Before I could finish my sentence, I stiffly turned my head and saw Liu Wenxing flipping through the pile of flower seedlings.
"Hehe... what a surprise to see you here. Why did you come so suddenly?" I spoke with a hint of eagerness, hoping to lighten the mood, but he seemed indifferent. "I wanted to do this too. What else would I be doing?"
Seeing his eager expression, I handed him the small shovel in my hand. "Just dig the holes; I've already taken care of everything else."
"Okay."
As he rolled up his sleeves, revealing his delicate and fair wrists, I found that today’s sun wasn’t as blinding as before. His long fingers held the small shovel as he dug one hole after another. I snapped back to reality and followed behind him, placing the seedlings into the holes.
Together, we planted a patch of Orchid, Chrysanthemum, Rosa, and even a Yew tree. This tree was something I specifically had brought back; I had long been fond of the line, "Delicate dice resting on red beans, do you know of the longing that pierces to the bone?"
As we finished planting, the sky began to darken, signaling dinner time. Aunt Wang's voice called out, "Miss, Son-in-law, if you don’t come for dinner soon, the food will get cold and won't taste good."
"We're coming." I tugged at his sleeve to wash our hands and change clothes.
Noticing how reluctant he was to put down the small shovel, I switched tactics and took his hand instead, placing the shovel in a corner against the wall. "Husband, once this batch grows up, you can pick out any flowers you like for us to plant next."
"Really? Will you join me? Don’t you think it’s a hassle?" He looked at me with a stern expression that belied his anticipation and joy. Internally, I couldn’t help but tease him for being so contradictory—clearly enjoying it yet maintaining a cold demeanor.
I quickly put on a gentle smile and gazed at him with affectionate eyes. "Really, we’ll plant together; it won’t be a hassle at all."
As I washed his hands while speaking, I added, "As long as you like it, it’s not a hassle."
After dinner, Liu Wenxing unexpectedly invited me to have tea together.
"Can you tell me about your past?" Xu Jin attempted to initiate a conversation.
He paused for a moment with an inscrutable expression. "There’s not much to say; I've forgotten many things. Back in school, I enjoyed painting but eventually neglected it."
"What about now? Do you still like painting?" Xu Jin asked curiously.
"Now?" Liu Wenxing looked up at the starry sky and then fixed his gaze on me. "Now, I want to draw you."
Ah, how could he maintain that expressionless handsome face while seriously flirting with me? I pinched my thigh hard to suppress the heat rising to my face and blurted out, "Then draw me tomorrow."
"Okay." I was momentarily captivated by the faint smile at the corner of his mouth.
Thus, every morning, I spent time with him in the study. Sometimes I ground ink for him, other times I read stories. His bookshelf not only held books but also a few portraits. Time passed like this for more than half a month.
Our relationship evolved from his initial indifference to occasionally holding hands. One day, I suddenly received an invitation from Li Wan'er and Zhao Mengjiao. They were friends of the original owner and had been spending time with Liu Wenxing during this period; I had almost forgotten about them.
Previously, the original owner had often relied on these two to scold and reprimand Liu Wenxing. What were they up to this time? It didn’t matter; after all, I wasn’t the original owner. This relationship was theirs to navigate. I was curious about what they wanted.
At the teahouse, Li Wan'er and Zhao Mengjiao had been waiting for a while. They wore extravagant outfits, their faces adorned with insincere smiles, yet their eyes betrayed a hint of cunning.
