As the weather gradually warmed up, Jiang Li relied on Gu Nanfeng to treat half of her dental issues, managing to get through most of the summer. During this time, Gu Nanfeng repeatedly urged her to go to the hospital for further treatment, but she always found various excuses to brush him off. Sometimes, she couldn't help but wonder if she kept avoiding it, would a responsible doctor like Gu Nanfeng persistently seek her out? The thought brought a sweet sensation to her heart, as if an invisible bond was tying her and him together.
One day, while sitting on the mat eating watermelon, Jiang Li inadvertently brushed her tongue against the decayed tooth. After undergoing root canal treatment, there was a large cavity in her tooth; every time she touched that hollow space, she couldn't help but recall the sensation of Gu Nanfeng's cool fingertips against it. She took a few more bites of watermelon, but unexpectedly, the tooth that had been pain-free for so long suddenly started hurting again. The pain was all too familiar, and Jiang Li cursed her bad luck as she quickly tossed aside the watermelon and rushed to the bathroom to brush her teeth. However, nothing seemed to help. The sharp pain intensified, even sending jolts through her nerves, leaving her in agony.
This was truly self-inflicted! Yet this time, Jiang Li silently vowed that no matter how painful it got, she would absolutely not seek out Gu Nanfeng.
The next day, upon waking up, Jiang Li discovered that her cheek was swollen like a steamed bun. To avoid alarming mother Jiang, she buried herself under the covers, pretending to still be asleep. By afternoon, her face had swollen even more; it felt as if she had a burning coal in her mouth—every movement sent sharp pangs of pain through her—and she had developed a high fever.
There was only one hospital in S City. Covering her swollen face with her hands, Jiang Li stood at the registration desk and mumbled indistinctly, "I don't want to register for Gu Nanfeng." However, due to her unclear speech, the nurse mistakenly thought she wanted an appointment with Gu Nanfeng. After all, Doctor Gu was famous for his good looks in the hospital; it was only natural for a young girl to have a crush on such a handsome guy.
It wasn't until she reached the consultation room that Jiang Li realized she had registered for the wrong appointment. Just as she was about to turn back and change it, Gu Nanfeng appeared out of nowhere and called out to her.
Wearing rubber gloves, Gu Nanfeng carefully examined Jiang Li's mouth. She couldn't help but feel that fate had played a cruel joke on them! Furrowing his brows, he asked, "What happened to you?" Embarrassed to admit it was due to eating watermelon, Jiang Li could only lower her head in silence.
Gu Nanfeng sighed helplessly. "You really..." He trailed off without finishing his sentence and handed Jiang Li a prescription. "Go get some medication and head to the infusion room; just taking medicine isn't enough anymore." As he left, he still seemed worried—perhaps afraid that Jiang Li would sneak away again—so he insisted on having a nurse escort her to the infusion room.
On the way to the infusion room, Jiang Li encountered that stunning beauty from before. Instinctively turning her head away, she felt that her current disheveled and unattractive appearance was not suitable for facing a rival. However, the little nurse beside her clearly didn't want to miss this juicy gossip opportunity and chattered away along the way. Reluctantly listening in, Jiang Li learned that this beauty was named Liu Menglin; she was the daughter of the hospital director and also a surgeon who happened to be an alumnus of Gu Nanfeng's university. According to the little nurse's words, they were like two pieces of a puzzle destined to be together sooner or later.
