I swallowed hard, my throat dry as if it were on fire. I struggled to control my trembling body and mustered the courage to look at Xu Master. 0

"I... I want to know the truth," I said, my voice barely above a whisper. 0

Xu Master seemed taken aback for a moment before letting out a low, rumbling laugh. 0

"The truth?" he echoed my words, a hint of mockery in his tone. "Everyone seeks the truth, yet few understand the cost of it." 0

He gestured towards the bustling stalls around us, where people were crowded together. 0

"Look at them," he continued. "They have obtained what they desired, but at the expense of something far more precious." 0

My gaze swept over the traders. A chill ran through me as the words of the old woman echoed in my mind: "Everyone has something they want, but the cost... is often much greater than one can imagine." 0

An elderly woman selling candied hawthorn smiled as she handed me a skewer of sweets. 0

"Try it, young man; if it's not sweet, you don't have to pay." 0

I hesitated for a moment but eventually took it. The candied hawthorn emitted a faint, enticing aroma that made my mouth water. 0

I took a bite, and an unusual sweetness spread across my tongue. Suddenly, the world around me blurred, and I felt as if I were enveloped in a thick fog. 0

I saw my parents smiling at me, their eyes filled with love. I reached out to grasp them, only to find they were drifting further away. 0

"Changqing," my mother’s voice was gentle yet sorrowful, "don't cling to the past; live well." 0

I jolted awake, realizing I was still standing in the marketplace, the candied hawthorn now gone. The old woman watched me with a knowing look in her eyes. 0

"Did you see? That is the cost," she said. "Even fleeting joy comes with a price." 0

I began to doubt whether my obsession with the truth was right or wrong. 0

I looked again at the woman who bought beauty. Her skin was smooth and delicate, yet cold and stiff, like a finely crafted doll. I reached out and gently touched her; a chill instantly spread throughout my body. I quickly withdrew my hand, filled with fear and disgust. Was this truly what she desired? 0

I turned my gaze to the man who bought wealth. His eyes were hollow, yet brimming with a desperate longing for money. He clutched the bills tightly in his hands, as if they were his only lifeline. A wave of sadness washed over me. In pursuit of wealth, he had lost the right to express himself and the ability to communicate with others. Had he truly obtained what he wanted? 0

My heart began to waver. The voice of Master Xu echoed again, interrupting my thoughts. "What are you hesitating for?" he asked, a hint of impatience in his tone. "I can give you whatever you desire." 0

I lifted my head to look at Master Xu. His figure was tall and mysterious, as if concealing endless secrets. "I..." I opened my mouth but didn't know what to say. Master Xu seemed to see through my thoughts. He stepped closer, gently caressing my cheek. 0

"Are you afraid?" His tone was soft and seductive. "There's no need to be afraid; I will give you everything you want." 0

His hand was cold and slick, making me feel a wave of nausea. I stumbled back a step, avoiding his touch. "No!" I shouted, "I don't want it!" Master Xu's hand froze in mid-air. 0

His gaze instantly turned cold and terrifying. 0
"You... refuse me?" 0
