I felt a bit embarrassed and softly called out, "Young Master, Young Master."
He finally snapped back to reality, quickly straightening up and thanking me, "Thank you, Miss. I was rude just now; I hope you won't hold it against me."
I felt a little shy and quickly shook my head, "It's nothing, nothing at all. I'm just glad you're okay."
Suddenly, he smiled at me, a faint blush appearing on his fair cheeks.
His smile made me feel bashful, so I excused myself to get some fresh air and turned to step down from the carriage.
As I got off, he thanked me once more, and I politely replied that it was no trouble at all.
Arriving in a small town in Jiangnan, I found an inn and sat by the window that night, gazing at the starry sky.
I had never realized before how vast the sky could be.
The next morning, the inn sent a carriage to take me to Prefectural City.
When I got on the carriage, I noticed there was another passenger besides me.
The person wore a bamboo hat and waved excitedly when he saw me.
Only then did I recognize him as the elegant scholar from yesterday.
He took off his hat, revealing a handsome face, smiling brightly at me.
I was momentarily taken aback by his good looks and quickly regained my composure to stammer out, "Are you... also going to Prefectural City?"
He nodded and cheerfully replied, "Yes! I'm going to hold a poetry gathering there. Thank you for giving me a ride yesterday; it saved me from having to walk further."
I was surprised that he remembered this and quickly waved my hand dismissively, "No need to mention it; it was just a small favor."
He smiled and said, "My name is Yuan Kai. I'm a scholar who travels far and wide. If you have time in the future, you can come listen to my poetry."
I nodded and smiled back, saying it sounded good.
Throughout the journey, Yuan Kai took great care of me, engaging me in conversation continuously.
I had never been fond of talking much before because Qiu Qinrui always thought I spoke too much without much knowledge and considered me crude; he would frown whenever I spoke and sometimes even told me to be quiet.
Over time, I gradually became less talkative and even somewhat self-conscious.
But Yuan Kai's words didn’t carry any disdain for my lack of knowledge; instead, he encouraged me to read more books and shared many interesting stories from literature that captivated me.
I suddenly realized that there were people who would genuinely listen to what I had to say and were willing to help clarify things I didn’t understand.
Yuan Kai's painting was exceptionally good. As I looked at the portrait he had created for me, my heart was filled with surprise and joy.
Noticing that the colors were a bit too bright, I spoke up, "The colors are a little too vivid; I think they could be slightly darker."
He took my suggestion to heart and picked up his brush to adjust the colors on the paper. Just as I settled into silence, I heard a commotion behind me.
Suddenly, Yuan Kai seemed to notice something. He tugged at my sleeve, signaling me to be quiet. He quietly lifted a corner of the curtain and peered out, spotting a fight breaking out on the road in the distance.
Yuan Kai gestured for the driver to steer the carriage to a less conspicuous spot, and we sat inside, observing the situation. We could see two men attacking another man, swords clashing fiercely; even from inside the carriage, we could hear the sound of metal striking metal.
I had never witnessed such a scene before and nervously clutched Yuan Kai's sleeve, my fingertips turning white from the tension. Yuan Kai, who often traveled and had seen much of the world, reassured me in a soft voice not to be afraid and suggested we wait to see how things unfolded.
