"Am I losing again?" Feng Xunyu mumbled, pouting in dissatisfaction.
Murong Sixuan slightly turned her neck and replied with an indifferent expression, "Now you owe me eleven tubes of Mentos and twenty-three boxes of Tic Tac. Shall we continue?"
Feng Xunyu let out a soft huff, her cherry-like lips pouting slightly as she said, "I know you're smart, much smarter than me. I can accept losing to you in chess, international chess, Go, checkers, and Dou Shou Qi, but why do I lose at Ludo too? Do I even lack luck compared to you?"
Sixuan casually reached into the transparent plastic bag placed beside the bed, quickly grabbed a handful of fruit gummies, and tossed them into her mouth. Chewing exaggeratedly, she mumbled, "In Ludo, luck plays a minimal role; it's more about calculation. You have to consider all possibilities with each move before deciding which piece to advance."
Feng Xunyu lightly scoffed and retorted disdainfully, "Do you really have to think so much while playing Ludo? You're just talking nonsense."
Suddenly inspired, she adapted the lyrics of "Heart Too Soft," singing softly, "Is it tiring to play like this? Though you get candies as comfort."
Upon hearing this, Sixuan's lips curled up slightly, and a hint of a smile broke through her usually frosty demeanor.
Just as Feng Xunyu was enjoying the conversation with Sixuan, a clear ringtone abruptly shattered the cheerful atmosphere.
She furrowed her brows slightly and hurriedly pulled her phone from her pocket. Glancing at the screen, her face turned pale in an instant, and she fell silent. After hesitating for several seconds, she finally answered the call softly, "Dad?"
For the next few moments, Feng Xunyu remained silent, quietly listening to her father's voice on the other end. Her frown deepened with each passing second as her fingers instinctively tightened around the phone.
After more than ten seconds, she slowly spoke up, "I understand. I'll come back as soon as possible. Let's discuss everything else when I return. That's it for now."
After hanging up the phone, Feng Xunyu slowly turned to look at Sixuan, who was staring back at her with a blank expression, silently observing her.
The two exchanged glances for a few seconds before Feng Xunyu suddenly took a deep breath, her eyes filled with sorrow as she said softly, "It was my dad calling. He said my mom is seriously ill, and the situation is critical. He wants me to come home to see her right away."
"Where is your home?" Sixuan asked with concern.
Although Murong Sixuan and Feng Xunyu lived in the same rented room, they had only known each other for about ten days and knew very little about each other's families and backgrounds.
"It's a bit far," Feng Xunyu's voice trembled slightly. "It's in HZ City. It takes over an hour to fly there from here."
"I've been to HZ City; the West Lake there is quite beautiful," Sixuan replied, quickly changing the subject. "When are you leaving?"
"I'll be leaving soon," Feng Xunyu sighed helplessly, her tone heavy with sadness. "From the way my dad spoke, it seems my mom's condition is very serious. I'm afraid if I delay, I might not even get to see her one last time."
Before Sixuan could respond, she continued, "Murong Sixuan, do you know? My mom is really pitiful. I used to have a twin sister and a younger brother who is six years younger than me. But two years ago, my brother jumped off a building and committed suicide, and shortly after that, my twin sister was murdered. The killer has still not been found. My mom lost two beloved children in one night; she has been tormented ever since and has fallen ill..."
Feng Xunyu's words instantly captured Sixuan's full attention. He frowned slightly, his voice laced with disbelief. "Your brother committed suicide? Your sister was murdered? The killer is still at large?"
"Yes," Feng Xunyu nodded gently, tears welling up in her eyes as she recalled those tragic memories.
As for Sixuan, his curiosity was thoroughly piqued. After just a moment of thought, he resolutely stated, "I will go back with you."
