"What's going on, Nancheng? Why do you always keep quiet?" Chen Yi asked anxiously.
In the past, they could tolerate it to some extent, since Dai Hao would only throw a few sarcastic remarks here and there, gossiping behind their backs. But this time, Dai Yan had completely lost it, confronting them head-on without any regard for anyone's feelings. This had left several of them furious, except for Xu Nancheng.
Xu Nancheng remained silent, standing there submissively.
"What do you mean? Why are you saying that about Nancheng?" At that moment, Lin Menghan spoke up. Normally calm, she was no longer willing to hold back.
"I told you, he’s nothing! What can you do about it?" Dai Yan sneered, tossing his head back arrogantly.
Lin Menghan was ready to charge at him but was held back by Xu Nancheng.
"Lin Menghan, there's no need for this!" he said softly, keeping his head down.
Lin Menghan wanted to say more, but seeing Xu Nancheng's expression, she swallowed her words.
"Hey, classmates! Is there anything that can't be discussed properly? Why are you causing a scene at my stall?" The owner of the stall looked worried and quickly intervened. After all, he was just running a small business; if this continued, how could he make any sales?
Moreover, he noticed they were all from the same class. What couldn’t they talk about nicely?
Seeing the owner step in like this, the group felt it would be inappropriate to continue arguing. They shot a fierce glare at Dai Hao before grabbing their unfinished skewers and walking away.
"Wait for me!" Xu Dong wanted to fight but was pulled back by Chen Yi.
"Oh please! I'm so scared of you! Go ahead and try to beat me!" Dai Hao shouted defiantly, completely shameless.
The four of them walked a bit further and sat down on a bench by the roadside.
Lin Menghan was curious. "Who exactly is this Dai Hao?" They took turns explaining everything to her.
"Dai Yan is the top student in our class—good grades but a terrible person. He often bullies and mocks others, and Xu Nancheng is one of his targets."
"Anyway, little sister," Chen Yi said seriously, "if you see him in the future, keep your distance."
"Okay," Lin Menghan replied obediently. "It's foolish to rush into danger knowing it's there!"
"But Nancheng! Tell me! What are you afraid of? Why don’t you let us deal with him? He started it!" Xu Dong could no longer hold back; his cheeks flushed with anger as veins bulged on his forehead.
"Exactly, Nancheng! Why should we be afraid of him?" Lin Menghan echoed indignantly in a low voice.
They all understood why Xu Nancheng was afraid of him. There was no special reason, unlike in novels where the other party had a stronger background that made them unapproachable. In fact, his family situation was quite poor; his mother had passed away when he was ten, and later his father abandoned him. It was his grandparents who raised him, perhaps too indulgently, and lacking maternal love, which shaped his character.
Xu Nancheng feared him simply because he was too timid to fight back; that was all. He had no real reason to be afraid of Dai Yan.
The night was dark as ink, with the moonlight blocked by tall buildings, leaving only a few scattered beams of light. Xu Nancheng stood at the street corner, feeling a mix of emotions in his heart.
"There’s no need for this! You don’t have to go against him!" Xu Nancheng murmured softly, lowering his head.
"What do you mean? Why do you keep saying there’s no need?" Xu Dong's fists tightened.
"You’re just saying what he said about me being pitiful," Xu Nancheng replied, his words drifting like fallen leaves in the night breeze, tinged with helplessness and sorrow.
Bang!
"Nancheng! Are you okay?"
He wanted to say something; he wanted to tell Chen Yi and Xu Dong that they didn’t need to confront that guy Dai Hao on his behalf. He felt unworthy of their efforts; they only saw him as someone pitiful and chose to stand by him out of sympathy.
Xu Dong's fists clenched tightly, and he could almost hear the faint cracking sound of his knuckles. He couldn't stand Xu Nancheng's self-deprecation and denial. He also couldn’t accept that Xu Nancheng viewed their friendship this way. They thought that as long as they treated him like a brother, Xu Nancheng would understand their intentions, but they were wrong.
To Xu Dong, Xu Nancheng was not just a friend; he was an indispensable brother in his heart. He couldn’t accept that Xu Nancheng would speak so lowly of himself.
Before Xu Nancheng could finish speaking, he saw Xu Dong throw a punch.
Chen Yi noticed Xu Dong’s movement and shouted, "Hey!" but it was too late for him to stop it.
The punch landed heavily on Xu Nancheng's chest. He let out a muffled groan, pain coursing through him as he staggered back and finally fell onto the cold concrete ground.
This scene unfolded like a slow-motion shot from a movie, leaving everyone present shocked and heartbroken.
The one who felt the most pain was Lin Menghan. She quickly snapped out of her shock and rushed to Xu Nancheng's side, crouching down beside him with concern etched on her face.
Xu Nancheng lowered his head, unable to meet Lin Menghan's worried gaze. He softly replied, "I’m fine; you really don’t have to do this for me! You shouldn’t feel obligated because you see me as pitiful."
"Enough! If you say one more word..." Chen Yi couldn't bear it any longer and shouted loudly, cutting off Xu Nancheng's words.
Xu Nancheng fell silent.
Lin Menghan really didn't want to see them like this. She hurriedly said, "Hey, you two, stop arguing! Chen Yi, Brother Xu Dong, can you both tone it down a bit? I'll go and talk to him properly."
The two were still fuming. Upon hearing Lin Menghan's words, Chen Yi sighed and replied, "Alright, sister, you try to persuade him. We consider him a brother, but honestly, I..."
Chen Yi couldn't find the words to continue.
"Okay! Then I'll count on you, sister!" With that, he grabbed Xu Dong and walked away.
"Lin Menghan, let's go," Xu Dong said simply. He didn't reach out for her and stood up to leave on his own.
He felt weak and pathetic, unable to face her.
He walked home lost in thought, with Lin Menghan trailing behind him. She tossed the unfinished barbecue into the trash bin.
Her mood was also sour; what had started as a pleasant meal had turned into such a mess.
