Four people took their tools and worked together to push the boat to the shore, using the waves to skillfully launch the small vessel into the sea. Lin Xiao instructed Lin Qingmo to hold the oil-paper umbrella steady while he, along with Lin Liu and Lin San, began to paddle. Lin Qingmo thought he was worried about the umbrella, fearing it might be accidentally dropped, so she gripped the handle tightly. The boat reached shallow waters not far from the coast. Today, the sea was calm, and Lin San and Lin Liu suggested they venture further into the center of the ocean. Once they arrived at the center, all around them was a vast expanse, with no sight of land, making the small boat appear exceptionally lonely. The water was thick and heavy, like a solid hand that could easily crush the boat if it were squeezed.
Lin Xiao took out two fishing rods and baited them, also pulling out a large net in preparation for catching big fish. Suddenly, he felt a flash before his eyes as someone grabbed him by the neck and pulled him backward. Instinctively, he opened his mouth to bite at the arm around his neck but heard a threatening voice whisper in his ear: "Don't move, or I'll kill you." It was Lin San's voice. Lin Xiao was dragged to one end of the boat, his wrists bound behind his back with fishing line. He anxiously looked up at Lin Qingmo, only to see that Lin Liu had done the same to her, binding her hands behind her back with fishing line. The umbrella had flipped into the sea; its surface faced down while its handle stood upright like a corpse thrown into the water. A shiver ran down Lin Xiao's spine as he struggled desperately against his bonds, but the fishing line only tightened more, digging into his flesh. Lin San pressed down on him and laughed, "Are you feeling sorry for yourself?"
"What do you want?" Lin Xiao asked calmly. A greedy smile crept onto Lin Liu's face across from him. He and Lin San were brothers; both had round faces with thick eyebrows and expressions that could easily mislead one into thinking they were harmless. Yet now those faces bore expressions of greed and malice that suggested something sinister was taking over their bodies.
Lin Liu chuckled darkly and said, "We just want that outfit on Lin Qingmo." He glanced at her with pride and continued, "Do you know what this royal blue robe is made of? — Shark silk. It's woven by merfolk from this sea and is worth a hundred taels of gold. Moreover, this garment is exquisitely crafted; it's practically seamless and worth its weight in gold." Lin San chimed in: "Ask him if there are any more at home." Understanding his brother's intent, Lin Liu tightened the fishing line further until blood began to seep from Lin Qingmo's wrist. She winced in pain and shook her head weakly: "No... there’s nothing else." Strangely enough, the two garments Ao Yan had given her would grow with her; they would always fit perfectly.
Suddenly, Lin San said sternly: "I remember there’s a green one too; he doesn’t wear it often but I’ve seen it two or three times. I’m sure it’s also shark silk." "No! No!" Lin Qingmo shook her head vigorously in denial. In response, Lin Liu slapped her hard across the face; his strong palm nearly sent her tumbling overboard.
Lin Xiao shouted angrily: "Lin Liu! Damn you! If you have guts, come at me instead! You want money? My family has it!" Lin San scoffed dismissively and stood up straight with his hands on his hips: "What your family has is nothing worth mentioning. That outfit on this kid is worth more than what we could spend in a lifetime." He turned to Lin Liu and added: "If he doesn’t talk, we’ll just toss him into the sea to feed the fish. We’ll strip him of this outfit and leave without ever returning to this village; even if they find out we harmed them later on, we’ll be long gone enjoying our lives."
Lin Qingmo shook her head desperately: "No! Really! There’s only this one! I didn’t even know it was shark silk! If I had known, I would have sold it myself! I found it by the sea!" As Lin Liu and Lin San realized they weren’t getting anywhere with their questioning for now, they decided not to waste any more time probing for truth; they just wanted to strip her of her clothing and leave quickly—of course, first ensuring that both she and Lin Xiao were dealt with.
Lin Liu moved to remove Lin Qingmo's clothing. Seeing that Lin San was about to push Lin Xiao overboard, she shouted urgently: "Take my clothes! Just let Lin Xiao go! Push me instead!" With a sneer, Lin San replied: "Oh? You’re quite affectionate! How could I bear to separate you two? But I can bear it—so can heaven! Hahaha!" He laughed like a bandit as his hefty body shook with mirth.
Lin Xiao turned his serious face toward Lin Qingmo's eyes and said: "Qingmo, I’m willing to die with you."
"Did you hear that? He wants to go with his 'little wife'!" Lin San exclaimed before loosening his grip; as he tipped backward toward the sea, it seemed inevitable that he would fall in.
Lin Qingmo struggled fiercely despite her swollen cheeks; she opened her mouth wide to shout: "Lin Xiao..."
Suddenly, ripples began to form on the smooth surface of the sea; gradually they grew larger until they rocked the boat violently. Lin San lost his balance and fell onto the deck. The sudden motion caused Lin Xiao to be thrown back as well; he hit his head against the side of the boat with a painful thud that nearly brought tears to his eyes.
