Under pressure, Xu Nancheng stopped paying attention to Lin Menghan and hurriedly got up to approach Lin Zhen. However, Lin Zhen pulled him into a corner, and unexpectedly, Lin Menghan followed them.
Seeing Lin Menghan arrive, Lin Zhen initially wanted to ask her to step aside. Before he could speak, Xu Nancheng confessed, "Mom, I was wrong! I shouldn't have been like that with Lin Menghan! If there's a punishment, just punish me alone; it has nothing to do with her. It's all my fault."
Lin Menghan shyly lowered her head. She regretted following them; she felt utterly embarrassed!
Lin Zhen's gaze sharpened, and his voice became noticeably deeper. "Really?"
"Yes." Xu Nancheng's tone lacked confidence; after all, he was lying.
Noticing that Lin Menghan had come along, Lin Zhen decided to be straightforward. "Xu Nancheng and Lin Menghan, you two are getting close. I don’t oppose your relationship."
"Huh? You don’t oppose us dating? Wasn’t that supposed to be last night?" Xu Nancheng realized his misunderstanding and felt a wave of regret wash over him. If he had known, he wouldn't have been so proactive! He secretly glanced at Lin Menghan, who was blushing furiously but still shot him a resentful look.
At the same time, both of them sighed in relief; thankfully, they hadn't been caught.
Lin Zhen didn’t notice their little exchange and continued speaking. "If you’re going to date, just make sure it’s serious! And remember, you’re still in school. You need to be cautious!" He emphasized the last part because he was worried they might act impulsively and make poor decisions.
The two nodded like little chicks pecking at rice, too afraid to say anything more. What mother would care about such things? Especially one who was lecturing them as a couple! They were mortified.
Lin Zhen didn’t say much more; discussing it further would only make things awkward.
At that moment, Xu Zhao stepped in with a serious expression, completely changing from his usual friendly demeanor. "First of all, I support your relationship; there’s nothing wrong with it. Everyone experiences infatuation during their youth. However, if anyone dares to hurt the other, I will ensure they leave with nothing—especially you, Xu Nancheng!"
He specifically emphasized Xu Nancheng's name to make sure he understood the seriousness of his words and not take advantage of their familial bond by treating girls poorly.
In contrast, he felt more at ease with Lin Menghan since she was a girl who understood more.
Of course, he knew these threats were just for show; he couldn’t bear to truly punish either of them.
"Did you hear that?"
The two were so embarrassed that their faces turned crimson down to their necks; they could hardly respond and merely nodded vigorously.
"Alright! You two go have fun for now; we’ll eat later," Lin Zhen suddenly felt they had overreacted and made the atmosphere awkward. As a parent, he shouldn’t have made it so uncomfortable! So he hurriedly dismissed them to lighten the mood.
Hearing that they could leave, Lin Menghan quickly said, "Auntie, we’ll eat outside!" With her head down, she grabbed Xu Nancheng’s hand and rushed toward the door; staying here was just too embarrassing!
"Hey! Lin Menghan! Xu Nancheng! The door isn’t even open yet!" Lin Zhen called out hastily. After all, it was still early; there were hardly any customers outside—who would bother opening shop? But Lin Menghan paid no mind to him.
She knew this well enough.
Lin Menghan ran out the door, unable to stay any longer; it was just too embarrassing. Once outside, she slammed the door shut and leaned against it, gasping for breath. It was truly mortifying.
Lin Zhen watched their retreating figures and sighed, feeling a bit foolish. He had acted too hastily and ended up making things awkward for the girl.
Xu Zhao scratched his head, sensing that something felt off as well.
Meanwhile, Lin Menghan leaned against the door, frantically tapping Xu Nancheng's chest while trying to keep her voice down. "Nancheng, this is all your fault! I'm so embarrassed!" With that, she buried her face in Xu Nancheng's chest, wishing she could find a place to hide for a lifetime.
Xu Nancheng was in a relatively better situation; after all, Lin Zhen had warned him many times before. But seeing Lin Menghan like this left him at a loss. He hung his head, letting her hit him without protest. He realized he had been too eager to admit his mistake without fully grasping the situation, leaving them both standing outside looking foolish.
After a while, Lin Menghan stopped hitting him. Xu Nancheng felt no pain; she was barely using any strength at all.
"Are we just going to stay out here?" Xu Nancheng asked, confused. They had left their phones and cash behind, making it impossible to even buy a meal.
Lin Menghan paused for a moment. She had been so focused on escaping that she hadn’t considered this aspect. Sighing, she realized they would have to go back inside eventually. How could she face everyone again? Just thinking about what had happened made her blush; at over twenty years old, it was the first time she had been humiliated like that.
Xu Nancheng stood there helplessly, unable to offer any assistance.
With no other options, they wandered around downstairs for over half an hour before returning to the front of the house. They soon discovered it was still too early; no shops were open yet.
They couldn’t just find a secluded spot to be affectionate like Lin Zhen suggested; after all, they were still students and needed to maintain some decorum. The way they had acted last night felt inappropriate even to them.
Standing at the door, they took deep breaths. "I’ll knock," Xu Nancheng said hesitantly. Returning home felt like visiting a distant relative—strangely unfamiliar.
He knocked on the door with a soft thud. His heart raced in anticipation.
Almost immediately, the door swung open to reveal Lin Zhen. The two of them instinctively lowered their heads.
Seeing them like this stirred mixed emotions within Lin Zhen; after living so long, it was the first time she felt less mature than children.
"Come in quickly! What are you doing standing out there?" She quickly tidied her hair and ushered them inside.
Xu Nancheng and Lin Menghan nodded silently and stepped inside with their heads down, not daring to hold hands as they usually would in front of Lin Zhen and Xu Zhao.
