Seeing the calculating glances from the two of them, I approached without changing my expression.
" Jin'er, you finally made it," Li Wan'er said as she stood up and pretended to affectionately grasp my hand.
I gently pulled my hand away and replied coolly, "Wan'er, Mengjiao, I'm here today to clarify a few things with you."
Zhao Mengjiao raised an eyebrow slightly, "What could be so serious?"
I glanced around to ensure no one was listening before slowly speaking, "It's about Wen Xing. I don't want either of you to have any inappropriate thoughts."
Li Wan'er's smile instantly froze, her voice turning sharp. "Inappropriate thoughts? Jin'er, what do you mean? Haven't we always...?"
"Always what?" I interrupted her, a hint of coldness in my tone. "Always waiting for me to mistreat Wen Xing so you could toy with him?"
"If it weren't for the two of you constantly stirring things up, would I have said those things?"
Zhao Mengjiao's expression changed. "Xu Jin, what do you mean by that? We are your friends; how could you think that of us?"
I stood up and met her gaze directly. "Friends?"
"Is your idea of friendship to manipulate me into doing reckless things while secretly coveting my husband?"
Li Wan'er also stood up, her voice laced with mockery. "Who do you think you are? Just a discarded waste from your family. Do you really think Liu Wenxing would genuinely like you?"
I scoffed coldly. "Who I am doesn't require your judgment. As for Wen Xing, he is my husband, not a toy for you to play with."
Zhao Mengjiao's face darkened as she snorted disdainfully. "Do you think saying that will scare us?"
"I don't need you to be afraid of me; just remember that from today onward, we are no longer friends. My husband is under my protection, and no one will bully him."
Once those words left my mouth, I felt a wave of relief wash over me; indeed, being assertive felt good.
Li Wan'er and Zhao Mengjiao exchanged glances before storming off with their respective maids, their faces dark with anger.
When I returned to Zhuangzi, the sky had already darkened.
Thinking about whether Liu Wenxing had eaten, I decided to go ask him. I noticed there were no lights in the house, so I gently knocked on the door. There was no response, which likely meant he had fallen asleep.
As I turned to leave, I heard footsteps from within. By the window, the low table appeared even lonelier in the darkness. Liu Wenxing, surrounded by a chill, involuntarily recalled the words he had heard during the day.
" Butler Wang, why is the young lady going out alone without bringing her son-in-law?" a young servant asked curiously as he cleaned alongside the butler.
"The young lady is meeting Miss Zhao and Li Family Young Lady today; she probably doesn't want her son-in-law to hear anything unpleasant," the butler replied after a moment of hesitation.
The young servant leaned closer to the butler with a mysterious expression. "So it's those two young ladies? They are not to be underestimated."
"It's probably for the best that she didn't go. I heard them speaking ill of her son-in-law in front of her before, suggesting that she should give him to them. Those two young ladies are always up to no good. The young lady hasn't been hanging out with them lately and has improved quite a bit; her relationship with her son-in-law has also gotten better. I hope after meeting them today, she doesn't revert back to her old self."
"Oh my! My heavens! Spit, spit, spit! What a jinx! It won't happen; the young lady will definitely not go back to how she was before."
