When I woke up, I found myself lying in the makeshift medical room of the gym.
"Brother Haotian, you're awake!" Zhao Mengmeng rushed to my bedside, her eyes red as if she had been crying.
"I'm fine." I struggled to sit up, feeling a bit dizzy.
"You were unconscious for an entire day," Jiang Jie said from the side, holding a notebook. "We analyzed your sweat samples and made some new discoveries."
I rubbed my temples. "What discoveries?"
"Your sweat contains a special Active Enzyme," Jiang Jie flipped through the notebook. "This enzyme can destroy the cellular structure of zombies, causing them to die quickly."
Active Enzyme?
A thought struck me—could this be the reason my sweat restrained zombies?
"But the concentration of this enzyme is very low," Jiang Jie continued. "And it loses its activity quickly outside the body."
"So, what you're saying is," Si Tu Xiangnan interjected, "we need to find a way to increase the concentration and stability of this enzyme."
I nodded. "Exactly."
"I already have some preliminary ideas," Jiang Jie closed the notebook. "We can use the lab equipment to extract and concentrate the Active Enzyme from your sweat."
"And then?" I pressed for more details.
"Then we can turn the concentrated enzyme into a special agent," Jiang Jie explained. "This agent can be applied to weapons or made into bullets to combat zombies."
"Great idea!" I exclaimed, slapping my thigh in excitement. "Let's do it!"
Si Tu Xiangnan frowned. "But we need a large amount of sweat samples; you alone probably..."
"I can help!" Zhao Mengmeng raised her little hand. "I can help Brother Haotian collect Sweat!"
I patted her head. "Thank you, Mengmeng."
"And I can help too," Jiang Jie chimed in. "I can be responsible for developing the potions."
"But what about funding and equipment?" Si Tu Xiangnan asked.
"I'll take care of that," I replied, looking at him. "There should still be some supplies in the gym; we can use those for now."
"Alright," Si Tu Xiangnan nodded. "I'll arrange for people to gather them."
In the following days, we began the intense work of collecting Sweat and developing potions.
I engaged in a lot of physical activity each day to expel as much Sweat as possible.
Zhao Mengmeng carefully collected my Sweat with various containers, afraid to waste even a drop.
Jiang Jie was busy in the lab, conducting experiments over and over again, trying to find the best extraction and concentration methods.
Si Tu Xiangnan coordinated the supplies and personnel, ensuring our plan proceeded smoothly.
Although the process was arduous, each of us was filled with hope.
We knew we were fighting for the future of humanity.
However, things did not go as smoothly as we had imagined.
Jiang Jie faced repeated failures in her experiments, and the extraction rate of Active Enzyme remained consistently low.
My body was starting to give in, and I felt exhausted every day.
"This can't go on," Jiang Jie said, looking at my haggard appearance with concern. "Your health will deteriorate."
"I'm fine," I gritted my teeth. "I can still hold on."
"But..." Jiang Jie wanted to say more, but I interrupted her.
"There are no 'buts,'" I said firmly. "We must succeed, for all the survivors and for myself."
I looked up at the window, where the sky was a dull gray, and endless ruins stretched out before me.
I knew we had no way out.
At that moment, Zhao Mengmeng suddenly burst into the laboratory, holding a peculiar plant in her hands.
"Brother Haotian, look!" she exclaimed excitedly. "I found this in the flowerbed of the gym!"
The plant was entirely green and emitted a faint, pleasant fragrance.
"What is this?" I asked, puzzled.
"I don't know," Zhao Mengmeng shook her head. "But I feel it's special."
Jiang Jie took the plant and examined it closely, her eyes lighting up. "Could this... could this be the legendary Ninglu Grass?"
"Ninglu Grass?" both Si Tu Xiangnan and I asked in unison.
"That's right," Jiang Jie said excitedly. "Ninglu Grass is an extremely rare plant that is said to enhance the activity of biological enzymes and extend their preservation time!"
I felt a surge of joy. "Great! This is exactly what we need!"
Jiang Jie immediately began experimenting with Ninglu Grass, and the results were astonishing.
The extract from Ninglu Grass significantly increased the concentration and stability of the Active Enzyme!
We had finally found the key to restraining the zombies!
Next, we worked overtime to mix Sweat, Active Enzyme, and the extract of Ninglu Grass together, creating a special potion.
We applied the potion to our weapons and crafted special bullets to load into our modified firearms.
We called it the "Sweat Weapon."
Holding the gleaming Sweat Bullet in my hand, I was filled with hope.
I knew we were about to face the final battle.
And I would use my own Sweat to wash away the shame of the past and protect the future of humanity.
The roars of zombies outside the gym grew closer, and the great battle was about to begin.
