It was truly a sight to behold; Su Mingxian was so infuriated that she almost laughed. What was this? Playing both sides?
Receiving someone else's gifts while complaining about the giver—she could only imagine how Shen Chi would feel if he heard those words.
Sending food and drink to such a person was less worthwhile than feeding a dog; even dogs had more conscience than them.
She really wanted to send Shen Chi a message saying, "Is this the family you care about?"
Su Mingxian had no intention of wasting her breath on the Ruan family. She had experienced their character in her past life and had only planned to collect the pager number and leave, knowing that after the divorce, there would be no further contact.
Unfortunately, they saw her with her children and clearly had other plans. They intended to turn the tables on her. Su Mingxian was not one to back down easily.
"What's wrong with that? It’s just an entire pig's head," Su Mingxian deliberately chose the cheapest item to mention.
Sure enough, Ruan Jing immediately looked at her with disdain. "So what if it’s an entire pig's head? I'm sick of it! You've clearly never seen the world; you're just a country bumpkin."
After hurling those insults, her eyes sparkled with pride.
Su Mingxian glanced at her coolly. "What’s wrong with us country folk? Have we ever eaten your rice? Even if we haven’t seen much of the world, we know what is right and wrong, and we wouldn’t stoop to your level of filth.
Do you know that my family goes an entire year without tasting meat? My two children are so thin they look like walking skeletons, yet Shen Chi actually sent your family an entire pig's head, and you dare to complain? How is that fair?"
Ruan Jing's thin skin couldn't take it; she was furious. "Who are you calling ignorant of right and wrong? It's just a piece of junk! Who cares about that? It’s not like we asked for it; he insisted on sending it! What does that have to do with us?"
This was certainly stirring up a hornet's nest.
"Fine, you don't care, right? If you don't care, then just pay me back," Su Mingxian had been waiting for her here all along.
Ruan Jing was taken aback. "Pay back? How can I return something that's already in my stomach?"
Wang Fang's eyelids twitched, sensing something was off. She hurried to interject, but Su Mingxian didn't give her a chance.
"Weren't you all saying you didn't care about this little thing? If you look down on it, why did you eat it?"
Ruan Jing awkwardly replied, "…Well, if I didn't eat it, wouldn't that be a waste?"
"Ha, what a good excuse. Since you've eaten it, then just pay me money," Su Mingxian immediately started calculating. "Right now, pork is five yuan a pound. A pig's head weighs at least ten kilograms. The meat from the pig's head is cheaper than fresh pork, so let's say thirty yuan for that. And those cigarettes and liquor—I've heard a pack of Furongwang costs twenty-five yuan, two cartons would be five hundred yuan. And Wuliangye, that's good liquor; one bottle is over three hundred yuan, so two bottles would be over six hundred. All together, that comes to at least a thousand."
At this point, Su Mingxian looked at them coldly. "That’s just for two festivals. There are at least five or six important holidays in a year, plus the birthdays of the elders. Let me do the math… I'll take a little loss and you can just pay me back five thousand; the rest can be considered charity."
"You—"
Ruan Jing was so furious she was practically jumping up and down, glaring at the shabby-looking woman in front of her with two messy braids who seemed to be falling apart at the seams. She never expected her words could be so venomous.
Su Mingxian raised her chin defiantly, looking down on her with contempt and provocation. "Why aren't you saying anything now? Can’t you afford to pay and are trying to renege on your debt?"
Ruan Jing immediately turned pale but tried to sound fierce. "Who can't afford it? Who's trying to renege? I—"
Before she could finish her sentence, her mother slapped her directly across the face. "What do you mean 'what'? Just shut up!"
"Mom?" Ruan Jing looked utterly incredulous.
"Shut your mouth and go back to your room," Wang Fang snapped, furious. This ungrateful girl had no idea how hard it was to make a living.
And that damn woman from the countryside, how could she know the prices of cigarettes and alcohol so well? It seemed she had come prepared. Now, Wang Fang found herself in a tight spot; the Ruan Family had truly embarrassed themselves this time.
