Seeing her like this, Gu Nanfeng's voice unconsciously softened, carrying a hint of a smile. "Are you scared? You were afraid of getting your teeth pulled when you were little." This question seemed to open the floodgates of Jiang Li's emotions, and tears instantly welled up in her eyes. But then she thought that if she cried like this, he would surely misunderstand and think she was scared of the tooth extraction. So, she quickly raised her hand to wipe her tears and explained, "I'm not scared; just fix my teeth."
Immediately after, Gu Nanfeng asked a question that made Jiang Li feel both embarrassed and awkward. "Did you get your period today?"
"No," Jiang Li replied, her face flushed. She couldn't understand how getting a filling had anything to do with her menstrual cycle.
After asking, Gu Nanfeng put on rubber gloves and sat down beside Jiang Li. The overhead dental light turned on as he brought over the small dental drill. "Open your mouth," he instructed. Perhaps worried that she might cry again, he added, "If you're scared, just look at my face."
It was then that Jiang Li noticed he wasn't wearing a mask today; his handsome face was right in front of her. She had to admit that his good looks had a magical effect—not only did they distract her from the situation, but they also gave her courage. Despite the buzzing of the drill in her mouth, she found it wasn't terrifying at all.
After a while, Gu Nanfeng paused the drill to rinse with a small water spray and signaled for Jiang Li to spit it out. Then it was back to drilling and rinsing; root canal treatment was a lengthy process, but he was meticulous and patient. For Jiang Li, who secretly admired him, this moment felt like the sweetest time.
Just as the treatment was nearing its end, the glass door of the clinic was suddenly pushed open. A woman walked in, and Jiang Li immediately caught a whiff of her perfume. Instinctively, she sensed that this woman was not ordinary. Sure enough, the next moment she heard the woman sweetly call out, "Chaoyang."
Upon hearing the voice, Gu Nanfeng stopped the drill. Jiang Li sat up to rinse her mouth and finally got a good look at the woman. Tall and beautiful, she had the classic goddess-like appearance; standing next to Gu Nanfeng, they looked like a match made in heaven.
At this thought, Jiang Li felt a sharp pain in her heart as if it had been pricked by needles. The numbness and soreness in her mouth hadn't faded yet; she ran her tongue over the cold teeth that had just been treated and forced out a faint smile as she said, "Doctor Gu, I’ll be leaving now."
Gu Nanfeng called out to her, reminding her, "Come back next Wednesday." Jiang Li softly acknowledged with an "mm," then turned to leave. In the distance, she vaguely heard the woman ask, "Who is she?" Her steps faltered slightly as she heard Gu Nanfeng respond, "Just our neighbor's little sister."
Though his voice was soft, it detonated like a bomb in Jiang Li's heart. She felt her eyes grow dry and stinging as if sand had blown into them. Jiang Li quickened her pace and almost fled from the waiting room. At that moment, she desperately wanted to turn back and shout at Gu Nanfeng that she hadn’t been his neighbor for five years! But ultimately, she held back and hurried away until she disappeared at the end of the corridor.
In her senior year of high school, Jiang Li's parents had asked if she wanted to move closer to school. At first, she firmly refused to move. However, on the day she delivered a love letter to Gu Nanfeng, her attitude took a complete 180-degree turn; she suddenly agreed to move. From that day on, she resolved not to see him again. She thought that if it weren't for needing dental work, perhaps she'd never appear in his sight again for the rest of her life. Now that their reunion stemmed from dental issues, she decided not to return; after all, her teeth no longer hurt or swelled.
Having made this decision, Jiang Li slowly stood up and took a deep breath as if trying to cast aside all memories of the past.
