In the classroom, Xu Nancheng found himself lost in thoughts of Lin Menghan—her eyes, her profile, her rosy lips, her silky hair, and the faint fragrance that seemed to linger around her. He was consumed by everything about Lin Menghan.
The invigilator was a teacher from another class, seated far enough away that she hardly recognized Xu Nancheng. All she saw was a student lying there with a silly grin on his face, which stirred a sense of annoyance within her. How could he smile during such a serious exam? Wasn't that disrupting the exam's discipline?
She approached him, tapping lightly on his desk and softly reminding him, "Student, please adhere to the exam rules!" Her tone carried a hint of seriousness.
Hearing the commotion, Xu Nancheng quickly wiped the smile off his face and sat up straight.
Before long, he found himself resting his head on the desk again, muttering to himself, "If I think about her this much, does she think about me too?"
Of course! Lin Menghan must be thinking about him! That was beyond doubt. Although she wasn't as academically inclined as Xu Nancheng, she had been a top student in high school and loved studying. Even after taking a year off from school and returning to her senior year, she felt no anxiety.
Moreover, this particular class was Chinese literature. As a girl who had read the material and understood the questions well, she could easily write down her thoughts and probably finished more than ten minutes ahead of Xu Nancheng.
After putting down her pen, she rested her head on the desk and pouted in boredom. "I want to be with my Nancheng! I want to see him! I want to hold his hand, have him hug me... even kisses would be nice!"
The more she thought about it, the more flustered she became; her cheeks flushed slightly as she shook her head to dispel those inappropriate thoughts. "Ah! Nancheng, do you ever think of your Lin Menghan?"
She lay back down on the desk again, reminiscing about the past—the boy who had rescued her from despair. As memories flooded back, tears began to fall unbidden. But for her, it wasn't entirely unwelcome; at least it meant she felt something deeply.
She recalled the joyful moments they had shared—walking hand in hand through the campus with laughter echoing in the air; sitting together in a library corner quietly reading a childish comic book while occasionally exchanging smiles; participating in various university activities together. Now all those memories were just remnants of the past, leaving behind only endless longing and pain.
She lifted her gaze toward the sky outside the window and silently prayed: "I hope everything is well with you in that world." Tears blurred her vision, yet she stubbornly stared into the distance as if she could see him through that blue sky.
After what felt like an eternity, the end of the exam was announced with a command to stop writing.
She quickly got up and wiped away her tears with a tissue; she didn't want Xu Nancheng to see her like this—it would only make him feel bad.
However, after crying, one's face looked significantly different than usual.
While she was still drying her eyes, she noticed a familiar figure appear at the door, slightly out of breath. Without needing to think twice, she knew it was Xu Nancheng—he had rushed over.
But for the chance to see the girl he cared so much about, it was worth it; at least that’s how he felt.
Xu Nancheng approached Lin Menghan and looked at the girl with her head bowed. "What's wrong? Did you not do well on the exam?"
He genuinely cared for her; seeing her looking down made him feel certain that something must be bothering her.
Lin Menghan shook her head. "No, I did fine."
"Then why?" he asked. "Is it because you didn’t want to see me?" He hadn't meant to sound accusatory; if taken that way, it would be quite annoying. Yet he couldn't help but think that whenever he saw them together, he felt unworthy of her.
His words came out haltingly as his tone fell low.
"No, no!" Lin Menghan hurriedly shook her head. It wasn't like he thought! She really wanted to see Xu Nancheng—she wanted it so much!
Xu Nancheng slowly crouched down, bringing himself to eye level with Lin Menghan. Seeing her red-rimmed eyes made his heart ache and feel flustered.
"What's wrong with you?" he asked, pulling out a tissue to wipe her tears.
"Really, it's nothing. Thank you, Nancheng." Sometimes, she truly wanted to confess her feelings to Xu Nancheng, but who would believe in the kind of emotions that only appeared in novels? So it was better not to say anything.
"Alright, fine! If you don't want to talk, that's okay, but you have to tell me eventually, alright?" Xu Nancheng thought that if she didn't want to share, then so be it. She always cried for no reason and never explained why.
"Okay." Lin Menghan nodded slowly.
If she didn’t want to talk, then that was fine. As long as she was okay, things would get better eventually!
He reached out and gently patted her head. Her silky long hair felt really nice!
Feeling the gentle touch on her head made Lin Menghan's heart feel a lot lighter, as if she had found someone to lean on.
Xu Nancheng glanced at the time; they still had five minutes left and could take a stroll.
After all, the ten minutes were just free time, and even when the time was up, they wouldn’t start immediately.
He gently took Lin Menghan's hand. "Lin Menghan, how about we go for a walk? It will make you feel much better!"
"Sure! Let’s go!" She actually wanted to walk around too; it was all thanks to those stubborn tears!
They arrived at the west side of the teaching building, where there was a corridor connecting the Three Buildings.
At that moment, the sky was as blue as a sapphire, completely cloudless and clear enough to be intoxicating. The school was situated at a high point, resembling a viewing platform in the sky. Standing there offered a breathtaking view of most of Ying Cheng—no exaggeration at all.
"Wow! Nancheng! This place is so beautiful! It feels so magnificent!" Lin Menghan was deeply captivated by the stunning scenery before her. Excitement sparkled in her eyes as all her previous negative emotions instantly vanished.
"Yes, this is indeed the most beautiful spot in Ying Zhong," Xu Nancheng said softly.
Especially in the evening when the sun sets; the view becomes even more breathtaking. He continued describing it with a tone full of anticipation.
