Satisfying her wasn't out of the question.
"Yeah, I will," he replied, lowering his head.
He thought to himself, this must be half a success, right?
Then, with his head down, his hand slowly inched closer, inch by inch.
Finally, he grasped Lin Menghan's small hand. She flinched slightly but did not resist.
Her little hand was burning hot from shyness. Xu Nancheng squeezed it gently; it felt so soft.
He wished to hold her hand forever!
Lin Menghan shyly said that before they were officially together, they could only hold hands and nothing more.
She could kiss him, but he couldn't kiss her! Otherwise, she would be too embarrassed.
Although he had held hands before, it was mostly just the wrist; nothing compared to the delight of holding her small hand.
"Alright! I, Xu Nancheng, keep my word!" His tone was firm, as if he were accepting a military order.
"Nancheng, can you let go for now? I'll let you hold my hand later." She was truly at her limit and felt like she might just give in!
Yet for some inexplicable reason, she found herself saying these things.
"Then who exactly is Lin Menghan?" Xu Nancheng wondered curiously; he wanted to know because not knowing made him uncomfortable.
Seeing that he was still going to ask and fearing that if she didn't answer, he might not let go of her hand, she thought perhaps she would tell him later. After all, he wouldn't be able to handle the jealousy anyway. "Just let go already! It might ruin everything." She felt herself blushing even more as she spoke.
"Okay." He finally released her hand. Her reassurance eased his mind, and his jealousy vanished in an instant.
First of all, if the dough kept cooking, it would turn into a paste. Secondly, if they continued holding hands, it would mean he had broken his promise for the day.
They both brought the dough out without saying a word.
Only Xu Nancheng called out, "Dad! Dinner's ready!"
"Hey! Okay!" Xu Wenzhao finally woke up from his dreams, his voice still somewhat hazy.
However, at the dining table, everyone sat in silence; the atmosphere became a bit oppressive for a moment.
Focusing on their own meals was a good habit, but to the two adults present, it didn’t bode well.
Xu Nancheng and Lin Menghan, the young couple, surprisingly weren't being affectionate with each other. They didn't even glance at one another.
Wasn't the atmosphere a bit off today? Hadn't yesterday's issues been resolved? Xu Wenzhao chewed on his noodles, forcing a smile.
"No, nothing's wrong," Xu Nancheng shook his head, deliberately avoiding looking in Lin Menghan's direction.
Lin Menghan, with a noodle dangling from her mouth, was also shaking her head vigorously. After all, the tension had passed, and both felt shy now.
"About the kids, it's best for adults not to pry!" Lin Zhen thought it was awkward to bring up what he had just seen. He kicked Xu Wenzhao lightly under the table.
Xu Wenzhao winced in pain and realized he wouldn't get any answers, so he decided to keep quiet.
In the heavy silence, they finished breakfast; the adults went off to work while the children stayed at home. Xu Nancheng didn't know how to face Lin Menghan, and she felt equally unsure about how to approach him. They used to joke and play around, but now neither dared to speak first.
Xu Nancheng sat at his desk while Lin Menghan lay on the sofa. The room was filled only with their quiet breathing. Outside, the sun rose slowly above the horizon.
Suddenly, a series of knocks interrupted the silence.
Lin Menghan opened the door to find Chen Yi standing there, followed closely by Xu Dong. The two greeted her warmly.
Xu Nancheng also turned at the sound but stayed back as if he were an outsider.
Lin Menghan guessed they were likely there to apologize and welcomed them to sit down enthusiastically. Then she tiptoed over to Xu Nancheng's side; he instinctively leaned away until she pulled him back gently.
Noticing something was off between the two of them, Chen Yi raised an eyebrow and nudged Xu Dong's elbow. "Hey, Dongzi, do you think they had a fight too?"
Xu Dong looked over and sensed that something was indeed amiss but couldn't quite put his finger on it; he simply nodded in response.
Lin Menghan pulled him aside and finally mustered the courage to look into Xu Nancheng's eyes. "Nancheng," she said softly, "you promised me you'd listen today."
Xu Nancheng nodded in agreement.
"Could you go apologize first? Don't just stand there," she urged.
But Xu Nancheng hesitated; he usually dealt with issues online and wasn't brave enough to confront them in person.
"I'm getting angry here," she said, though deep down, she knew she couldn't truly get mad. Given the current situation, if she really got angry, it would mean they would be ignoring each other completely.
This was just her way of playing hard to get. Inside, she thought, Hurry up and agree with me! Quickly! Otherwise, I won't know how to face this situation.
Xu Nancheng, oblivious as ever, was flustered but finally managed to respond, "Alright."
In truth, Lin Menghan's intention was precisely that. She then pulled Xu Nancheng onto the sofa beside her.
At that moment, Chen Yi and another person were still chatting away, both wearing smiles and seemingly enjoying a light-hearted conversation. The atmosphere remained relaxed.
However, Xu Nancheng just sat there like a wooden statue, completely motionless.
Noticing this, Lin Menghan subtly shot him a glance, urging him to take some action.
Seeing the look in Lin Menghan's eyes, Xu Nancheng bit his lip and finally mustered the courage to get up and offer some snacks to the two of them before pouring them some water.
After completing these tasks, Xu Nancheng took a deep breath and began his journey of repentance: "Yi Ge, Xu Dong, I'm really sorry about yesterday."
His voice was abrupt and somewhat stiff, startling Xu Dongchen so much that he quickly interjected, "Hey hey hey, Nancheng, what are you talking about? We should be the ones apologizing!"
But Xu Nancheng ignored Chen Yi's words and continued speaking to himself: "I shouldn't have jumped to conclusions about you guys or said those ridiculous things."
He went on: "I also shouldn't have been talking to myself over there, belittling you and trampling on our feelings."
These words had come to him while he lay on Lin Menghan's lap last night, racking his brain for something to say today online. He never expected they would come in person instead.
"Can you forgive me?" he asked tentatively.
