It was a scent I had never encountered before, reminiscent of green bamboo and wild chrysanthemums. It must belong to a wealthy family! I felt inferior and instinctively shrank back. I was afraid he would notice the unpleasant odor on me.
By the time I regained my senses and wanted to ask who he was, Qiu Qinrui had already left. Later, when I returned to the market to sell my goods, I occasionally caught sight of him. It was only through the gossip of those nearby that I learned he was the young master of the the Qiu Family, deeply cherished by his family—a true son of heaven.
His fiancée was Mu Shu, the daughter of the the Mu Family, known for her gentle demeanor and exceptional talent. They were to be married in a year. I clearly understood that Qiu Qinrui and I belonged to different worlds, and I had never dared to dream of getting close to him. I could only watch him from afar, hoping that with time, this feeling would gradually fade away.
That was until I was summoned back by the the Mu Family when I turned sixteen. I still remember that day vividly; I was wearing a faded cloth garment with patches, happily telling my Foster Mother about a rare mushroom I had found on the mountain that could sell for a lot of money. Once I saved enough, I planned to take her to town to find a good doctor for proper treatment.
Then, a luxurious carriage stopped in front of my house, and a man dressed as a servant from a wealthy family respectfully invited me inside. Upon arrival at their estate, another maid led me into an elegantly decorated room.
I looked around in fear at the opulent surroundings. My mother wept as she embraced me, claiming that I was the true daughter of the the Mu Family. Mu Shu was merely a child who had been mistakenly taken; I had been swapped at birth.
Curiosity stirred within me—how could such a family lose their own child? If they lost her, why hadn’t they searched? Was it truly impossible to find her? Now they sought me out just for recognition?
Watching mother Xiang as she tearfully apologized and expressed her confusion made me feel uncertain yet gradually softened my stance.
What I didn’t expect was that the very next day, I learned their adopted daughter, Mu Shu, had fallen gravely ill and remained unconscious. The parents of the the Mu Family feared that their union with the the Qiu Family would fall through and desperately pleaded with me to marry Qiu Qinrui in place of Mu Shu.
Of course, I was willing; at that time, my affection for him was overwhelming. However, I did not want to marry him under these circumstances.
I refused.
mother Xiang cried pitifully, “Please! Our the Mu Family has so many lives at stake. Without the the Qiu Family as our support, we will be finished!”
"I heard that your Foster Mother is unwell? If you agree, I will return this silver note to you and find the best doctor for your Foster Mother," he said eagerly, pulling out the silver note.
Thinking about Foster Mother's illness, I nodded in agreement.
On the day of the wedding, Qiu Qinrui was drunk. When he was helped into the room, he stared at me in shock for a long time. His eyes were red, and he glared at me fiercely. "Is it you?"
"Young Master He," I replied softly, lowering my head.
He staggered slightly and suddenly laughed. "The the Mu Family really knows how to play; they let me marry a country bumpkin," he scoffed.
It turned out that after Mu Shu fell into a coma, Qiu Qinrui's father disregarded his objections and brought in a concubine. Fearing that his father's favored illegitimate son would affect his inheritance, Qiu Qinrui reluctantly agreed to marry a daughter from the the Mu Family. However, he never imagined that the person he would marry would be me.
All the wedding arrangements were made by others; he never came to see me even once. I tried on the wedding gown myself and chose the phoenix hairpin on my own.
The matchmaker asked me, "Are you satisfied with the bride?"
I nodded.
The matchmaker then asked, "Is the groom satisfied?"
I looked up just in time to see his mocking smile, filled with disdain and hatred in his eyes. I knew he was not satisfied.
