Jiang Li lay on the infusion chair, watching the IV drip slowly fall, her heart filled with melancholy. Suddenly, a heavy rain began to pour outside. Jiang Li felt her head growing heavy and, leaning against the back of the chair, she unknowingly drifted off to sleep. In her dreams, she found herself transported back to a long-ago day, also marked by torrential rain. She and Gu Nanfeng had forgotten their umbrellas and ended up sitting in the McDonald's next to their school for a full two hours. At that time, Gu Nanfeng patiently helped her solve the math problems that troubled her most. She was only in the second year of junior high, while he was already in his third year of high school.
When Jiang Li awoke, it was completely dark outside, but the rain continued to pour down. There was only a little bit left in the IV bag, and Jiang Li felt a tingling numbness in her feet. She wanted to stand up and stretch but discovered that a man's coat had somehow been draped over her. Looking up, she saw Gu Nanfeng slowly walking toward her from the end of the corridor. Behind him loomed the stormy night, but his handsome figure made everything else fade into insignificance.
Jiang Li gently flexed her numb feet but dared not stand up. Gu Nanfeng stopped in front of her, gazing silently at her. Feeling a bit guilty, Jiang Li asked, "Aren't you off work yet?" Gu Nanfeng replied softly with an "Mm," sitting down on the chair beside her. "I still have one more patient," he said. Jiang Li chuckled awkwardly, trying to ease the tension. "How could you leave your patient in the clinic to come here? Aren't you afraid they'll complain?"
Gu Nanfeng didn't respond; instead, he continued to fix his deep, dark eyes on Jiang Li. Under his intense gaze, she felt flustered and couldn't bring herself to speak or meet his eyes. She lowered her head, letting the tingling sensation in her feet crawl like ants across her skin. At that moment, she just wished Gu Nanfeng would leave quickly so she could get up and move around.
Seemingly reading her thoughts, Gu Nanfeng placed a plastic bag on the chair and stood up, heading toward the dental office. Seeing this, Jiang Li hurriedly got up but accidentally let the coat slip to the floor. It was then that she recognized it as Gu Nanfeng's coat from earlier. Did that mean he had come by while she was asleep?
Opening the plastic bag left by Gu Nanfeng, she discovered it contained takeout food. She was already so hungry that she devoured it ravenously. After finishing, she realized there were two portions inside. Did he plan to eat with her? The thought made Jiang Li feel a bit disappointed; surely he had rushed back because of her comment about patient complaints. Being a doctor was truly not easy!
Gu Nanfeng had prescribed two days' worth of IV treatment for Jiang Li. After the first day’s session, she felt much better; by the second day, that troublesome tooth had finally stopped hurting completely. As she packed her bag and prepared to leave the hospital, her phone screen suddenly lit up with a video call request from Gu Nanfeng. Panic surged through her; her first instinct was to pretend she hadn’t heard it. But before she could react further, Gu Nanfeng had crossed the long corridor and appeared before her.
Jiang Li couldn’t understand how he always seemed to see through her little thoughts so easily. Gu Nanfeng's expression was not good as he questioned her sharply, "Why didn’t you answer? Planning to sneak away?" Nervously swallowing hard, Jiang Li stammered an explanation: "My... my hand hurts; I was just about to answer..." Gu Nanfeng snorted dismissively and said firmly, "Come with me to the dental office." With no choice left, Jiang Li obediently followed him.
