Scar Monkey opened the file folder on the desk and took out two photographs. The subject of the photos was the same person, a peculiar teammate from Chi Yun Mountain—Wuchang Ghost.
Below the photographs was Wuchang Ghost's information. Li Zhiqiang, from Qilihe Village in Zhe County, X City, was orphaned at a young age and raised by his uncle in a poor household. Despite his difficult upbringing, he excelled academically and three years ago gained admission to Yicheng University University’s law program. He nearly dropped out due to financial struggles but was able to continue his studies thanks to a national assistance program for impoverished college students.
Two years ago, a tragic massacre occurred in Qilihe Village, resulting in the brutal murder of Li Zhiqiang's uncle and aunt. To this day, the perpetrator has not been caught, making it a sensational unsolved case.
At that time, Li Zhiqiang was a sophomore at Yicheng University and was also investigated. However, he was cleared of suspicion due to a strong alibi provided by his dormitory classmates.
As everyone gathered around to examine the photographs and information, Scar Monkey asked, “Has anyone noticed any discrepancies?”
Feng Wuhen was the first to speak up. “Discrepancy one: his family is poor and he almost couldn’t pay his tuition. How could he afford such expensive top-tier outdoor gear?”
Xiao Huihui added, “Discrepancy two: Li Zhiqiang was raised by his uncle. Logically, he should be grateful. Why then is he listed as a suspect in the massacre case and subjected to investigation?”
Ming Ming Liang chimed in, “You’ve covered all the discrepancies. I just want to emphasize that last week during our crossing at Chi Yun Mountain, I indeed saw a white shadow. I felt like someone was following me even when I got on the train.”
Miao Lang hadn’t looked at the information; he kept staring at the two photographs. After a moment of examining them closely, he said, “Typically, only one photo is enough for police identification of a suspect. Why are there two?”
In both photographs were familiar faces of their teammate Wuchang Ghost. In the first image, he had a middle-part hairstyle and wore a white tracksuit; though not smiling, his youthful innocence was evident. In the second image, his hair was cut short into a buzz cut, and he wore a plain black T-shirt; his eyes bore a much more somber expression.
Scar Monkey explained, “These two photos were taken during Li Zhiqiang’s freshman and junior years.”
Although university life can strip away the naivety of youth, these two photographs distinctly portrayed two different individuals wearing the same skin.
Everyone looked at the two photos of Wuchang Ghost and Li Zhiqiang, momentarily falling into silence.
Scar Monkey said, "I'll answer your questions one by one."
Miao Lang's question was: Why are there two photos of the suspect?
Feng Wuhen asked: How could someone from a poor family afford expensive outdoor gear?
Xiao Huihui wondered: Since he was an orphan raised by his uncle, how could he be listed as a suspect in a family massacre case?
Ming Ming Liang questioned: Who was the white shadow that followed them all the way?
Scar Monkey placed the two photos side by side and said, "The subjects of these two photos are actually two different people; the impoverished Li Zhiqiang and the extravagant Wuchang Ghost are also two individuals.
The orphan raised by his uncle and the sophomore student Li Zhiqiang, who has an alibi at school, are indeed two separate people.
The Wuchang Ghost who entered the mountains with us and the Wuchang Ghost who left with us are likewise two different individuals!"
There were six people who entered the mountains together, and six who came out. So where did an extra person come from?
Scar Monkey continued, "Do you all remember when we were traversing the dense forest, Wuchang Ghost broke away from us and walked ahead?"
It was at that moment, as Wuchang Ghost passed by Scar Monkey, that he noticed a Cinnabar birthmark on the palm of Wuchang Ghost's left hand as he brushed aside the branches.
