“Xinluo, come here and take a look!” Li Zimu said, touching the coffin lid beside the coffin nails. “Don’t you think these nail marks look a bit strange? One side is deeper than the other, and even this nail we took out only has one nail head…” He continued to examine the nail marks closely.
“One nail head?” He Xinluo asked, puzzled as she touched the already chipped nail marks. “Could it have been broken off by someone trying to steal the valuables?” Her eyes were filled with doubt.
“The wood used for the coffin lid is just ordinary willow, and it’s made quite thick, so the lid alone weighs nearly a hundred pounds. If someone were to pry it open, there wouldn’t be a single mark on it…” Li Zimu paused, suddenly feeling a tight grip on his clothes from behind. He turned to see He Xinluo’s face slightly pale. “Please don’t tell me there really is some ghostly power at work!” Her voice trembled with fear.
Li Zimu had initially suspected that the nails might not have been secured properly, but seeing He Xinluo's fearful expression and remembering that this was a rare moment for just the two of them, he couldn’t help but suppress a laugh and feign seriousness. “We can’t rule out that possibility!” A glint of mischief flashed in his eyes.
“Really? Could it be that Li Da Tou’s corpse actually walked over to the coffin by itself? That’s terrifying!” He Xinluo said, inching closer to Li Zimu involuntarily. “By the way, it does feel a bit chilly in here!” Her body trembled slightly, clearly spooked by the eerie atmosphere.
Li Zimu smiled without answering, grabbing her hand and leading her to the Spirit Coffin. “If you want to know if it’s really haunted, we can check the body and find out!” His tone carried a hint of encouragement.
As he casually lifted one of Li Da Tou’s hands from inside the coffin for a closer look, He Xinluo suddenly seemed energized. “Let me see!”
She raised Li Da Tou’s arm and gently rubbed it a couple of times before rolling up his sleeve. It was then that Li Zimu noticed numerous red spots scattered across his wrist.
He Xinluo examined closely while shaking her head, her face filled with confusion. “This is so strange! Li Da Tou’s body doesn’t have that stiffness typical of someone who has been dead for days; even the livor mortis looks like he just died recently…” Her voice was laced with deep perplexity as her eyes fixated on the corpse, seemingly searching for more clues.
Suddenly, a loud clap of thunder accompanied by blinding lightning echoed outside, causing a painful ringing in their ears. At that moment, Li Zimu felt a shadow flash past outside the door with incredible speed, almost like a ghost. Just as he tried to see who it was, the figure had already circled around behind him.
In an instant, he felt his entire body freeze up; a chill ran up his spine as he silently cursed his bad luck. He wanted to struggle, but it felt as if his body had been immobilized completely, beyond his control.
A barely audible sneer came from behind him—a cold and chilling laughter that sent shivers down their spines. In the next moment, both Li Zimu and He Xinluo were thrown into the coffin one after another. As they fell into the coffin, their bodies slammed hard against its walls, causing He Xinluo to let out a muffled groan from the pain.
As they widened their eyes, trying to see the figure, the coffin lid that had been lying flat on the ground suddenly slammed shut with a heavy thud. The sound of iron hammers striking coffin nails echoed above them, each strike resonating in their hearts and quickening their pulses.
Li Zimu forced himself to remain calm, deliberately ignoring the cold, stiff sensation beneath him. He shouted loudly towards the outside of the coffin, "Hey, who are you? What do you want?" His voice reverberated within the coffin, tinged with urgency and anger.
In response, there was a prolonged silence... as if the entire world had plunged into endless darkness and stillness.
"What should we do? If this goes on, we'll suffocate!" He Xinluo's voice grew increasingly despondent after calling out several times without a reply. Her tone trembled slightly, sounding especially helpless in the confined space.
Although Li Zimu couldn't move at all, he managed to smile and said, "If I had known he was going to lock us in this coffin together, I would have gladly supported him! Last time Boss An kissed you; this time I finally got my fair share! Opportunities for such close encounters are rare!" He tried to speak lightly, attempting to ease the tense atmosphere.
"Is this really the time for jokes?" He Xinluo rolled her eyes in the dark. Did he really not care about being trapped under that corpse? She thought to herself, feeling both exasperated and amused by Li Zimu's attitude.
Li Zimu fell silent for a moment before awkwardly saying, "If we really end up dying together in this coffin today, I would be glad it was me accompanying you here!" His voice became low and serious as it slowly drifted through the darkness.
He Xinluo felt her body stiffen. Hearing Li Zimu speak in such a heavy and earnest tone made her cough lightly in an attempt to ease the tension. "Don't worry; nothing will happen. Brother Si Yang will definitely come to save us!" She tried to instill some confidence in herself and Li Zimu, picturing An Siyang's figure in her mind.
"I don't care!" Li Zimu's laughter echoed in the cramped space, seemingly bouncing back at them. "Although I don't want to admit it, if it were Boss An accompanying you here today, you wouldn't be in such danger. Even if you did find yourself in peril, he would fight tooth and nail to keep you alive. But unfortunately for you, I won't! If I love you, I'd rather die with you than let you live alone!" His words were filled with deep affection and determination, striking directly at He Xinluo's heart in the darkness.
He Xinluo's face flushed instantly. Although she couldn't see Li Zimu's expression in the dark, at that moment she understood he was serious! Her heart began to race uncontrollably as a complex emotion spread within her.
"I'm so sorry!" A familiar male voice came from outside the coffin. "The prince's ambition to share life and death with his beloved will have to wait until the next life!" The voice was steady and powerful, carrying a hint of warmth that felt familiar.
"It's Brother Si Yang!" He Xinluo exclaimed joyfully, calling out repeatedly, "Brother Si Yang, we're in the coffin!" Her voice brimmed with surprise and anticipation as if she had grasped a lifeline.
