The roar of zombies echoed through the ruins, like whispers from the Grim Reaper.
Zhao Mengmeng and I had just caught our breath when hurried footsteps sounded behind us.
Turning around, we saw a large group of zombies surging toward us, their numbers multiplied several times over!
"What the hell? Did these guys hold a meeting? How did so many suddenly appear?"
I swallowed hard, a chill running down my spine.
I reached into my pocket, only to find my last pair of Stinky Socks—my lifeline!
"Brother Haotian, what do we do?" Zhao Mengmeng clutched my shirt, her face pale.
"What else can we do? Run!" I grabbed her and took off.
But those zombies were incredibly fast, quickly closing the distance between us.
As the nearest zombie reached out with its claw, I gritted my teeth and pulled out the Socks, hurling them at it!
Sure enough, the creatures shrieked and recoiled, but this time they didn’t scatter completely; instead, they quickly adjusted their course and pressed closer!
"This isn’t right! These zombies seem to be getting smarter..." My heart raced as cold sweat poured down my back.
To make matters worse, after throwing the Socks, I was completely out of options!
"I'm done for; there's really no way out this time..." I chuckled bitterly to myself.
At that moment, a familiar voice came from beside me, "Jiang Haotian, where's your 'secret weapon'?"
It was Si Tu Xiangnan, dressed in high-quality protective gear, stepping out from behind the rubble with a calm expression on his face.
"Secret weapon my ass! I've run out of Socks in my bag!" I shouted angrily. "What about you? Do you have a plan?"
Si Tu Xiangnan adjusted his glasses, a slight smile playing at the corners of his mouth. "That's why your tactics are completely unreliable."
No sooner had he finished speaking than the zombies lunged at us again!
"Stop talking nonsense! If we're going to die, let's die together!" I yelled as I positioned myself in front of Zhao Mengmeng, only to hear a calm female voice interject, "Everyone, get back!"
A figure burst forth from the debris, wielding a makeshift spray canister and spraying it directly at the zombies.
The zombies paused upon smelling the spray, but it wasn't long before they resumed their attack, charging at us once more!
"Jiang Jie?" I exclaimed in surprise as I looked at her—how did this calm and rational chemistry teacher end up here?
Jiang Jie frowned and said, "This is an odorant I've formulated from my chemistry experiments, but clearly, its effectiveness isn't strong enough."
"Are you kidding? Can this half-baked concoction really save us?" Si Tu Xiangnan scoffed.
Jiang Jie shot him a glare. "At least it's better than you just standing there and pointing fingers."
As the zombies drew closer, I anxiously stomped my feet and exclaimed, "Stop making noise! What do we do now?"
Jiang Jie pondered for a moment before saying, "If we can find your original Socks sample, we might be able to extract more effective components."
"Original sample?" I was taken aback for a moment, then recalled the pair of worn-out Socks I had been using for three whole years—yes, those!
But the problem was, that pair of Socks had long been stuffed away in the storage locker of the locker room at the stadium, and there was no way to go back and retrieve them now!
"No way! That thing is long gone!" I shrugged helplessly.
Jiang Jie sighed, "Then we'll have to think of another way."
But where was the time to think of another way?
The zombies were already upon us; I could even smell their putrid stench!
"Brother Haotian..." Zhao Mengmeng trembled as she grasped my hand, her voice filled with fear. "Are we going to die?"
A sharp pain pierced my heart as I looked at her innocent little face, suddenly overwhelmed by a fierce unwillingness.
No! I absolutely cannot give up like this!
In that critical moment, a spark of inspiration flashed in my mind—wait, even though I didn't have that pair of Socks on me, there was still another possibility...
To save money, I used to wear the same pair of Socks while playing football; those Sweat had long seeped into the soles of my shoes. Perhaps they could still come in handy!
Thinking of this, I immediately took off my sneakers and hurled them forcefully at the zombies.
The intense stench from the soles quickly filled the air, and the zombies indeed recoiled, covering their faces and letting out pained cries. A few even collapsed to the ground, too frightened to approach any closer!
“Hahaha! It worked!” I exclaimed, nearly jumping with excitement. “My shoes are useful after all!”
Si Tu Xiangnan and Jiang Jie were both stunned, clearly not expecting such a method to be effective.
Seizing the opportunity, we quickly retreated to a relatively safe area.
As we caught our breath, Si Tu Xiangnan finally spoke up, “Jiang Haotian, I have to admit, you do have some skills.”
He handed me a few bottles of water and some compressed biscuits, saying, “Consider this my apology. I hope we can collaborate in the future.”
Seeing his change in attitude, I couldn't help but snort. “Collaboration is fine, but don’t question my abilities again!”
Jiang Jie adjusted her glasses and said in a calm yet thoughtful tone, “Your socks seem to contain some special components that strongly irritate the zombies. We need to study this further.”
Upon hearing her words, an inexplicable sense of hope rose within me—perhaps these Stinky Socks could truly be the key to saving the world?
However, just as we began to relax slightly, a low and eerie growl echoed from afar…
