Ye Ming and Zhan Ruoyang gave Wu Rong a thumbs up. Truly, Brother Rong was exceptional; if he was going to show off his affection, he did it wholeheartedly. All the single folks could only watch in envy.
Rao Jie felt a surge of anger at being discussed so openly about such a private matter. She shot an embarrassed glare at Wu Rong, who only seemed to swell with pride.
Meanwhile, a girl who had feelings for Rao Jie felt a pang of jealousy. Why was it that things had progressed so quickly for them? Why had she fallen behind? She couldn't help but think that she was more attractive than this girl, so why did Wu Rong like her instead? The girl unconsciously felt the urge to compare herself against Rao Jie.
"What does Rao Jie do? Is she also from Yun Cheng?"
Though everyone knew Rao Jie was young, they didn't think she was still a student. After all, they believed that in serious relationships, one would usually seek someone already working in society; students were too young and unstable.
"Is Rao Jie studying mathematics too? Did you meet because you spent so much time together?" someone curiously asked.
Rao Jie thought for a moment and, for some reason, blurted out, "I’m currently working at a Dessert Shop, mainly responsible for making pastries."
The surrounding crowd fell silent instantly.
Yet, Rao Jie felt an unexpected calm wash over her. It was as if she were testing something, experiencing something profound. And indeed, the answer was just as she had anticipated. However, it only served to ignite certain beliefs within her.
Wu Rong showed no reaction to her words. When asked about Rao Jie's current job, she confirmed that she was indeed working as a Pastry Chef, though not officially yet.
After speaking, Rao Jie could clearly feel the change in the gazes around her; however, everyone still tried their best to lighten the mood with laughter to ease the awkwardness.
The girl who had first asked the question spoke with an odd tone, "That's quite impressive; it seems like you two meeting is fate."
"Hey, Rao Jie, you seem really young. How old are you?" one of the girls asked.
Rao Jie answered sweetly, "I’ll be twenty-two soon."
"You started working so early," someone remarked.
At this moment, a consensus began to form among some regarding Rao Jie. Even Ye Ming and Zhan Ruoyang could sense that everyone’s interest in Rao Jie had waned, their demeanor and speech taking on a somewhat condescending air.
They were all students from the best high school in Yun Cheng, most of whom had been accepted into prestigious universities and now held respectable jobs. It was fair to say that those attending the reunion were all elites; after all, those who were struggling in life typically wouldn’t bother showing up.
The so-called class reunion served not only to reconnect, reminisce about the past, and build networks but also played a significant role as a grand stage for boasting and comparison. It was akin to ranking students based on their high school grades, determining who stood at the top and who fell behind. Was the former top student still at the top? Did the once-last student fail to make a comeback?
While their education had taught them how to treat people from various professions with respect, deep down, they still looked down on those with lower educational backgrounds who worked in small shops relying solely on their skills. In other words, even if someone were to introduce a potential partner, they would never consider introducing someone of that caliber; it was a form of disdain.
However, if they happened to meet such a person themselves and found them attractive, that was another story altogether. To them, Rao Jie was merely a young woman working part-time, who dressed well enough to attract customers at her shop, hoping to snag a wealthy partner without relying on her own efforts—seeking material fulfillment through her boyfriend instead.