Lin San and Lin Liu’s faces turned pale as panic set in; hastily stuffing their prize into their clothes, Lin Liu said: "Third Brother! I checked before we came out—there shouldn’t be any storms today!"
"Stop talking nonsense! Let’s get back first!" They were now fighting for their own survival and no longer cared about what happened to either Lin Qingmo or Lin Xiao.
Both brothers were experienced at sea; they steadied themselves against the rocking boat while battling against rising waves. The surging water lifted their small vessel high before crashing it down again—each rise and fall was heart-stopping—as if a giant tongue were rolling them over repeatedly.
Inside the boat, amidst all this chaos, Lin Xiao found himself tossed around helplessly with both hands bound tightly by fishing line. Seizing an opportunity during a particularly wild wave, he rolled over next to Lin Qingmo and bit onto her inner garment while mumbling incoherently: "Hold... hold on."
Lin Qingmo gasped for breath; one side of her face swelled up like she had a fruit stuffed inside her mouth. She tried to speak but couldn’t manage more than a few words as she struggled against pain while shaking her head in refusal for him not to speak.
Suddenly something burst from beneath the surface of the water with a loud splash that sent waves crashing down upon them like rain. Both Lin Xiao and Lin Qingmo instinctively recoiled as they closed their eyes but heard someone call out from above: “Xiao Yan! Teach them a lesson!”
All four turned their gaze upward towards what appeared above—a towering wave where a mermaid emerged with a human upper body but fish tail below; she had long fiery red hair standing high atop her head like an angry crown while extending her arms wide as her tail curled upwards.
On her back sat two figures—a child around ten years old dressed in golden patterned robes with large yellow eyes that were cold without warmth—and behind him sat an older boy wearing deep purple robes adorned with dark patterns who had pointed furry ears atop his head along with sly fox-like eyes filled with mischief.
“Xiao Yan!” he commanded again as he pointed towards them.
Ao Yan tightened his lips as he rode down from atop the wave directly towards their small boat's bottom; diving beneath only to suddenly emerge from its other side creating an enormous wave that lifted their vessel high before sending it tumbling sideways—strangely enough none of them fell overboard.
Lin San and Lin Liu were left stunned while panic set in for both brothers; however, amidst all this chaos, some clarity remained within Lin Xiao who held onto hope despite being tossed about wildly—he bit down harder onto Lin Qingmo’s inner garment even as turbulence tore it apart leaving a gaping hole behind.
Poor Lin Qingmo collided against the side of the boat before losing consciousness entirely.
With a calm expression on his face, Ao Yan suddenly stood upright on top of the mermaid's back while billowing robes fluttered around him elegantly. He leaped into mid-air whereupon an intense golden light flashed revealing a small golden dragon emerging amidst dazzling rays—its golden scales glimmering brilliantly under sunlight while tiny horns sprouted atop its head like tender buds.
Both brothers were left dumbfounded by fear yet somehow snapped back into reality as they clung together crying uncontrollably while begging for mercy: “Dragon God above! We bow before you!”
Before they could finish speaking however Ao Yan flicked his dragon tail sending blinding light flashing through which split their small boat cleanly in half—leaving both brothers stranded on one half while poor Lin Qingmo remained alone on another.
“Qingmo! Qingmo!” cried out Lin Xiao desperately as he lay flat against what remained of their vessel looking up at her helplessly—today’s events had truly opened his eyes; legends were indeed real—and having witnessed such wonders made him feel fulfilled despite everything else happening around him.
But this overwhelming sensation quickly faded away replaced by concern for what mattered most within—the treasures hidden deep inside his heart.
Ao Yan swung his dragon tail once more charging towards where both brothers clung desperately upon their half-boat—while terrified cries erupted from them both who buried their heads low against deckboards sobbing uncontrollably until Ao Yan lunged forward aiming directly at them but instead struck outwards towards where Lin Xiao lay causing him to be flung off overboard just before plunging into depths below—but miraculously caught mid-air by Ao Yan’s tail once again lifting him high above like some sort of plaything tossed repeatedly until finally collapsing under pressure causing blood to spew forth from within him leaving him gasping desperately for air.
“Well done little flame!” cheered Fox King Liu Lan who sat atop mermaid’s back clapping gleefully before suddenly grinning mischievously as he kicked downwards aiming towards both brothers yet retracting last moment transforming hands into claws ripping flesh off each cheek causing howls of agony erupting simultaneously from both men who now found themselves hurled off into ocean depths below without mercy whatsoever!
In mid-air Ao Yan exhaled forcefully creating gusts strong enough that half-boat caught falling figure of poor injured yet still breathing form belonging solely unto young master named ‘Lin Xiao’—while both brothers found themselves propelled forward landing hard against remaining pieces left behind struggling futilely against currents pushing them towards shore!
