The two people eating clearly saw nothing wrong with their actions; wasting food was shameful! "Hey, where do you think they're going?" Liu Ru Yan asked, happily munching on her meal as she spotted Bai Juan, Zhang Baofeng, and Tian Luo rushing out of the company. The three of them looked hurried, clutching their laptops and moving with urgency. It was after work; where could they possibly be heading? "Who knows? Anyway, we’re off work. They look like they’re going to put in some overtime. How pitiful!" Lan Ruo Yi glanced at the trio, still thinking about that man who had seemed to have the eyes of a predator.
"I just feel something's off. Let’s go back and check it out later. I have this uneasy feeling that something's going to happen," Lan Ruo Yi said, placing a hand over her heart. Liu Ru Yan noticed that Lan Ruo Yi wasn’t joking around and realized the situation might be serious. She nodded in agreement with Lan Ruo Yi’s idea. The two linked arms as they exited the hotel, mumbling, "Let’s hurry up; my pants feel a bit tight and I want to loosen them!" Liu Ru Yan had overeaten; she hadn’t felt it before while eating but now that she was full, her pants felt much smaller. The waistband was too tight! She hadn’t noticed it when she bought them! Without giving Lan Ruo Yi a chance to respond, she pulled her along toward the company.
Inside the car, Liu Yuchuan observed Mo Daowan's expression and confirmed he wasn’t unhappy, which eased his mind. He also thought that Lan Ruo Yi was quite capable; she was on par with that little girl. "Follow them!" Liu Yuchuan's voice rang out in the car. Even though he had just enjoyed a feast, it didn’t prevent him from knowing what they were up to.
At that moment, Mo Daowan’s gaze wasn’t on his cousin but rather on the lively girl, Liu Ru Yan. His eyes darkened as he focused intently on her. "Where has Liu Zong’s niece been all this time?" Liu Yuchuan didn’t understand why Mo Daowan asked this but felt obliged to respond since he was both a partner and the older brother of his niece's friend. "That little girl used to follow me around all the time; she grew up right here in the city. Haha, I raised her!" Liu Yuchuan spoke proudly, genuinely pleased that he had taken good care of his niece without causing his brother and sister-in-law any worry—except for Yi Yi, who had forgotten due to family matters.
"That’s great; it’s good to be alive," Mo Daowan said meaningfully, leaving Liu Yuchuan puzzled but not inclined to ask further.
Liu Ru Yan hurriedly pulled Lan Ruo Yi toward the company entrance and found it dimly lit inside. Lan Ruo Yi hesitated at the sight but decided to push through for her own curiosity. Just as they were about to enter, Wang Liling rushed out in a panic. Liu Ru Yan instinctively grabbed Lan Ruo Yi and pulled her aside.
"What are we hiding for?" Liu Ru Yan suddenly realized how ridiculous they looked trying to conceal themselves and almost stepped out but was stopped by Lan Ruo Yi.
"Don’t move! Look at her feet!" Lan Ruo Yi held Liu Ru Yan back as her pupils dilated in shock at what she saw on Wang Liling's feet.
"What is that???" Liu Ru Yan gasped in disbelief. Was that blood? "Did she kill someone? Isn’t that illegal? Aren't we supposed to be living in a lawful society?" She double-checked to confirm she wasn’t mistaken and kept asking Lan Ruo Yi while secretly pulling out her phone to verify that they indeed lived in a lawful society.
"Calm down; it might not be blood," Lan Ruo Yi reassured her, believing it couldn’t possibly be blood and that Wang Liling wasn’t bold enough for such actions.
"She’s gone; let’s go take a look." With newfound courage, Lan Ruo Yi tugged at Liu Ru Yan as they prepared to head into the company. Liu Ru Yan was tense but ready; if there was real danger, she would protect Lan Ruo Yi no matter what.
As they stepped into the company together, Liu Ru Yan clutched Lan Ruo Yi's arm tightly while cautiously searching for a light switch when suddenly they heard footsteps behind them—thud thud thud.
They froze and turned towards the source of the sound with an instinctive sense of dread. Liu Ru Yan felt an innate fear of such things and took deep breaths while Lan Ruo Yi’s eyes narrowed in apprehension. When the footsteps stopped, a bright light flashed before them; instinctively, both girls shut their eyes.
"You guys haven’t left yet?" It was Li Meng's voice. Liu Ru Yan sighed in relief while Lan Ruo Yi remained alert, watching Li Meng closely.
"Li Meng! You scared me! Why didn’t you turn on the lights before asking?" Liu Ru Yan exclaimed without thinking much; hearing a familiar voice calmed her down.
Li Meng squinted at Liu Ru Yan without answering directly but instead asked another question: "Are you two back here for work?"
Liu Ru Yan found it strange and opened her mouth to respond when Lan Ruo Yi pinched her from behind. Startled by the sudden pain, she frowned and let out a sound just as Lan Ruo Yi covered her mouth.
"Sorry about that, Li Meng! We forgot our notebooks and just remembered after eating! We’ll grab them and leave right away! Why are you still here?" Lan Ruo Yi spoke as if genuinely regretful; it was unclear whether Li Meng believed her or not, but Liu Ru Yan almost did.
"Then hurry up and get going; I’ll turn off the lights once you leave," Li Meng replied without probing further into whether Lan Ruo Yi’s story was true or not—she didn’t really care.
"Okay! Thanks for your hard work! By the way, did you finish talking with that customer?" Lan Ruo Yi casually asked about the man from earlier.
Li Meng nodded slightly, wanting them to leave quickly as she felt somewhat annoyed by their presence.
Lan Ruo Yi pulled Liu Ru Yan along with their notebooks without looking back as they exited. Li Meng watched their retreating figures with narrowed eyes before turning away herself. Meanwhile, as soon as they left the office, Lan Ruo Yi felt her back drenched in sweat; if she hadn’t been mistaken earlier, there had been someone in Li Meng's office when she claimed that man had left.
"What's strange? What happened?" Liu Ru Yan thought this wasn’t a good place for conversation but still asked in her mind.
Lan Ruo Yi decided not to hide anything from Liu Ru Yan and exhaled softly. "There was someone in Li Meng's office!" Her tone left no room for doubt, leaving Liu Ru Yan stunned. She hadn’t observed as closely as Lan Ruo Yi but couldn’t believe there could have been anyone there at all!
"I’m being serious—I really didn’t see anyone! It’s not that I wasn’t paying attention; I just didn’t see anyone! Do you understand???" Liu Ru Yan explained herself passionately; she had glanced at Li Meng's office too but truly hadn’t seen any sign of life there—how could there be someone?
"I saw our desks shift slightly; something must have happened!"
