Unaware of the presence of another person behind her while she was on the phone, Lin Xue was startled when she turned around and suddenly saw someone standing silently behind her. It was Xu Shen.
She had not expected him to appear at such a moment. It seemed that what she had just been talking about might have been handed to her by him. The surprise was palpable; they had seen each other earlier in the day, and she had anticipated a greeting from him, filled with hope. However, he still did not bring any joy, maintaining his usual haughty demeanor.
Now that he stood behind her, Lin Xue felt a mix of shock and curiosity. She thought it best to greet him, but their conversation didn’t seem particularly friendly. She never imagined he would show up here. Was it possible he had some connection to this workplace? Having worked in this industry for quite some time, she knew it well enough to realize there shouldn’t be any overlap between their fields. It was hard to fathom how he could be here, especially since this event was typically discreet and only known to those within the industry. Who had leaked the information?
How did he know about this gathering and manage to find her? Earlier, while on the phone, she had confirmed that her location was not particularly noticeable. Yet, he had managed to locate her precisely and even handed her something.
Eating habits were something she had maintained for a long time; they were an integral part of her life that couldn’t easily be changed. It seemed he remembered this habit of hers and chose to hand something to her at just the right moment, adding a touch of unexpected surprise.
With that in mind, Lin Xue decided to speak first. “I really didn’t expect to run into you here. Are we fated or just unlucky? How did you know I would be here? Are you also attending some social event, or do you know there are matters to resolve?”
“And what about that thing you just handed me? Where did it come from? How did you know it was something I was looking for?”
Xu Shen replied, “Don’t overthink it. That wasn’t something I prepared for you; I just picked it up from somewhere else. I found it and thought it might be useful since you seemed to be looking for something. But I certainly didn’t expect you to put it straight into your mouth.”
“You should really thank your habit for that,” he continued. “What if one day someone hands you something dangerous and you do the same? Wouldn’t that be risky? You might want to consider changing that habit a bit in the future; otherwise, if it were someone else handing you something harmful, it could end badly.”
“What surprises me is that you've kept this habit for so many years without any change.”
