The howling outside gradually faded, but the atmosphere inside the gym grew even more tense.
I tightly gripped the bottle in my hand, containing the "Miracle Liquid" extracted from my Socks by Jiang Jie. Although it had saved our lives moments ago, its effects were clearly not lasting.
"Brother Haotian..." Zhao Mengmeng tugged at my sleeve, her small face filled with worry. "Are we really okay?"
I forced a smile. "Of course, Brother Haotian is invincible."
Even as I said this, I knew deep down that this "invincibility" wouldn't last long.
Worse still, General Hu's sinister face now loomed in the center of the gym. He stood among a group of survivors, his eyes glinting with a restless light.
"Everyone!" His voice was loud and inciting. "I must say, we can no longer rely on certain people's 'Miracle Socks'!"
As soon as he spoke, the survivors began to murmur among themselves.
Some frowned, some nodded, and many wore expressions of uncertainty.
"What do you mean?" I stepped forward, glaring at General Hu. "Just say what you want to say."
General Hu sneered. "Jiang Haotian, do you really think you can earn everyone's trust with just two Stinky Socks? Don't forget, you're just a third-rate Football Player!"
His words struck me like a knife to the chest.
The survivors started whispering; some even cast doubtful glances my way.
"What do you mean by that?" Jiang Jie pushed up her glasses and coldly looked at General Hu. "If it weren't for Hao Tian, we would have died at the hands of those zombies long ago."
"Is that so?" General Hu spread his hands in a feigned innocent manner. "But who knows if he's hiding something? For example, why does he always carry these 'strange' things?"
His gaze swept over my Socks and the bottle, and immediately the survivors began to whisper among themselves.
"Stop slandering him!" Zhao Mengmeng stomped her foot in anger, her face flushed. "Brother Haotian would never harm us!"
General Hu scoffed lightly. "Little girl, what do you know? In this apocalypse, everyone has their secrets. Jiang Haotian, do you dare to tell everyone how many more things you’re hiding?"
I clenched my fists, nearly ready to charge at him, but reason told me that would only make things worse.
At that moment, a deep and authoritative voice interrupted, "Enough!"
Li Fengzhu stepped out from the crowd, his tall figure instantly commanding the scene.
" Vice Chairman Hu, this is the apocalypse, not a time for meetings and bickering." His gaze swept over General Hu like a knife. "If you have evidence, present it; if not, keep your mouth shut."
General Hu paused for a moment, but quickly regained his hypocritical smile. " Captain Li, I’m just reminding everyone to stay vigilant. After all, we cannot place our fate in one person's 'miracle.'"
Li Fengzhu ignored him and turned to me. "Jiang Haotian, do you have anything to say?"
All eyes were on me, and I could feel their unease and skepticism.
Taking a deep breath, I forced myself to calm down. "I don’t have a hundred percent answer, but at least everything I’ve done so far has been to ensure everyone’s survival."
"Empty words," General Hu sneered. "Who knows if you have ulterior motives?"
His tone was filled with provocation, making one want to tear his mouth apart.
Just then, a timid voice broke the deadlock. "But... but I saw him..."
Zhao Mengmeng stepped forward, her small hands tightly clutching her clothes, her voice trembling violently. "I saw Uncle Hu hiding a lot of food..."
At her words, the crowd erupted in an uproar!
General Hu's face changed dramatically as he glared at Zhao Mengmeng with eyes so fierce they seemed ready to devour her. "You little girl! Don’t speak nonsense!"
Zhao Mengmeng flinched in fear but mustered the courage to continue. "It’s true! Behind the gym in the Storage Room, I saw him hiding many cans and water… and he locked the door…"
"Shut up!" General Hu roared, trying to mask his panic, but the cold sweat beading on his forehead betrayed him.
"Then let’s go take a look," Li Fengzhu said in a low voice. He waved for Si Tu Xiangnan to follow him as they headed straight for the Storage Room.
A few minutes later, they returned, each person carrying several boxes of canned goods and bottled water—items that clearly weren’t something ordinary survivors could easily obtain.
The survivors began to stir restlessly, angrily accusing General Hu, with some even shouting to throw him out!
"This is just a misunderstanding!" General Hu tried to argue, but his voice was drowned out by the fury of the crowd.
He glanced anxiously at Li Fengzhu, only to find that the other party had no intention of speaking up for him, merely coldly observing everything.
"Enough!" My voice cut through the chaos, "This is not the time for infighting! There are zombies outside, and we must unite to survive!"
My words brought a momentary calm to the scene, but the expressions on everyone's faces remained complex and conflicted.
Just then, a low and eerie roar echoed from outside the gymnasium!
My heart sank—those creatures were back, and there seemed to be even more of them than before!
"Everyone! Prepare for battle!" Li Fengzhu ordered decisively. He led the security team to quickly set up defenses while I tightened my grip on the bottle in my hand, ready to rush out at any moment.
However, at that critical moment, I suddenly felt a chill creeping up my back...
As I turned around, I saw General Hu staring at me with an intensely resentful gaze. The corner of his mouth curled slightly, as if he were concocting some sinister plot...
**Bang!**
A loud crash interrupted my thoughts as the door was smashed open, and a horde of zombies surged in!
The air was thick with the stench of decay and despair, and the battle was about to begin here!
