if she were about to drool. Noticing that she had slowed down beside him, Xu Nancheng turned around with a frown and asked, "Can you walk any faster?" When he fully turned around, he saw Lin Menghan staring intently at the snacks.
Xu Nancheng glanced at her figure and then back at the array of snacks inside the shop; doubt crept into his mind—wasn’t she supposed to be someone who didn’t eat much? Why couldn’t she seem to move away from all that food?
"Do you like snacks? Should we buy some?" Xu Nancheng asked since his dad had sent him out to buy things anyway.
"Sure!" Lin Menghan’s eyes sparkled as she looked at him as if saying: You understand me! She rushed inside to buy plenty of snacks; among them were mostly strawberry-flavored milk candies.
Xu Nancheng wondered if she particularly liked those kinds of sweets?
