Xuan Qi wore a facade of feigned cheerfulness. "Brother, just lend me for one day. Didn’t you have your eye on my Seven-Colored Plum Blossom Divine Deer last time? I can lend it to you, no need to return it."
Dusting Whisk continued to fiddle with the egg, while Xuan Qing smiled with a hint of mockery. "Junior Brother, you are truly generous!"
"Indeed, indeed! I, your junior brother, have always been generous. Food, drink, the Immortal Bird beast—whatever Brother desires, just take it!" Xuan Qi nodded vigorously, his heart itching with curiosity as he gazed at the Little Sweetie, which was blissfully nestled with Xuan Qing. He wondered what would hatch from it and longed to take it back for study.
Xuan Qing tapped the egg and said, " Little Sweetie, since Junior Brother has spoken, take whatever you fancy. Don’t be polite; being polite only leads to your own loss."
The egg happily bounced down and began selecting any item that caught its fancy.
A sudden feeling of foreboding washed over Xuan Qi; something felt amiss. His brother was clearly here to flaunt the extraordinary Immortal Egg he had found while taking advantage of him. He regretted his moment of bravado.
"Brother..."
Xuan Qing sat down leisurely and poured himself a cup of wine, asking with great satisfaction, "What’s wrong? Regretting it?"
"Isn’t this egg of yours a bit... too..." Xuan Qi hesitated over his words.
Xuan Qing glanced at the egg that was pushing a pile of items together and pretended to be clueless. "Too... too what?"
"Where there’s a master, there’s an egg." Xuan Qi grimaced; truly, like breeds like. Just look at the treasures in his dark palace: fifty-six jars of Celestial Brew, eight hatching Immortal Eggs, one hundred and eight freshly made elixirs, countless rare treasures and herbs... the list went on endlessly.
Xuan Qi nearly spat out blood. How did this egg know where he hid his treasures? Aside from Immortal Attendant in the palace, only his brother—who was still pretending to be clueless—knew. There was no need to think further; Xuan Qi had already figured out who the mastermind was.
When he saw the egg proudly standing atop the Seven-Colored Plum Blossom Divine Deer’s head as it approached from afar, Xuan Qi took several steps back. "Brother, you... you..." He took a breath and continued, "This is robbery!"
"Junior Brother, you said to take whatever you fancy; there’s no difference between taking more or less."
Xuan Qi clutched his chest in anguish. "Heaven is so unfair! We are both founders of Xuanji sect, yet because of you, everyone knows that Xuanji sect always produces rogue cultivators."
Xuan Qing nodded nonchalantly and poured more wine into his Wine Gourd. Summoning clouds, he placed these items atop them. The egg jumped onto the clouds but accidentally nudged the eight Immortal Eggs, nearly sending them tumbling off. Both Xuan Qi and Xuan Qing were alarmed and rushed to catch them, nearly colliding in their haste.
"My eight precious Immortal Eggs!"
" Little Sweetie, don’t push! If you don’t want the Immortal Eggs, we can trade for something else."
Upon hearing this, the egg paused and looked at the eight trembling Immortal Eggs huddled together in fear. It hopped left and thought for a moment; then hopped right and pondered again. It tried bumping into them before considering that pushing them off would easily break them. After all, it absolutely refused to let Xuan Qing raise them; it would rather trade for something else.
"Brother, I’ll send you twenty jars of Celestial Brew in a few days if you return my eight Immortal Eggs. I don’t want your egg anymore." Xuan Qi pleaded desperately; this egg was simply a tyrant among eggs while the eight Immortal Eggs were pitiful victims being bullied.
Xuan Qing watched as the egg jumped back onto his shoulder with cold sweat on his face and quickly agreed. Xuan Qi hurriedly gathered the poor Immortal Eggs back from the clouds and ordered Immortal Attendant to return them to the nest of the Immortal Bird.
On their way home, the egg joyfully bounced around on top of the fifty-six jars of Celestial Brew while Xuan Qing lamented silently over losing his eight Immortal Eggs. He grabbed his Wine Gourd and took a swig; the aroma of wine filled the air as the egg nuzzled against his lips, its smooth shell brushing against him as it begged for a drink.
Xuan Qing—defeated.
The egg jumped into Xuan Qing's palm, its faint magical energy drawing out the Celestial Brew from the Wine Gourd. Bathed in the abundant Celestial Spirit Energy of the brew, the egg spun happily until the last drop of liquor turned to water. It then shook its body, the damp shell affectionately rubbing against Xuan Qing's face.
Holding such an egg, Xuan Qing gazed skyward in silence, letting out a long sigh, "Why am I so helpless against an egg?"
As the clouds descended to the ground, the egg hurriedly pushed against the wine jar, straining to push it down from the cloud. Occasionally, Xuan Qing would use a Dusting Whisk to lift the jar and prevent it from crashing to the ground. The diligent egg managed to push the jar to the table beneath the Old Sophora Tree before bouncing back up to the cloud, continuing its efforts to transport the Celestial Brew. This allowed it to expend excess energy, and Xuan Qing comfortably sat down, patting the head of the Seven-Colored Plum Blossom Divine Deer, asking, "How old are you?"
"Almost three hundred years old," replied the Seven-Colored Plum Blossom Divine Deer in a delicate voice reminiscent of a woman.
Upon hearing this, the egg paused its work and hopped onto Xuan Qing's lap. It tilted its body and pointed at the Seven-Colored Plum Blossom Divine Deer, swaying left and right as if its meaning was clear. However, Xuan Qing pretended not to understand. He patted the egg and said to the retreating Seven-Colored Plum Blossom Divine Deer, "You can stay here for now; there’s plenty of tender grass and wild fruits in this mountain. Make yourself at home."
The egg protested with a series of jumps upon hearing that Xuan Qing was allowing the Seven-Colored Plum Blossom Divine Deer to stay. Xuan Qing tapped it lightly with his Dusting Whisk, saying, "Protests are ineffective."
The egg turned around and bounced heavily three times in front of the Seven-Colored Plum Blossom Divine Deer to express its dissatisfaction. It then jumped three times in front of Xuan Qing for the same reason before angrily hopping toward the courtyard gate. Seeing that Xuan Qing did not chase after it, it stopped at the gate and jumped heavily three more times.
Since he wouldn’t chase after it, it decided to run away and find a new master—hmph!
Determined to leave, just as it was about to go, it suddenly remembered the fifty-six jars of Celestial Brew; it couldn’t carry them all away. So it turned back and pushed one jar along with it as it attempted to leave home.
After a while, unable to contain itself any longer, the Seven-Colored Plum Blossom Divine Deer asked Xuan Qing, "Aren't you going to chase after it?"
Xuan Qing laughed heartily a few times before replying, "It’s fine to let it go far first; chasing after it later won’t be too late. If I keep indulging its whims now, I’ll have trouble in the future." The egg’s possessiveness was too strong for him to handle; this was just right for tempering its character.
"But..."
The Old Sophora Tree waved its branches to silence the Seven-Colored Plum Blossom Divine Deer. The deer lay down under the tree and ceased speaking.
After some time had passed, Xuan Qing leisurely stood up to chase after the egg.
Only when he could no longer be seen did the Seven-Colored Plum Blossom Divine Deer raise its head and say, "That egg is not an ordinary Immortal Egg; it seems like..."
The branches made a shushing gesture as the Old Sophora Tree instructed the Seven-Colored Plum Blossom Divine Deer to act as if it knew nothing. Xuan Qing had never shown such enthusiasm toward anything before; this rare instance would surely bring him joy for several days.
The Seven-Colored Plum Blossom Divine Deer nodded in agreement.
