Half a year later.
Early in the morning, while the sun was still lingering halfway up the mountain, Wei Yushan was already awake.
After washing up and having breakfast, she stood at the door with the only servant in the house, holding hands and exchanging tearful goodbyes.
“Xiao Zhenglan, just wait! Once I capture Outlaw Xing Qin, we will be able to escape this life of poverty!” Yushan promised earnestly, her face serious.
Xiao Zhenglan thought to himself: You can catch me only if it rains red all over the world.
“However, according to the information received, Outlaw Xing Qin is currently a thousand miles away in Mo Bei. That’s quite troublesome!”
Xiao Zhenglan silently repeated in his mind: No need to go a thousand miles; he’s right in front of you.
The master reluctantly shifted her gaze from the boy's exposed collar revealing a patch of fair skin and handed him a few pieces of silver. “This is some leftover silver from our family. Use it to get by for now. When I return victorious, I’ll take you out for meat buns.”
The morning light was faint, casting a thin layer of sunlight over the dilapidated house.
The slender boy, as fragile as bamboo leaves, returned half of the silver back to his master. “Master, take this for travel expenses. I only drink two bowls of porridge a day; I don’t need so much money.” Yet he thought to himself: Relying on you for sustenance, I’ve nearly starved several times already.
What a considerate child!
The master was touched, her eyes shimmering with tears as she gently stroked his small hand and carefully instructed him. “While I’m away, don’t accept anything from Aunt Chen next door, madam Li down the street, Aunt Zhang Si across the road, or Tower Master Ouyang from the brothel. They’ve been eyeing you for a long time; who knows what they might put in their food? Especially anything sent by the brothel owner—never take anything she offers! God knows how long she’s wanted to lure you into her place to be her star attraction…”
The Master rambled on endlessly, lamenting that having a Stunning Servant was exhausting. Every day, he had to keep secrets, fearing that this child might one day be taken away by bad people.
Xiao Zhenglan obediently nodded and urged, "Master, if we don't leave soon, we'll miss our appointment with the colleagues..."
It took two hours to say goodbye; that was enough.
The Master finally threw the patched-up bundle over his shoulder and stepped out of the house, turning back three times. "Well then, I'm off! Remember what I said: check the windows and doors before you sleep at night. Make sure they're secure against water, fire, and perverts! And also..."
The boy continued to urge him, "Master, we really are running out of time..." He thought to himself: If you keep talking, I might just kill you.
"Alright, alright, I'll finish this one last sentence before I go..."
As soon as he finished speaking, a loud bang echoed from the distant city tower. A burst of flames shot up into the air, the sound so loud and the fire so bright that it fully revealed the impatience of those waiting.
Yushan rubbed his nose and reluctantly let go of Little Servant's hand. He leaped into the air, landing on the roof of Tofu Beauty's house to use his lightness skill. "Make sure to remember what I said: watch out for perverts!"
Another lively morning had begun!
Xiao Zhenglan sighed as he gazed in the direction where his Master had disappeared, then gently closed the door.
In the shadow behind the door, the innocent expression on his face vanished in an instant. His eyes narrowed slightly, and his expression shifted between light and dark.
He stretched lazily in the soft morning light. "I’ve actually gotten used to this kind of life..."
He muttered to himself, bored as he flicked his sleeves and paced around the small courtyard a few times.
"How dull..." Qin Zhenglan leaped onto the roof with an eerie grace, his nimbleness indicating that his injuries had mostly healed.
He gazed in the direction where Yushan had vanished. "I should be on my way."
Looking back at the modest dwelling where he had stayed for half a year, a self-deprecating smile tugged at the corners of his mouth. He hadn’t expected to linger in one place for so long, leaving him feeling somewhat perplexed and inexplicably restless.
With a swift motion, Qin Zhenglan disappeared over the ridge of the roof.
